Where/How did you Learn the Art of Make Up?
Everyone will have different ways in which they acquired their talents, either getting early practice with mummys make up bag at the tender age of 4 or going to make up school? How did you learn?
It all began on a rainy saturday afternoon for me at the age of 15 with my sisters make up case...and i never looked back...of course ive graduated from Rimmel and Bourjois now onto finer things
in fact when i was younger i always wanted to be a make up artist...but alas fate got in the way

13! I envy you! I started wearing makeup only when I was 25. No wonder I'm still such an idiot! Mainly I learn from forums like this. Did a personal makeup course before but didn't find it very useful

I really didn't wear makeup until my mid-20s. One of my closest friends and ex-roommates was a model and worked at MAC. She taught me everything. I'm still not as good as she is, but I now have more than 2 brown eyeshadows and a lipgloss.

I didnt wear any makeup until earlier this year... I did a little in high school but that was mostly just lipstick and stuff... So i pretty much learned everything I know from here and from anything any MAC MAs taught me when I went.

I've always loved make up but never thought if it as fun or a career until I started working for Clinique and discovered MAC. :-P

I guess I'd consider myself to be "self-taught". I played around with makeup through middle and high school, but didn't get really into it until I started college and got a job (and could afford nicer makeup and real brushes ). I basically learned by reading magazines, books, and looking online (here, LJ) and trying to imitate what I saw.

Observation and study. I started wearing makeup at about 20. I have read books by the likes of Sam Fine, Tyra Banks, Kevyn Aucoin and others. I try to ask a lot of questions when I'm at a counter and watch what they are doing - the tools they use, the colors, where they put them. And I just practice. Practice, practice, practice. I think that's the only way to get to know your face and know what looks good on you and what you like.

I did nothing! I started to play with makeup when I was 12-13 years old...
Don't be afraid to try new things, that's how I learned!

I literally learnt in the last year and a half, by looking at lots of fotd, asking a kazillion questions and reading reviews like there's no tomorrow. Because I like to try and do all the things I do well, at first it would take aaaaaaaaages to get certain makeup aspects done, but it's really just experimentation, interest and lucky enough to have an artist significant other who gives me excellent feedback.
I have flipped through 2 of Kevyn Aucoin's books, can't remember which one it was, but one of them is super-helpful for basics.

Just playing around with my grandma's makeup. That is where it all began. As far as learning how to apply I read tons of books, look at online pics and asked questions. The rest came from practice.

I did like the tyra book. It shows her with and without makeup and what they did in the process. It's called Tyra's Beauty Inside & Out. I wish I could remember more of the books that I read. I remember going to the library and searching for all books on makeup and I used to check out whatever was available. So you might try that. Or go to a Borders or Barnes and Noble and look at the books that they have. See if you can pick up any tips and tricks. I've done that too.

I started wearing it around 7th grade. It was the 80's bad hair and bad m/u back then. Back then it was all about Wet n' Wild!!!
I have learned a lot here from all the eotd/fotd. I also learn from my bother in law who is a M/A. He wants me to go to school, if I dont do the whole just at least just the beauty. I am thinking about it! =]

I always liked makeup but I kept it really simple until a couple of years ago, and moreso last Christmas when I got MAC from my sister. Now I'm a hardcore addict and I'm picking up tips and tricks from all over the place (especially here!) and experimenting a lot!

7th Grade - I've always loved it, and I really learned from teen magazines. Then when I was 18 I took a modeling acting course from John Casablancas but I really didnt' learn much except that I was already doing fine and makeup is a good investment, lol. I've gotten into doing more sophisticated eyeshadows only this year- good liners and nice high end products. :-) I'm really enjoying buying nice makeup again.. it really feels nice to have a good assortment. I've always liked makeup though.

i learned from the kevyn aucoin books and when my mom realized i was interested in it (12th grade?), she took me to makeovers so I could learn what looked good on me. I stopped wearing it for awhile and restarted a little while ago.

Hi
I startet when I was 13 years old with mascara and white lipstick, that was in the sixties - surely, I'm the oldest member on board - hope thats OK *smile*
The look of Twiggy was soo hot and every girl wanted to look like her... so me to
So I remember, me and my school class were on the ice skating center in town and had a lot of fun there. The white lipsticks looked great and fit well to this ice party.
This was also a look of the sixties which I liked and I often copied...
Until I was 40, I hardly used lip stick, but I made up my eyes usually rather strongly. Then I found in a bookshop a book "Color me beautiful" by Carol Jackson, an read it with great interest.
To my surprise, I found out that I am a cool winter typ and have to use cool colours to look fresh. Carol Jackson gives also detailed techniques how do make up your eyes and so on... and it works very well
From then on, I use only cool colours. before had I always warm tones, which let look me pale and ill With cold colors I looked very much better and fresher. Also my colleagues in the office noticed a difference and addressed me on my good appearance.
This is a long time ago but I still use the technique of Carol Jackson to do my make up. In the meanwhile my hair is rather grey, but the cool colours still work...
With best regards,
Blanche
