Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
I notice that when I wear makeup my chronic headaches are more severe. I know there are controversial ingredients in a lot of the products I use. Could they be causing/worsening my headaches?
I used to only get tension headaches, but I realized that when I started wearing eyeshadow all the time I also got migraines. Before I wore eyeshadow I NEVER had migraines (I currently use NYX and the 28 Neutral palette from Coastal Scents). I also notice that when I'm just hanging out around the house with absolutely no makeup on my headaches are either minor or non-existent.
Does anyone else notice a relationship between headaches and makeup?
I'm thinking of becoming one of those crazy people that ban certain ingredients, at least to see if it helps anything.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
I havent heard about this sort of allergy reaction to makeup on the message boards or in real life.. But you do have tons of tiny pores on your skin that absorb the makeup you wear. I wouldnt be surprised if it is causing you migraines, a lot makeup is comprised of a lot of harsh chemicals that many people are sensitive to.
Maybe you can try an organic option? Organic wear® 100% Natural Origin Makeup

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
Do you ever wear makeup and just sit around the house, or do you always go out when you have it on?

Yeah, today I put makeup on in preparation to go out but I was just sitting around for about 5 hours and my head was pounding. Then I went out and now I'm gonna get in bed and put the covers over my head and lay there until someone forces me to get up. I feel like crap.

Oh, well there goes my idea. If you only wore makeup OUT, I was going to say maybe it's something environmental giving you headaches that is outside.
I don't know what to say, but I hope you feel better. My mother has suffered from migraines for years, so I know how bad it hurts and how crappy it is to have to go through it. =(

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
I saw this subject on another theard...
Headaches From Mineral Foundation?
And my answer was...
Umm, thats kind of odd. I highly doubt it but crazy things do happen to some people.
By the way... I work for a doc who is called "The Headache Doctor" through out Northern California. And I have never heard any of my headache & migraine clients bring up makeup as a possible cause. Also, I've had some clients complain about every single thing they use, eat, smell, see, etc. that causes headaches for them.
---------------------------
What kind of lotion or e/s primer do you use?
Also, do you wear any eyeliner or something in the waterline?
Where did you buy your NYX products from? And remember that Coastal Scents gets there palettes from China. There are many companies out there that purchase their goods from a 3rd party group. But prior to reselling to companies, the 3rd party group remanufactures the makeup using cheaper ingredients to save money (just like the controversy of fake Mac items). I've bought NYX from small clothings stores, spas/small salons, etc. (and I've always wondered where they purchased the makeup from... or did they just bring it home from over seas to resell. I've seen so much fake makeup when I'm in the Philippines).
Oh yea, have you noticed that NYX and Too Faced e/s containers are the same designs (hmm, I wonder where they purchase there plastic containers from? The same distributors?).
Similar to the paraben issue. Paraben - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Items with paraben may cause problems with estrogen levels.
Who knows, there maybe an unknown chemical in your e/s that effects a small percentage of people.
But otherwise, being in the headache & migranine medical field for over 3 years... I have never heard anyone complain about makeup being a cause of headaches. But I'll surely bring it up to my boss (the doc) and her colleagues during our state meeting this Monday morning.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
The lotion I use is Eucerine Everyday Protection. The "bad" ingredients it has are PEG and Dimethicone. My foundation is Revlon Colorstay and has PEG, Dimethicone and Propylparaben. I use UDPP... don't know what's in it. Nothing on the waterline. I buy my NYX from a little beauty and accessories store. I know the NYX and Neutral palette both contain parabens. I didn't keep the packaging so I don't know what else.
I don't want to be paranoid but I've already eliminated any possibilities of food allergies. It's not my environment because I get headaches at home, in my dorm at school, in class, at work... The only thing left to point fingers at is makeup and other personal care products (I've been using an all natural lotion). Maybe I'm hypersensitive to them or something.
Or maybe I'm just bound to get headaches... that's what my doctor told me, but she was an idiot. All she said to me when I went to her after telling her horror stories of passing out and going to the ER is, "Some people just get headaches... take an advil." As if I hadn't already tried that. I told her I take twice the recommended dosage and she just told me to take as many as I need until it works! Luckily I'm not stupid enough to listen to her! She didn't even attemp to find the cause of my headaches.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
Is spooked Never heard of makeup being the direct cause of headaches -- maybe somehow the ingredients trigger the headaches..but then it could be the washing powder or soap or even the starch in your shirts..yikes!

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
Hey,
My first recommendation would be to switch to a different doctor or see if they can give you a referral to a specialist. It sounds to me like their dismissal is just arrogance and you need someone who can understand and treat the migraines.
I used to have migaines several years ago a lot and I think it may have to do with hormones/stress for me.
As for your personal migraines, I'm no doctor but I would definitely make sure you are well hydrated as dehydration is the leading causer of headaches, avoid a lot of caffeine, and stop wearing the eyeshadow for now. Much like how muscles contract and cause pain when something constricts it, I think your eyeshadow maybe weighing down your eyelids causing pain and adding to the migraine.
Good Luck and HTH!

