Ingredients of MAC products? Concerning animal derived ingredients
Are there any animal derived ingredients in Mac products? Particularly the lip ones?

If you are near a freestanding store you can ask them. I had the same concern a while ago and they looked up ingredients in a book for me. But, I had to ask about specific products. I remember there being sheep bones in one of the skincare products- maybe a whitening one.
You also may be able to ask online about a specific product. I emailed MAC about animal derived ingredients and the person said I needed to ask about a particular product.

As far as I know not many, if any, lip products have animal products in them. The only thing that comes to mind is carmine and that's from a bug (it's used very often). Here's more info on that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine The only other product is beeswax.
In regard to animals though, you'd have to check the labels. As FemmeNoir says, it's usually in more cleaning products than in the makeup itself. More chance of getting an animal product in something more liquid then dry. In all the make-up I own though, the only animal products I have contain beeswax and carmine. So, you should be safe. But when in doubt, ask.

Funny you bring this up. I was just bitching about it when I got my new ingredient appendix. I had forgotten about carmine - which is an age old way of producing beautiful red dyes - but it's made through crushing up beetles this website: http://webexhibits.org/pigments/indi...y/carmine.html explains it.
pseudopterogoria elisabethae is a coral (an animal for those who don't know) and they use that as a skin conditioner and Acetyl glucosamine aka a crab's carapace/exoskeleton as a skin conditioning agent in the "lightful" moisturizers.
HMMM.

Unless things have changed significantly since I did my zoology degree, the castor bean plant from which castor oil is derived is, as its name suggests, a plant

It's also worth pointing out that lanolin, beeswax, milk protein and whey protein are products of living animals which can be harvested without harming the animals just as hair can be harvested to make brushes.

Does anyone know what this is - "7-Dehydrocholesterol" (its in the Pro-Preferred White Intensified & Strobe Cream)???
I'm disappointed about this and the Carmine (for some reason I had it in my head they didn't use Carmine...)

Ooh i'm going to need time to read all these ingredients, thankyou to everyone who's posted and taken time to type out all these big words! I really appreicate it.
I'm not vegetarian but i am Muslim which means any animal product i use has to be halal, it's hard to do this though so i generally don't want to be putting lip stuff on which has animal ingredients especially in Ramadhan.
Which incidentally we have just found out starts tonight! Ramadhan Mubarak!

It is a provitamin present in the skin of humans as well as the milk of mammals that becomes vitamin D3 when exposed to ultraviolet light. It can be extracted from wool as well as animal skin.

This is a wonderful thread, I'm glad you asked this question sushi_flower. I'm going to render down the info in this thread, add some clarifying information as to what each of these ingredients are, and make a FAQ on this for future referance.
Please do continued to add information to this thread as you find it.

Thanks caffn8me So it could be from milk or wool or skin... I'm not vegan but am a strict vegie, and could cope with milk/wool, but do have issues if it came from skin...

A FAQ would be brilliant, well done!!! I've done my research but somehow I still thought MAC products were fine :S I guess the 'no animal testing' aspect has been focussed on (which is great) but the animal products aspect has slipped under the radar

The difficulty is knowing which it actually came from. You could ask M·A·C but it's possible that they don't even know. There are quite a few pharmaceutical manufacturers supplying the product and I've tried to find more information about their manufacturing processes (specifically the source) and haven't been able to. Good luck!

Concern about parabens probably warrants a new thread as parabens aren't animal products.

HMMM.
We were talking about this at basic yesterday! This came up because of the Artist wishlist always have red e/s and our trainer told us to forget about it because of the red dye being a possible irritant ot the eye area. And of course she had to ask us if we knew where the red dye came from that was FDA approved for ingestion, and of course it was carmine!

I'm a strict vegetarian, and I e-mailed MAC in May. At first, they said I'd have to ask product by product, I asked for a few, and they sent me this whole list.
Dear Ms. Jacqueline,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in M.A.C.
In regards to your inquiry, the Eyeshadows do not contain any animal
ingredients. Listed below are products that contain animal derived
ingredients.
We trust the above addresses your concern. We hope that we have the
opportunity to serve you in the near future.
Sincerely,
Virginia Swierupski

Refined lanolin is often used as a bonding agent in pressed powders. Lanolin = oil = fat.
However, I don't have an ingredient list at hand for SFP, so I can't say if that's the fat they're talking about. Sounds like the contents of another lame Myspace bulletin, though.
