Re: What happens at a MAC interview... (counter)
Hey guys I was wondering if anyone knew what steps we have to do at the make-up demo/interview. Do we have to go full out primer, foundation, powder, mascara, liner, shadow, lipstick, liner, EVERYTHING?!?! Or is it our choice?

How i would change my selling technique if i was nearing the end of the week and not near my sales goal?
what MAC products i owned?
if i had reliable transportaton to go to basic training in the next state?
How i would deal with conflicts with coworkers?
How would i feel about constructive criticism from a manager, how i would feel about constructive criticism from a seasoned counter artist?

How i would describe myself?
Where I see myself in a year?
What i think a MAC artist's duties were?
What i think customer service is? teamwork?
What is an example of when i gave great customer service
How I would increase the sale if someone came in wanting carbon e/s?
that's all i can remember but i was asked 2 pages of questions. Some practical advice i can give is if you won't understand the question then ask fo clarification some of the questions were worded funny so i asked what she meant and she was glad to re-word it. Also make sure you ask questions when given the chance it shows interest. HTH

I applied at a Macy's counter today and the mangers (yes there were two because its a launch day) asked me alot of these questions after checking my resume and then gave me an official app... Is there a reason for this? After I finished and gave them the app she said she was sending it to the recruiter but they arent hiring. I dont know if I made a good impression and they wanted me on file or what.I just thought it was weird usually you will get a try back in a few months. Same thing happened when I hit up a freestanding store in georgetown only she didnt give me an app... Maybe because I am in a major metro area.
What do you guys think?

Hi, I'm new.
What are your chances of getting hired or at least getting to the demo interview if you've never had any retail experience? I work with people and I basically "sell" food to them lol. There elderly people so sometimes you have to convince them to eat lol.

^they are looking for retail
Anyway, I just got hired as a permanent employee for part-time. Woot woot!
I didn't do a demo interview, but I had two interviews same day. The first one was with the Counter manager and Assistant counter manager. After their interview I went to interview with the MRO, and I was offer the position the day after.

The 3 positions that were available have been filled. I'll ask when they are hiring again for freelance.

Hi! Just curious to why you didn't have to do a demo. The Nordstrom I interviewed at said that I *might* have to do a demo. Are you by any chance at a Nordstrom? Thanks!

No it wasn't.
I think I didn't have to since I worked as freelance the weekend prior for the manager's roommate/best friend. While working as a freelance that weekend I did make-up for a bridal party. The make up looked awesome and the girl was completely grateful and loved it. Don't hold me to it since that part is speculation on my part.

It will be the same as they asked before, but add more sales or customer service questions. The demo is the same (from I hear since I didn't do a second one) they will ask you to recreate a face chart or do a day look a bring it to night.

Our group interview was fun and I think most of the questions we were asked were already posted here, here are some I can remember:
What's your ideal work environment?
Who is your inspiration in fashion and make up?
How do you set your goals, achieve them and what do you do if you didn't achive them?
How would your friends and coworkers describe you?
What do you think a busy day of a MAC artist looks like?
What's your understanding of customer service?
What would you do if there is a problem between you and your co-worker?
Why MAC artists dress in black?
How do you behave on your first day of work to get to know your team?
This is a mixture of questions from the group and individual interviews. Hopefully it's of help to somebody!
how would u answer those questions?

Re: What happens at a MAC interview... (counter)
I'm so frustrated guys...
I'm a cosmetology student and I've had ZERO luck on getting hired in the most basic, entry-level counter positions at drug stores, etc.
WHAT DO I DO? If I can't get makeup retail experience there, then where can I get it?

Retail experience is almost always a must, but still try applying!

Re: What happens at a MAC interview... (counter)
About the age thing: When I was group interviewed I was 17, and everyone said how old they were at the interview! I didn't have my second and third interviews until just after my 18th birthday though, they wrote down my birthday on my resume so they could call me as soon as I was old enough and when they were hiring!
Why MAC artist wear all black : To keep the focus on our faces of course!
When I went to my group interview I brought my portfolio when most people don't. It turned out being a great thing for me because after the interview I snagged the manager and asked her if she has a moment to look through it, she started looking through it but then said she'd better say goodbye to some more people and she asked me if I could bring it to my next interview! So I did that, so her and the ass.manager could look through it with me together!
At the demo interview, yes you have to do everything from prepping the skin, to setting the makeup. Eyes lips skin, everything!

"If we wanted to work as a full-time, or freelancer/on-call."
So if I don't really have a preference but do prefer getting as much work as possible, should I say something like "I prefer full-time but I'm open to freelancer or on-call."?? Would that make them put me anywhere since I may be more open than others?