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
I wish I could switch doctors but I have medi-cal and I can only go to certain ones. It sucks being poor! I drink more water than anyone I know... so my headaches are a complete mystery to me. Thanks for your replies/concern though. I will experiment and let you know if it is the makeup or not!

If your serious about lowering/taking away your migraines, I suggest seeing a chiropractor... specifically an Upper Cervical specialist NUCCA - National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association
If money is an issue, many chiropractors have coupons available on their websites. Or they offer financial plans.
Also review your diet. Some foods cause migraines (chocolate, caffine, anything with msg, etc.)
I have a list of things you can do and avoid to minimize headaches. I will post the list here for you tomorrow.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
Check your eyeliner...
I was using the Wet n Wild liners and realized that everytime I did, my eyes would first dry out and then I'd get these pounding headaches... It didn't click to me that it was the eyeliner. Until I stopped using them, and no more dry eyes or headaches... So try that and see what happens.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
The term migraine refers to a class of recurring headaches sharing certain characteristic symptoms: headache pain to the forehead or temples, often on one side and typically accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light, the headache lasts several hours, sometimes the patient has an aura – a disturbance to vision, smell, taste or hearing that precedes the headaches. Migraines occur with and without auras.
Migraine occurrence can often be traced to a traumatic incident like a whiplash, a fall, or injury. Spinal bones out of alignment can create pressure on the brain stem that injures the nerves of the head and neck. Structural correction relieves that pressure.
Hormonal shifts can precipitate or get rid of them. Hormone balancing can help. Naturopathy, acupuncture and homeopathy are useful for this purpose as well having an overall beneficial effect to balance the body’s energy and chemistry.
Migraines are neurovascular events. They occur due to some faulty connections of nerves that cause adverse opening and closing of the blood vessels in the brain. Many pharmaceutical drugs have been developed to relieve the pain of migraines but none have stopped the reason for the headache. To change the headache, you need to get to the underlying cause and resolve it.
Foods that Trigger Migraines/Headaches:
Yogurt, Nuts (peanut butter, etc.), Ages or Cured Meat, Canned meat, Caffeine, Canned Soup, MSG, Chocolate, Buttermilk or sour cream, Meat tenderizer, Brewer’s yeast, Avocados, Onions, Pickles, Red Plums, Sauerkraut, Snow Peas, Soy Sauce, Alcohol (especially red wine).
Other Triggers:
Prolonged Stress, Dehydration, Poor air (Smokey, polluted), Visual stimulation (quickly changing patterns), Heat exposure, Lack of sleep
Healthy tips for dealing with your migraine when it occurs:
Lie in a quiet, darkened room with no interruption. When you feel the headache coming on, put a hot pack on your neck. As the headache advances to the extremely painful part, put a cold pack on your neck. Caffeine drinks may help (coke, coffee, tea, others). Excedrin Migraine (contents caffeine) may help.
Natural Supplements That Relieve of Suppress Migraine Headaches:
Feverfew, Butterbur, Coenzyme Q10, Grape Seed Extract, Comprehensive Vitamin/Mineral Supplement (must have sufficient amounts of therapeutic value). Fish OilPine Bark Extract combined with Vitamin C & E.
---------------
Sorry for all the info, but I do follow under my boss' wings. Her dedication is mines as well. I hope the list helps you.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
I've never heard of makeup being the direct cause of headache... this is so new for me. And I wear makeup every day, even when I am home!! Maybe the fragrances are triggering this reaction to you. That happen to me when I am around people that use lots of perfume.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
^^ that happens to me as well if i used eyeliner or shimmery shadows and it gets into my eyes. I then start getting dull eye pain and then eventually turns into a migraine. I would stay away from anything that has glitter and make sure that when you put on eyeliner that you use pencil not liquid , as that tends to go inside your inner eye corners. I used MAC e/s too but i tend to use a paint pot underneath so that it sticks and i make sure that i tap off excess e/s so that it doesnt get into my eyes.

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
It could be that the makeup is out of date.
I have a Rimmel mascara which I love but after a few months of using it, one day it will hurt my eyes when I take it off and then I know it's gone off/not good for me anymore. That was kinda dangerous as I felt I was blinding myself as time went on, luckily now I've got a new HG mascara which doesn't do that to me after months of usage.
The way I see it is, no amount of money can justify you permanently harming yourself. I know at the time you might feel horrible about chucking something away which you worked hard for but you will be grateful in the long run when you no longer have your migranes.

I just want to say, back in the time where i used revlon colorstay I experienced also an headache-like feeling! sometimes it caused a real headache too. I don't know if it was the scent or the actual product, but when i switched foundations, i never had this feeling again!
I believe it was the one in this packaging, i don't know if the newer ones are that much different..

Re: Makeup causing headaches an nausea?
I totally believe the headache thing. I feel like whenever I get home from school, I can't wait to wash my face because I feel like a headache is coming on. In fact, I'm getting one now. :/
I always thought it was the face stuff, though.
