IS there a thread about taking good pics for E/FOTDs?

I don't know if it's because my lens is so big or what, but I can't get my pics to come out good. The lighting is always half on the eye area or non existent. Generalyl, I've been good at taking pics, but haven't been able to accomplish a good EOTD :-( Anyone have any tips?

try taking the pictures out doors, the flash tends to wash out color.
also try not to put the camera too close (the camera itself will block the light).
if you wanna show just your eye, what i used to do is take big pics (high resolution) and then cut the eyes out and post that... i found it very hard in the beginning too...
