My makeup takes six minutes from primer to finish,and I use a coffee cupfull of brushes, but I have been doing makeup for over three decades. Foundation,concealer,buffer,powder,blusher,fanbrus h and an awful lot of eyebrushes each for a different purpose. I'm all about the area just above the crease,and cheekbones. I'm Russian and Chinese,so I highlight my really high cheekbones and deepset almond eyes to the max. I think it takes me about 10 brushes to do my makeup in six minutes. The only brush I don't need is for eyebrows. Eyebrows have never been important to me,mine are a bit sparse, and making them more dramatic detracts from my face,which has rather defined features in a small space. I don't think the amount of brushes are important,its the total effect. Most of mine are blending brushes. I don't ge too dramatic,I'm not going clubbing....

All the brushes I own are really good quality. Most are Sephora professional,a few are just sable artist brushes with no names,but good quality. I have a few synthetics for concealor-since I am over 40 and have under eye issues,and occasionally I use a foundation brush. I use a synthetic blush brush by Too Faced because it deposits the most color very smoothly. I once saw Tyra Banks put on her blusher and she would go "ding,ding ding" and that was enough blush...she just buffed it in with takilon......it looked fab. I start with contour first ,then blusher. I do not use highlighter because my cheekbones are under my eye sockets and there are some nice lines there,so I use lighter concealor with a synthetic brush.
I like natural hair brushes, I use John Freida shampoo on brushes.(I wah my hair in Pantene or Clairol or Neutrogena....)Brushes deserve special attention.
Brushes need to be soft and sensuous. If they feel great,you will use them. They have to deposit enough color....
You can not skimp on brushes.....it effects the finished product. I learned that from being both an artist (working on a doctorate)and a makeup fanatic. Keep your brushes clean....if the hair is natural, use gentle shampoo, and not baby shampoo. Baby shampoo is so alkaline (like bleach....it won't cause tears cause tears are over 7 pH wise) you could do a slow perm with it. Use shampoo for color treated hair.
Buy multi taskers. The 187 brush (or Sephora Stippler) can buff ,apply foundation and blush all in one session.

I'd say I use about 3-5 on most days

*2 or 3 for eyeshadow (a large shading brush and a blending brush)
*1 big powder brush for blot powder (I LOVE M.A.C's 187 brush!) sometimes I'll use the same brush for bronzer and blush.
*And sometimes a seporate blush brush.
*I almost alway use a damp makeup sponger for my foundation, LOL I don't care what anyone says, I like that way it appears much better with the sponge.

And I'm sure I randomly use other brushes depending on how I feel.

i realized i don't wear make up as much as i should. i've mentioned this before but, i think i find more joy in buying and looking at my bought make up than applying make up. i have serious problems.

I use one for powder, blush, and a small one for under my eyes when I want that effect. I almost always use my fingers for applying eyeshadow to my lids, am I the only one? Is this bad? Hah. I find that using brushes for that specific purpose gets color everywhere for me. But perhaps I am just made of suck.

I have a few MAC brushes, sephora brushes, sable artist's watercolor brushes, and a few others from Everyday Minerals. This thread inspired me to actually count the brushes I use everyday. The count will vary depending upon whether I use my liquid mineral foundation or powder mineral foundation.

1 small concealer brush
skunk brush [not MAC 187] for liquid mineral makeup
slanted squirrel brush for silk/pearl powder
dome squirrel brush for powdered MMU
162 contour brush to apply powder MMU along nose
kabuki brush to buff in the powdered mineral makeup
taklon brush for applying blush
fan brush for applying highligher along the cheekbone
round goat hair brush for base eyeshadow

another eyeshadow brush for outer V

OK, so that's 13! Geez, how did I ever manage to get along with only one brush? Oh yeah, that was back in the sponge applicator days!

I use my fingers as well....everyone says its weird but I get a real good look with eyeshadow
