Got this in an email and really I think it sums quite a bit up
on my thoughts regarding 'the scene' as it were.

I wonder when people will realize that the "scene" has become homogeneous. It's full of 14 year old girls with uneven bangs, black and white striped shirts, and tattered low-top black Chuck Taylor™s, who swoon over homosexual kissing and pathetic whiny lyrics and overuse the symbols.

Their favorite quote is, invariably, "The truth is you could slit my throat and with my one last gasping breath I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt" because it like, so totally describes their relationship with that one HAWT sophomore who totally ripped their hearts out when they were like, SO in love with him.

Their favorite type of music is, of course, "emo, screamo, and hardcore", three terms which, in their minds, invariably include the bands Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, and Hawthorne Heights.

Their AIM screennames often include x's, the words "electrikk", "disaster", or some play on their favorite song from their favorite band, you know, the one they saw on MTV like a couple times, but shouldn't be on MTV because they're like, way too emo for that.

They take hundreds of black and white pictures with way too much contrast of themselves looking plaintively down at the ground, pointing a gun made of their fingers at their heads, or kissing the camera while displaying their expert application of lip gloss around their labret piercing and the thick dark eyeliner that circles their eyes.

They embrace the "dork" that is inside their polished, fashionable exteriors by writing in their LiveJournals or Xangas about how they and their friends had an 'N Sync sing-a-long at one of their sleepovers because, remember, 'N Sync is soooo not popular anymore and they like, sooo wouldn't follow any of the fads of today, so they embrace the fads of yesterday.

They adore "retro fashion", meaning anything from the 80's, because they totally used to wear neon colors and big beaded bracelets, even though they were born in, at the earliest, 1988 and remember jack shit about the fashion and culture of the 80's.

It's full of "emo boys" who often are difficult to differentiate from "emo girls", who have meaningless tattoos even though they're 15, smoke a lot of cigarettes, drink a lot of hard liquor, and are in some shitty band that plays a couple of gigs in someone's basement because they're "too cool to go mainstream" when really, they just suck.

They weigh roughly 90 pounds, wear girls' jeans that hug their asses in just the right places, belts buckled somewhere around the side of their right leg, tight striped 80's style polo shirts or band t-shirts, and skater shoes, even though they don't skate because that's soooo lame.

They write awful poetry about the dark abyss of their souls and how the gun is pointed at their heads, the trigger poised to blast away the bloody memories of a failed romance. They cried when Blink-182 broke up, and they have a secret obsession with Avril Lavigne because, like, she really IS kinda hot even though her music totally sucks.

They spend more time at the mirror than their female counterparts do, making sure that the long black shock of hair at the front of their heads lies covering one eye just so, that their lip piercing is perfectly placed so that it looks hot when they kiss other boys, that their pants are the right degree of tightness so as not to exude gayness.

Emo boys and girls often use the suffix "Xcore" to describe themselves, using a number of adjectives or nouns to accomplish this task. This is a play off hardcore music, or "hXc". Some of these descriptive words include "fashionXcore", "retroXcore", or even "yournamehereXcore."

This way of speaking is retarded or nonsensical to everyone else except those "in the scene", but it totally doesn't matter because they're too nonconformistXcore for anyone to truly understand their "scene".

They couldn't name a Sunny Day Real Estate or Rites of Spring song if it came up and bit them on their Gap Jeans-clad asses, and they claim to like the Smiths because Jesse Lacey of Brand New said they were cool.

Sure, they listen to some new "emoXcore" bands, but they're all pretty much the same five bands:
1. Taking Back Sunday
2. Senses Fail
3. Thrice
4. Hawthorne Heights
5. Story of the Year
To these promising young firecrackers, music takes a backseat to fashion in their scene of choice.

Emo girls just want to kiss emo boys, emo boys just want to kiss other emo boys, and they all want to wear tight pants and take lots of pictures of themselves. End of story. Because honestly? It's electrikk!

