Honestly i think its just trial and error. I pretty much stuck with neutrals at first then I started watching tutorials which gave me the confidence to try bolder colors.
Also you should go to the MAC counter and play with the colors. An MA could give you some reccomendations. HTH

Re: Basic Must Have MAC
think the term "basics" varies from girl to girl
some need colours, some nudeshades...
real basics could be
* bare canvas paint
*blacktrack fluidline
*grain and naked lunch e/s
*makeup of your choice, mine is studio fix fluid nc15
*powder of your choice (mine is non-mac)
* some l/g - perhaps ensign?
*fix+
and that maybe it

Re: Basic Must Have MAC
Mmmmm...the basics. You know in all sincerity there is nothing about my affair with MAC that has been "basic" and nearly everything in my current collection is (or was) a "must have." MAC makeup is a must have. In my extremely biased opinion, no makeup lover is really loving if his or her collection lacks MAC. (In fact, I think the word "makeup" is a derivation of the name of the ancient Egyptian goddess MACup, who was known for her infinite wisdom and fierce eyeliner. ) I suppose I could list a few products which make my daily groove much much groovier...
Lips:
Spice l/l (You had me at "hello" and I had you at my very first visit to a MAC counter.)
Instant Gold l/g (I don't like to think of a time when we did not know each other.)
Face:
Pleasantry Blush (Perhaps, this is a fling but our summer romance has made my cheekbones sing!) **Note the well-placed rhyme**
Charged Water (Um, how do you feel about a dewy refreshed face 10 hours post makeup application? )
Eyes:
Carbon e/s (You line, you define, you give my eyes a bold underline, and you are oh so fine... )
Espresso e/s (No self-respecting neutrals pallette is complete without you!)
Parrot e/s (How did you get passed the doorman?!?! That's right, this is MAC! I have pledged my undying loyalty to MAC based on this observation...As a brilliant turquoise frost you are one of the most sought after and revered shadows, and there is no denying that you are a standard staple. I daresay, you are a basic necessity for everyone from 'tweens to drag queens!)
Your Ladyship p/m (This little piggie went Wee, wee, wee all the way from my lashline to browbone...highlighter--check; unassuming neutral color--check; all-purpose highlighter--check; blah--everything but!)
Tools:
Brushes (188, 190, 217, 239, 266)--Whether I create art or fart is more about application...
Bad application=operator error
Good application=Good brushes
Traincase ( 'nuf said...hope the new model is much bigger, because I intend to be buried in it with my makeup one day)
Either I have helped create a list of wonderful MAC staples or I have warned you that I am a flaming hot mess about MAC. Both will contribute to a greater embrace of MAC and its devotees...if not, I suggest bailing now because this is as basic as most of us can get (or at least me anyway)!

Re: Basic Must Have MAC
I'm generally a newbie to makeup so I'm all about basics! Here's my list

- soft brown e/s
- beautiful iris e/s
- nocturnelle e/s
Painterly p/p
Indianwood p/p - I'm really tan so if I'm too lazy to do a full face I just swipe this all over my lid for a nice subtle shimmer
Brow powder!
Face
Fix+
Mineralize blush in nuance - the color just looks so natural!
Lips
Pinkarat l/g
Bombshell l/s

Here is my take on the purpose of lip liner...
To your average lip, l/l is much like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
Thin lips? Just draw 'em bigger.
Uneven lips? Boost one and/or downsize the other.
Lipstick bleed into tiny lines around the lips (most noticable when wearing red lipstick)? Buckle your lipstick in with a healthy perimeter of l/l.
Lipstick color fade? Take an l/l in a similar shade as the lippie (or nude depending on your desired color intensity) and fill the lips completely THEN apply lippie.
You see where I am going with this...lip liner is a sure thing and it will do whatever you would like!
For my money, I feel like Spice is the surest thing because it is a perfect nude which makes it universally compatible with lippies. I often skip the lippie, line, and lightly fill in my lips, then I dab some gloss in the center (My fave=Instant Gold). You may also remember Miss Spice as the l/l Linda Evangelista chose as her fave during the height of her career. IMO it is Spice that should not get out of bed for less than $10,000!
