Going from Blonde with Highlights to Red.... HELP!
I want to change my hair color, but I need help! I am currently dark blonde with bleached out highlights. My mom and I used as frost at home kit with a cap. Now I have about 1.5 inches of root growth. I want to go dark burgandy or a warm auburn, but I have to do it myself since I don't have $100+ to spend right now at a salon. What do I need to know about at home dying? I think I am most scared because of the red tones I want to achieve. I know at-home red can sometimes go terribly wrong. HELPPP!

I wouldn't do it. I did that once at a salon and had so much trouble. The red wouldn't grab onto the blonde. What did grab was not a pretty color. I hated it.

Hey there Audrey

This might be a bit tricky if you are not going to have this done in a salon. The main thing is your highlighted pieces which will "grab" the dye and potentially have you end up with a non-uniform look. One thing you can do to help with this is use a pre-colour filler on the highlighted pieces so they do not absorb as much of the colour when you are processing.

Have you considered starting the "transition to red" using a temporary glaze or colour mousse?

As far as home colouring products go, I love, love, love Loreal's Feria.

Good luck & feel free to PM me with Qs. I've been a redhead for years.

I have highlights right now and changed my color recently. The highlighted parts were still lighter the firsttime but i have to just gradually dye it darkerto get it to look matching. Anyway maybe start off with a semi perm. color not permanant and then do perm. all over. I use clairol dyes from sallys or clairol natural instincts.

If you wanted to do this, you would have to "fill" the cuticle, when you used bleach is blew your cuticle open and the red color (which has the largest color molecules) will not grab. I would recommend you go to a professional, I think the results will turn out a lot better! Plus, red is the hardest color to maintain.

Re: Going from Blonde with Highlights to Red.... HELP!
Don't do it! Seriously! I went red brown for my wedding last Sunday and my roots did not accept the color. It stained my natural light brown roots a copper red and the rest of my hair turned out a dark auburn. Not to mention alot of my red has already gone down the drain even with color treated hair products. I have been trying with this since last november and each time the bottom grabs it and the rest lightens up with a copper color. When I am done moving I am soo going to start stripping this out.
