MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
Hey ladies! I was just curious if any of you ever had anyone talk about you behind your back b/c of a look you're wearing or if you are ever uncomfortable wearing a certain look?
When Naughty Nauticals first came out, I was having my makeup done at the MAC store and the MA helping me was really great. She kept looking out the window behind me, though. She would look out and sometimes make a weird face. Finally she told me that people had been looking in and staring all day. She and all the other MA's were wearing the NN look like the model on the poster and I thought they all looked great. She said, "What, do they think a black girl isn't supposed to wear blue eyeshadow?"
I told her I thought she looked amazing and she told me that I wouldn't believe how many customers would come in and look at the m/up displays and then talk about the MA's behind their back about what m/up they had on, then turn around and ask to have their m/up done!! That is just SO wrong!
I told her that one of my major reasons for going to MAC IS the fact that they are willing to step out of the box and try something on you that you normally might not try or b/c they are all SO enthusiastic about trying something crazy or different. I told her the ONLY time I ever had an "Oh my God, look at what she is wearing" reaction was when I saw one of them wearing something fabulous and I wished I could pull it off. She thanked me for my positive comments and several of the other MA's said they were really uncomfortable with the NN e/s and Port Red lips. I just wondered if any of you ladies ever had any of those issues.
Thanks for all you do!!!

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
we get alot of looks when we do theme days that require masks. i love doing masks! customers will stare at us and ask "what's with makeup?" then we gotta explain the whole thing, blah, blah, blah. it gets really annoying! they actually think we wear them on a normal daily basis.

OMG yes. And all day you hear, "I don't want it like yours" or "Please don't make me look like her". Or you all take turns wearing a big pair of sunglasses for your lunch breaks.

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
I'm not a makeup artist, but when the Fafi collection came out my friend and I went to go check it out and bought a bunch of stuff. I went a few days after it came out, so I guess I missed the theme day, but after MAC we went to this chocolate store across the street. The guy at the counter looked at our Fafi bags and was like, "WHERE IS THAT BAG FROM?" And we said it was from the MAC store across the street. He goes on to explain that a few days previously, a bunch of girls came in "that looked exactly like the girl on that bag" and he couldn't figure out where they came from. It made me laugh =)

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
Wow...who would think that people would be so...dumb. LoL
All the customers at my MAC store are like, friends with the MA's. They are all around the same age and I've never seen anyone act like that (I'm sure its happened though)..
I think every single one of the MA's look amazing when i go in there. Well, one guy doesnt really wear makeup its kinda weird I dunno. But everyone else looks awesome. the next time I go in I want him to something extreme and dark and crazy on my eyes!
The only thing I can imagine myself not liking is bright or red or dark lips. Because I just dont wear them. but the MA's know that

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
to each is own but i do hate when i'm in MAC and i overhear customers ask/tell MA's 'is it gonna be like yours?' or 'i don't want it as crazy as yours.' if you go in MAC, you must trust them to steer you in the right direction, right?
i've had MA's say to me, 'i'm going to do neutrals on you' or ask me 'would i mind color?'. i always say hell yeah-i look good in anything do whatever your heart desires-well with the exception of red lips and noticeable lip liner. i have big lips and those accents make me look like i'm giving bj's in the parking lot. lol!

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
Dislike it not the word i would use - HATE is more like it. As an NC45/50, it is rare that a look suits my coloring. (and before anyone says my MRO's favorite line - 'ohh you can adjust the look to fit your coloring' - that's a hot lie - since i would no longer be wearing 'the look' if i did that).
Having to listen to customers all day saying that they don't like your makeup and don't want u to do their makeup - is fun. They all want the one girl who didn't wear any of the 'required' looks to do their makeup cause all the rest of us look like 'clowns'. It does't matter if i point to poster and explain that we are copying that - all i get to hear is how no one wants their appointment with you and yes they will say that kinda thing to your face.

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
Not so much whether I like my required make-up or not (there's not much I can do about it so it's not worth stressing over), I still get chapped about people dissing our features.
People tend to forget there's a person behind the fierce make-up and can get really personal about your appearance. Most of the time it's aspirational ("I really love your eyeliner, I wish I could do my make-up like yours!" etc) but sometimes people can be incredibly brutal about your looks. Aaaaaaaaaall the time. I can't tell you how many times I've been described by customers as 'the fat girl with glasses and pink eyeshadow.'
"Can you do a smokey eye on me? Not like yours though, you look a little slutty and cheap." - one of my favourite lines as delivered to a co-worker of mine. Six months on and I think she's still smarting over that one.

Oh, uh uh. At that point I'd have to tell her to find another slut in another store to do her makeup. That is just beyond RUDE. Tell your co-worker to let that one go. The girl probably doesn't know what wearing real makeup is all about!

So DO you have to wear the "required" look or can you wear whatever you want?

First of all, you are a serious hottie, so fuck those arsewipes. Ohhh, reading that pissed me off. People are such assholes sometimes. Yeah, I have had customers say things that made me cringe, as well. I wonder, are they ingnorant to what they are saying or are they getting a little power trip off of it?
As far as wearing looks, I never did mind them, but the masks were always a bit much. Nothing like remembering you forgot to put gas in the car the night before as you are driving to work in your mask. Gotta love fuelin' up with a mask on. I looked like I was going to commit a glamourous, glittery hold-up at the gas station.

That is awful....that is just awful. I wouldnt necessarily go to a MA just because what they look like...honestly I dont care who helps me...I might know that one person doesnt do my lips the way I like, but they still know their stuff...The only reason I'm particular about my ma is because he's a sweetheart not because our skin is close to the same color. people are ridiculous..I'm sorry you go through that.

