How to apply eyeshadow?
Please forgive me for asking such a stupid question but i've always wondered if i'm doing this right, so i guess now is as good a time as ever to find out!
What is the order of eye makeup application??? Do you do your lid first, then crease then highlight? Or am I doing this all wrong? Well....I know there's no real right or wrong way but i'm looking for some tips here!
Can someone please gimme a hand here? I'm fairly useless and i'm self taught so I have nooooooo idea! I know i might be asking the earth here but what about maybe a tutorial? Not a whole face, just on the eyes, with quite out there colours so the positioning etc is very obvious?
*Runs away and hides for asking such a pathetic question*

I went to a MAC Pro class and Gregory did it from the brow down: highlight, crease, lid, liner, mascara. I go -lid, crease, bone, highlight, liner, mascara. I think it's good just to do it the way it feels best for you.

There's no rules about what order you "have" to apply your makeup in, but the way you do it does make it easier I do it pretty much the same basic way too:
-inner lid
-outer lid
-crease
-brow bone
-highlights
-liner
-mascara.
I never will get the whole lipstick then liner thing though...it just doesn't make sense to me. Very bassakwards IMNSHO.

If I were to do everything, this would be the order:
Brows
Base
Inner lid
Outer lid
Upper lid (crease on most people, but I basically have monolids)
Brow bone/highlight
Liner
Mascara

I go from the darkest to the lightest colour to make sure that I can blend the colour easily:
* Outer V
* Crease
* Center lid
* Inner lid
* Brow bone
* Liner
* Mascara
I think everyone has its own technique!

This wierd technique actually works great for me, especially with light glosses/lipsticks and then using Hover l/l which is my HG colour which makes any lip clolour work for me.

For eyes, I do:
base
lid
crease
highlight
liner
mascara
brows
I also do the lipstick first/lipliner second technique...just works better for me on myself...when I am doing someone's makeup, I do the opposite...have no idea why!

It's not a pathetic question. I hadn't really thought of it before, and it looks like we all do the same thing in variation - so it can't be that crucial. I do:
1. base
2. inner v
3. highlight
4. lid
5. crease
6. outer v
7. mascara
8. liner
9. brows

It's not a stupid question at all.. Everyone does it different, and you just have to find your own technique (like I put on face makeup after eye makeup while others usually switch it around).
I do it:
1.Base
2.Inner Lid
3. Highlight
4. Entire Lid
5. Crease
6. Outer V
7. Mascara
But ofcourse, i don't wear eyeliner, but if i did, i'd put that between 6 nd 7!

My MA told me a neat trick that I use now. If you're like me, and have a problem keeping your eyeshadow down where you want it you can try this:
lid-base (paint, shadestick,etc)
crease (neutral skin tone)
inner lid
mid lid
outer v/crease
highlight
liner
mascara

I usually go from top to bottom (brow bone to lashline), but if I need more depth/intensity in my application I follow what you've listed.

Re: How to apply eyeshadow?
It's interesting to read how everyone does their eyes! I think it's sort of a matter of 'personal taste', and what gives you the best results, and also what your eyes are like. I do mine like this:
1. Primer
2. Neutral colour all over lids
3. Inner lid (usually a lighter/accent colour; depends what look you are going for! If you are doing a bright look, I apply the lighter colours on)
4. Outer lid (with the darker colours; I do this after the inner lid/lighter colours so that I don't overdo the darker colour and look like I got into a punch fight!)
5. Blend! Then touchup crease or whatever needs to be done
6. Highlight on the brow bone!
7. Brows and then liner/mascara.
You should really experiment and try different methods, that's how I found the best way to apply eyeshadow worked for me. I am still working on my blending

Re: How to apply eyeshadow?
I've always done it the "primer, lid, crease, V, highlight, line, mascara" but this makes me want to purposely do my routine differently just to see if I like it better.
Asking questions is a good way to get people thinking about the methods they use to do things. I know at work we change things every now and then when a new employee says "So why do we do things X way?" Sometimes that new person has a really great different way that we've never seen because we're stuck in our routines.

Re: How to apply eyeshadow?
Well, when I studied professional make up they taught me that in order to get better results i should use the Italian Technique, which is as simple as applying a neutral color eye shadow like beige all over the eyelid as a base. It kind of works like bare canvas and all those products but it is cheaper! That way you will notice that your make-up lasts longer and you don't get those unsightly lines (that look kind of greasy) after some hours. After that, you can start wherevere you want, but it is easier starting with the lighter colours and applying the darker colours in the end, so that the results look more clean. Whenever you apply a dark colour over a light one it looks dirty. I hope you found this useful! Good luck!

yes. this is what i always do. im not a professional AT ALL and most of the time i dont do anything spectacular but when i do try to look nice i notice that this is the best way to go for me, but its not a bad question! i think there is truly no answer though. everyone just has their own style of doing it. play around with e/s and see which way works best for you!

i too put on foundation after my eyes. i usually go for an intense eye. and i like being able to do my eyes, take a mac wipe and clean up the fallout and then paint my face. especially when im using loose pigments on my eye. that stuff falls all over the are that becomes the under eye highlight area and can affect the color that im actually using on my under eye highlight. once i used bright fuchsia (pro) pigment on my lids. i'd already done my foundation. i got outside and realized the entire space from my bottom lid to my cheek was hot pink. so being able to pack on as much carbon as i want knowing my foundation isnt set is a plus for me
eyes first is also the way a lot of mac artist work.

Re: How to apply eyeshadow?
I am also definitely a supporter of doing eyes first, then foundation. It just always made more sense to me to do it that way round!
And to answer your question...
1. Highlight
2. Lid
3. Crease
4. Liner and mascara
I do my brows at the very end once all my foundation etc is on.

Re: How to apply eyeshadow?
I usually put on my eye makeup in the following way:
- primer
- loose powder under my eyes to protect my base from any fallout when applying the eyeshadow, I wipe this off when I'm done with the eyeshadow
- inner corner
- lid
- outer v/crease
- highlight/brow bone
- blending and touchups
- brows (I do this before my liner since I use the same brush for it, MAC #208)
- eye liner
- mascara
I think it's easier to begin in the inner corner and work my way upwards, by that way you're not limited to a certain ammount of space where you can put the next colour.

Re: How to apply eyeshadow?
It's interesting to see what order people do their eye makeup in. For me, it's:
- brows
- base
- lid
- crease
- outer "V"
- browbone
- highlight (brow + tearduct)
- lower lashline (if applicable)
- liner
- mascara
