Question MAC Formal Black Holiday Eye Brush Set
Firstly, let me give a little information about me and my makeup skills. I just recently starting wearing eye shadow... I used to only wear a pressed powder on my face and a lipglass. This holiday season I decided that I wanted to improve my makeup skills and I purchased the basic brush set and the eye brush set because they seem like a pretty good bargain. My problem is this, I don't know what brush should be used for what. I purchased the prep&prime eye and the MA that sold it to me told me I should use the 252 brush with it. I'm also confused because it looks like the 266 and 212 would be used for the same thing. Same thing with the 252 and 239. It seems like a bunch of duplicates. I don't know what brush is for what. Help Me!!!!

Thanks,
Leana

Eye Brush Set
209: Eyeliner brush
212: Flat definer Brush
217: Blending Brush
252: Large Shader Brush
275: Medium Angled Shading Brush

Basic Brush Set
129: Powder/Blush Brush
219: Pencil Brush
239: Eye Shading Brush
266: Small Angle Brush
316: Lip Brush/Covered Brush

first off, a good resource for brushes and what to use them for can be found on make up addict: http://www.makeupaddict.org/brushes.html

in your sets, the only real duplicate is the 212 and the 266 - both are eyeliner-type brushes used for lining with shadow or fluidlines. however, you'll probably end up preferring one over the other... it's great you have both to decide which you prefer. you've also got a pencil type eyeliner (209) so you get to play with all of them! remember also that a different brush, same product can create a different look... or it may not like the feel of certain brushes.

Eye Brush set:
212: Flat definer Brush - eye liner.
252: Large Shader Brush - this brush has stiffer hairs, better for primer and paints, or creamy products.

Basic Brush Set
239: Eye Shading Brush - dense brush for applying eyeshadow
266: Small Angle Brush - eyeliner. this or the 212 - people can prefer one or the other.

First of all, I wanna say thanks for your help. Would you say that the 252 is the appropriate brush to use for the prep and prime eye?

Thanks again

i don't use prep and prime, but i do use a paint as a base (thanks to many spectrettes who got me onto this idea). I use the 242 brush, which is kind of similar to the 252 but smaller. i don't own a 252 so i can't do a proper comparison.

if prep and prime eye is a liquidy type of product then the 252 would seem to be suitable according to makeupaddict. test it out and see how you go

there's no hard and fast rule about which brush to use and which brush is best - different brushes work better for different people. i say use it for whatever you want.