Wow. People have balls! You're gorgeous girl...I can't imagine dissing an MA. I think its just insecurity. A lot of people are intimidated when they go into MAC...and I've gotten more comfortable but its just my insecurity and somewhat low self esteem that makes me feel beneath the MA's. but I'd never ever be rude to someone like that

When MAs go to update and get their update books, some of the collections have a mask look (these aren't released to the public). It isn't a regular occurance. They do them every once in a while. That last ones I remember seeing my fave MAs doing was Madame B. They painted butterflies on their faces. Big butterflies that went across their faces. I am sure there have been more since then, I just didn't see them.

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
I honestly don't care what someone else says... I have always gotten positive responses to whatever I happen to do even if it is a partial mask with Electric Eel!
If a corporate look doesn't work for my skintone I tweak it until it does...that is the whole point of the facecharts, to give you ideas, not to dictate that you HAVE to wear this color with the other in the crease... My motto is have fun, look f'in fabulous, and own whatever you are doing even if you may not love it!

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
Yeah, I dislike our themes sometimes. I wear them and just don't look in the mirror. I despise colorful and dark lips. But I wear them, I just complain alot when I do, ahaha. I like NUUUUUDEEE lips.
And you girls, you have nooo idea about staring. I get stared at constantly. I'm a 6'1 thinman in a full face of makeup, working in a Connecticut Macy's. I get stares every 2 minutes! Haha. We all just stare back if anyone makes a big deal about our counter.

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
I have to be very honest, I loooove my job like no other, but some looks are just a little too much for me, as a makeup artist, i rarely ever have to wear alot of makeup when i go to my freelance jobs, little if any, enough to look professional and put together. I do realize that working for mac requires its artists to inspire customers with our individuality and sense of color direction. Show our techniques on ourselves is a great sales tool after all. At my locationits like a line from coyote ugly, we all play our little parts, im the playmate, i like the very sexy, VS angel look, highlight, contour and such, and im not too big on blues, or any brights on the lips, it doesnt mean i wont wear them, but when i do people noitice. I make sure if i do wear my same look eveyday, which i like doing, that it is executed beautifully, professional. We have other girls at the counters like our smokey eyed girl, our magenta lipped maven, our blues lady and so on, i tihnk its nice for a customer to step into our store and see so many different looks and colors than to just lable us mac the "too much makeup blue eyeshadow cosmetics line".

Oh, I agree. I think it's important to have variety at a counter because MAC has such a broad customer base. Even the collections have a range of looks, from super dramatic to neutral, so everyone can find something they feel comfortable with. I like it when we can choose from the looks suggested. MOST of the time people want something they can use everyday, whether that be a smoky brown or charcoal look, an office appropriate neutral look, or even something with bright colors. At our counter, more often than not, the customers want something street ready and not editorial-except for Mardi Gras or Halloween.
The looks are usually beautifully done but the average consumer is not going to wear it, at least in my area...lol! And it's not that I think that MAs should not wear bright, dramatic looks or just look average..I just think having everyone look identical takes away from one of MAC's beliefs...being yourself!

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
I work at Clinique (7 days until I quit-woot!) and none of us wear Clinique (boring)
We're the rebel counter that wears MAC and Makeup Forever.
Oddly enough, people always want us to do their faces like ours, even when they are crazy colors.
Clinique customers are pretty vanilla as far as their makeup goes but I think they get inspired to try new things when they see our dramatic faces.
*We usually tell them that the color is discontinued or a mix of different colors but we'll try to do something similar*

That's kinda funny b/c the girl that helped me at MAC told me that Clinique employees usually come in to MAC to have their makeup done and check out all the colors. I told her (no offense!) that I don't go to Clinique anymore except for my foundation (it doesn't break my skin out) b/c MAC is more willing to do brighter, more fun color combos!!

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
I think being rude with a make-up artist is just lack of education + ingorance. I mean, why do people in general always gotta be rude no matter what job are you doing? Cant you just enjoy the fact you gonna have your make-up done by a pro artist? Whoever is in front of you, make-up artist, repectionist, consultant etc - this is rude to tell people they look cheap/slutty etc.
My fav ma told me people are wierd aswell, no one wants vivid bright colours much, they even get bored of making a "natural" face. As for me, i never mind it, simply because i wont be able to do anything like that myself, plus, experimenting is fun! She did me some hot (slutty?) smoky-eyes, and then the other day naughty nauticals promo look. People in the subway were staring at me sometimes, but thats ok.
I feel ashamed for all that people and what the do to MA's. We appreciate your job so much, and rude people you can meet at any job. Sorry ladies!

OMG, do these customers live in windowless rooms with no social contact? How do you stop yourself from stabbing them with a mascara wand?

Re: MA's... do you ever dislike a look you have to wear?
I'm glad this question was asked. I went to the MAC counter because of my love of color and ability to have intensity and recently waited to speak to an MA because I liked her makeup. I photograph rock bands in my "second life" and like the edgeier (dang think that was not spelled correctly!) looks. I love what she did for me and seriously if I had gone and chosen my colors, I would have never picked plum dressing! It's now one of my favorites. Did my makeup look like hers when I was done? No, but it was her style that I liked.. It's like going to get your hair but and bringing in a photo with you. Sure I want that cut like Victoria Beckham but I'm not her so it's not going to look the same.

Of course we can refuse service if there's a valid reason to*, but sometimes you just gotta swallow your pride and make the sale. If I refused service to every rude person that I encountered, I'd be lucky to bring in a thousand dollars a day. Bringing in the money is more important than my (temporarily) hurt feelings.
* I refuse service if I consider it a risk to my health or the health of other customers and coworkers (open sores, weeping acne, etc), or if the person has seriously ripe body odour.