I don't really see what the fuss is, it's not like this hasn't been going on before now - just with a different name...grunge, alternative, new wave what-have-you. There is always a contingent of youth who find solace in being "different" (which usually requires looking the same as their peers), who look to a past they didn't live through, who think their artistic mode of expression hasn't been done a thousand times before and better. Some of these kids grow up and retain their pretentiousness, but most of them grow out of it when they realize fashion takes a backseat to real life.

And really, while it may be annoying that they don't realize they are in no way shape or form original, I don't think anything is wrong with it.

HAHA. i just laugh at the kids that are too emo for their little suburbian existence...no offense to anyone on here.
it's also amusing to me that someone can think they're so different and so cutting edge when really, they're going to shows and copying other people, and/or getting influence from bands their parents (who they just can't deal with, for they're so "normal") probably listened to.

sorry, my younger sis is going from one scene to the next, now she's trying to tell ME about the thizz face (and honey, if you're from the bay area and am as loyal to our music as i am, you DON'T need a lecture), and i'm like, UGH...anyway, i'm all defensive and kinda anti-labels, so i don't mean to be offensive, i'm just biased.

Oh, I'm so out of date this is all new to me. I just know that no matter what you do the teenagers (no offense teenagers- I stay in a room with them six hours of their school day, confiscate notes etc ) and I really feel like I "know nothing" about what they think is cool...

I remember when I got my first teaching jobs and pearl snap shirts, trucker hats, and polyesther(sp) pants came into "style" again and I LAUGHED at this kid when he walked in the room talking about how cool his shirt, was, I told him he looked like he raided my dads closet.

I know I see the 80s influenced clothes in Old Navy etc.... and part of me loves some of it,--- and then I see something that I gave to goodwill ten years ago.....

What is "EMO" please explain-I'm out of it on terminology. What is scary is this stuff starts when kids are in their early teens, getting that sense of "style' or self. My daughter is ten, lord help me.

Do you have some sort of problem? This is the second or third thread I've seen you post in where you've either a) made some inanely smart aleck remark or b) offered such quality platitudes as "Haha" in a deep thoughts thread...

I remember when a lot of that was in style the first time as well...and a lot of it I made fun of then

Thank goodness my ten year old is so frilly girly girl in INNATE nature she doesn't even remotely register with the 'scene'.

Im sick of reading these posts about emo girls or scene girls. honestly This just so happens to be my sort of style and im not the kind of girl who writes sad poetry or when they wear tight pants or flat iron their hair..... I do listen to all of the bands listed above and i feel like im being shoved into a category by everyone here. Just because I can go to freaking target and buy a striped shirt and wear it with my vans. Im considered scene?.. good lord.

It's very hard NOT to raise eyebrows at children who believe their life is full of angst and pain when they know nothing of either.

*I'm not saying none of them have been through anything in their lives, however true hardship, most of them don't know.

If you have such a bitter adversion to two people kissing, I'm surprised that revulsion doesn't carry over into not supporting companies that have an open, inclusive attitude towards sexuality in all forms.

I don't care that you're a scene kid. I do, however, care that you're a hateful bigot.

I like some "emo" bands and im completely obsessed with the 80's though I grew up in the 80's I love the music and yes I love some of the trends of the 80's (how can you not love 80's music its ALL about sex and it just puts me in a good mood lol, plus how many of us have had a manic monday lately lol)

anywho im not emo, I did have black hair for a bit but Ive wanted black hair since I was 6 I thought it was exotic lol. I used to dress kind of emo sometimes I guess but I did it because thats what I felt like wearing that day.

Anyway my point is is that not everyone that likes those things are "sooo emo" Cause I certainly am not!

I didnt mean to offend anyone with my Opinion of gay(men and women) kissing. Those who read the post know what it said Others. I have removed it. I didnt want to Offend anyone. I am definitly NOT a bigot. And i didnt mean to Come off that way, AT ALL. I consulted one of my friends about it. and he said " oh girl i know you dont like the guy on guy pda... that doenst make you a bad person. your just a freak" hes my mac shopping partner btw. he has fantastic taste and I love him to death. And his ways dont bother me. I just dont like the pda. thats all. then again i dont really like it of any type of couple. Like i said I deeply apologize to anyone that i have offended.
