A news I saw in a French paper this morning: according to the Wall Street Journal, L'oreal signed an agreement to buy UD for 300 to 400 mln $...

Wow.
I'm curious what will happen with UD's cruelty free-ness when it's under L'Oreal's roof.

I also hope that UD will then finally come back to counters in Germany!

After the whole China mayhem, I'm not sure they will change their policy. But even if they don't, I'm sure a lot of people will stop buying UD because they don't approve of L'Oreal and its policies.

L'Oreal owns the Body Shop, which has a cruelty-free policy. The way L'Oreal operates, their brands are left to run their own affairs pretty separately, so you can have different branches following different paths. Also, each one tends to do their own development. Although the parent (L'Oreal proper) borrows from the "kids", there isn't a lot of sharing between brands. In fact, they're quite often competing for resources.

Being owned by L'Oreal likely won't change UD's policies, but, as Merenwen mentions, there are some customers who will avoid a brand simply because they don't want the money to end up with L'Oreal.

Thanks for posting. Sad to see that most companies cannot be independent from giants such as LVMH ( owns Sephora among many others ), Shiseido ( owns Nars among others ), Coty or l'Oréal.

They were cruelty-free under LVMH's roof... which was for most of the 2000s. Why wouldn't they remain so under L'Oreal?

THIS. *nods* Personally, I'm hoping UD will be just fine.

I had zero idea they were "cruelly made". Please let me in the loop. Thanks.
The crux of the matter, as explained/pointed out in the links below, is that while L'Oreal don't test their finished products on animals, they say nothing about testing the ingredients and/or ingredient mixes on animals i.e. since they're not saying "we don't test our ingredients or finished products on animals" (like many BUAV/Leaping Bunny-approved companies), then it's fairly obvious that *something* is tested on animals somewhere, whether it's by in-house laboratories, or contracted companies (which, BTW, is another way companies get around saying "we don't test on animals" - they don't, but they pay someone else to do it for them!

NB: please be aware some of the links contain images of animals who have been tested on, which some people may find upsetting
