How do you decide, what makeup to wear?
Every day I look at my stuff and don't know, what to wear. There are sooo many colors I like and so many things I don't want to neglect. I have too much makeup and it starts to burden me I can't go with the color of the clothes I wear, cause most times I wear black!
Anyone else having this problem?

but black goes with EVERYTHING!!! why do u have such a problem matching. I have the same problem picking out my makeup too actually... mostly because of the storage and I dont really know all I have. I end up using the same colors over and over and I do neglect a lot. I look throught he FOTDs here and see what people use and remember colors I have that they used and then try to use them the next day. Not the same, just colors that I remember I have and stuff.

Oh, there's no problem with matching. I only can't decide I have about 250 e/s now, so it's so overwhelming every morning!

I also wear black all the time (at least black shirts every day), so picking makeup can be a bit of a challenge with all the stuff I have. I've sort of set up this system where I start with whatever the first product that comes to my mind that I'd like to wear is(something I neglect or something I love), usually an eyeshadow or Pigment (today it was Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow). From there, I just start grabbing things that I know look good with it (a bunch of purples today). Once I have a bunch of other shadows, I systematically pick the two or three that I like the best (Violet and Grape Pigment), and then pick an eyeliner (Macroviolet) and brow highlight (Pollen). Once I've done my eye makeup and foundation, I sort of "see" what blush (Breath of Plum and Good as Gold Pearlizer) and lipstick (just some Instant Gold Lustreglass) would go well with it, sort of like a psychic intuition (it's hard to explain, but when I get in the makeup zone, suddenly the right combo comes to me), and then do that. That's probably not helpful, but that's what I do.

Oh man, if I wore black everyday I'd have a field day with my makeup. I have an issue with always feeling too done up. So if I have clothes with color in them I can't wear too much makeup, much less match my makeup (that is a total no-no to me!). But if I have black or dark brown or white on I feel like I can go crazy with my makeup. Kinda like the strong eye and lip thing. I usually can only have one or the other, not both.
My problem is that I only wear makeup a couple times a week. I need to start wearing it everyday or else it'll all go bad!

I feel the exact same way. I can't do a strong eye and lip. I have to pick just one and it is usually the eyes.
I don't put on m/u everyday I worry that I am not using most of the items I have. Odd but I have been thinking about buying more black shirts so I can wear whatever makeup I like!

As for picking out the makeup I typically go by my mood or a look I'd like try. Today for instance I have on only foundation because I am not really going out but am seeing another human being.
If I wanted to put on eye makeup it would probably be something a bit more fun. I love to play with colors!! I tend to go a lot off of how I feel that day. Often times I look through my "makeup inspiration folders" I have one on my computer and one with pics from various places that sits with all my makeup. The one on my computer is a word doc where when I see a look I like I will type it up and save it. This way when I go back I can do the the look how I like but use the colors.
I am starting to keep track of color combos I like in a notebook.
I also try to look and what I have used to make sure I don't use it again since I have so much stuff.
It's almost like keeping inventory!
I don't worry to much about not using any powder products up fast but other things like all the MAC fluidline I have I worry about them drying up.
I also "play" with my makeup when I get bored and I come up with other color combos. If I know I will be doing a full face I will usually sit down the night before and plan out my makeup. This also helps me keep track of all my goodies.

this is going to sound really stupid, but i usually plan my outfit around my makeup haha.

my usual dress is a black top and jeans though, so that mostly works with anything i might want to do with my makeup.

Many times it depends on what I'm wearing. I work in a conservative office (OK, I really mean nerdy), so I don't always get to wear the colors I really want to (I wear alot of black, grey & brown clothes w/turquoise, teal, aqua stripes or accents) , so I mostlly wear Nudes & browns.

Hm... I've never thought about this before. I always like to play up my eyes though and do a nude-type lip. I have to wear black and white every dayto work, so I generally try to think of what I did the day before and then come up with a new combination of colors. That can be hard work though! Sometimes the night before I'll play with different ideas on my wrist That way I don't have to think too hard about it in the morning LOL

I just go with my mood. I don't have a ton of makeup, so I usually don't have much trouble deciding what to wear. ;-) And I keep my shadows, blushes, & lipsticks/glosses categorized by color family. Easiest to do with shadows because a majority of them are in palettes. If I'm in the mood for a golden look or whatever, I just go through what I have to get that look & pick whatever specific products strike me at the time. I tend to remember my favorites looks too & sometimes just go with those if I'm running behind schedule.

I guess at this point I don't have a ton of makeup, but usually during the week when I'm in school all day I use natural colors for my makeup if I want to try something different I usually do that on the weekends. Sometimes I do my makeup first and match my clothes later, cause I've been dying to try something new with my makeup.

Usually, I plan my makeup around my outfit for the day. Both of which are planned out while I am drifting off to sleep..haha. It is so funny because I lie there with my eyes closed and I visualize the outfit and how it will look with whatever shoes and usually,
an eye combo will just materialize.

Or sometimes, I just see a color that I want to work with and a cool combo idea pops in my head so I plan the outfit around that.

Since you wear mostly black, your possibilities are almost endless.

I used to be like this...existentialist nausea caused by the endless possibility of choices!

Anyway, it seems a lot easier to decide what to wear when I realise just how many products go untouched, and how long some of them are untouched for. I separate my collection and put away all the things I know I only wear in other seasons, so now it's summer and I put away a whole bunch of 'winter' stuff.

This helps narrow down choices a bit.

I've also set aside a collection of 'special occasion' things, one of which I pulled out today (Infamous paint!).

I try to break it down by function & lighting too.

Am I going to be indoors/outdoors?
Is the natural light outdoors bright/gloomy?
Occasion? Special/work/just at home/neat casual etc.

Listing what you use each day also helps product rotation. It might sound weird, but I love compiling lists of things like that!

Hope these suggestions help. The post above me has some short-but-good ones too!

I usually base my makeup off of my mood, or accessories. If you're wearing all black, that doesn't necassarily mean that you have to wear black makeup. Try picking out a cute purse, or necklace with vibrant colors that you could match your makeup to. For example, a simple black dress accompanied by a turquoise necklace, or other accessories, is a perfect occasion to use your brighter blue eyeshadows, or your favorite glitter liner.

Sounds silly, but I rarely worry about how my make up and clothes work together. So I may wear purples (m/u) and green or blue clothing. But to make sure I use up the m/u I own, I try to plan it out. I keep 2 empty 4-pan pallettes and plan a few days m/u looks from those. Eyeshadow is what I have the most of and this works great for me. Every 4-5 days, I completely switch out the e/s in my 4-pan pallettes and think of new colour combinations.
However, I need to find a way to use my pigments more. They kind of just sit there most of the time.
HTH,
Kim
