M·A·C COSMETICS NAIL TREND F/W ’09 COLLECTION
Q&A WITH JIN SOON CHOI
Q: M·A·C and Jin Soon – it feels like such a natural match for your first-ever brand collaboration. How did the collaboration come about?
A: It was important to me to partner with a brand that embraced bold trend-driven colours and had a strong tie to fashion – and M·A·C is all about that. From the beginning with M·A·C, everything flowed naturally, and there was a real connection in the development of this collection. As soon as we started working together, I was able to unleash my vision and really express myself through these fashion-forward colours. M·A·C really got the direction I was going in and encouraged me throughout the whole process.
Q: What was first on the agenda with this collaboration?
A: I’ve opened three Jin Soon Hand and Foot Spas in New York City over the last 10 years, with that I have a direct connection and knowledge about the colours and textures real women want for their nails. In the past couple of years women have forgone beige, neutral colors and instead, opted for colours that were once thought of as experimental, shades only a celebrity or model would wear – I’m talking about blues, blacks and deep purples. Now, women are pushing the envelope even further when it comes to nail colours. I wanted to take that one step further and expand the colour range with this collection, giving women even bolder nail colour choices.
Q: Mission accomplished with these colours – what helped inspire the range?
A: My husband is an architect, and I am constantly drawing inspiration and colour ideas from his creations. I also have tons of exposure to fashion trends through my work at the fashion shows and on magazine shoots. I wanted to create colours that were not only incredibly fashion-forward and edgy, with an editorial feel to them but also were totally wearable for the everyday women. I love all of the colours but am especially excited about the green hues: Dry Martini and Beyond Jealous. I think come Fall ‘09, green is going to be
Q: Beyond Jealous is the green shade we saw on the models nails at the Doo.Ri Fall/Winter 2009 show?
Click “Read More” below for the answer to this and other Qs posed to Jin Soon Choi….
A: Yes, straight from the runway. Doo.Ri wanted a strong, tough look to go with her collection so that’s how we chose the colour. The green on the nails made a strong statement and was the perfect compliment to her collection. It looked beautiful.
Q: It’s obvious fashion-forward colours were important to you; what else were you setting out to do with this collection that would make it a must-have for women?
A: I was determined to create a polish with enough texture and colour payoff that one coat of polish was enough. I wanted saturated, shiny colour with this collection. I’ve worked with many polishes out there, and when you apply one coat, you can barely see the colour – it’s streaky and inconsistent. Those polishes don’t work for real women in a hurry, on editorial shoots or at fashion shows when time is at a minimum.
One coat of any of the six colours is all a woman on-the-go needs. I hear it all the time on shoots and at shows – women want something beautiful but functional for their nails; sometimes, they don’t have time to sit there for two coats. The texture of these polishes covers the entire nail evenly in just one coat; finish with the Overlacquer as a top coat, and you’re out the door.
Q: Your thriving salons are a testament to the fact that nails are an important part of a woman’s appearance. How has the world of nails evolved since you started decades ago?
A: Nails used to be very understated – they played a secondary role to makeup and hair. Now, women realize that nails can act as an accessory – an easy way to add colour to their look. It’s also a way to express individuality without making a commitment. Nail polish isn’t a tattoo – it’s only temporary – so I always tell my clients to have fun with their colour and be adventurous. It doesn’t hurt that women are much more fashion-savvy and educated these days, experimenting with an adaptation of what they see on fashion shows on TV and on models in print and working that into their look.
Q: Is a woman’s nail look completely independent of her makeup look?
A: Makeup and nails definitely go together but they shouldn’t match. It’s more about contrasting colours that work together and work for your skin tone. If you wear red lipstick, wear something on your nails that goes with red – like a black polish. The whole look has to work together – makeup, nail colour, fashion – but a bit of contrast brings out the best.
Do you match your nails to your makeup? Match your toes to your fingernails? What are you picking up from MAC’s Fall Winter 09 Nail Trend Collection? Psssttt…you can get them online now at MACCosmetics.com. The main promo isn’t up yet, but the new polishes are listed in the Nails section.
I have a new love. It’s pretty serious. We met and it was like fireworks. My husband will just have to understand. The object of my desire? I’m talking about Cool Reserve nail lacquer from MAC’s upcoming F/W Nail Trend 09 collection.
Jin Soon Choi got the height of manicuredom for a reason and that reason is utter genius! Remember all of the muted greys and lavenders of seasons past that we all adored? Cool Reserve nail lacquer is all those best-in-show polishes mixed into one brilliantly, amazing colour. It will be one of your spot-on fall faves. Neutral, yet edgy. Perfection.

What do you think, loves?
Confession. I like fall and winter better than summer. I love the chill, the rain, and watching the change in seasons. Perhaps that is why in the middle of a sweltering August I am lemming hard on a new fall hat. People, mark my words, the cloche hat is it. I love this hat. It is adorably feminine and chic. Completely anachronistic, but hey, so am I.
Just imagine this with a sharply tailored trench or wool coat. How about wide-leg wool trousers and a sweater with a wrap? Oh yeah, I am wishing summer away just so I can wear a sexy hat. Don’t throw anything at me. September is just weeks away, you know.
Now my final challenge; to find a cloche that fits my enormous head size of 7 3/8. People, I have a bigger hat size than my husband. So. Not. Sexy.
What do you think? Like it? Hate it? Or just too damn soon to think about fall hats!

Fall’s runways were dominated by two words: bold and feminine. Strong shouldered and form-hugging silhouettes, extreme heels and provocative thigh-high boots, and a color palette of classic hues turned up a notch to Technicolor volumes. These trends also illustrate the NARS Fall collection.
“For this collection, I wanted to create something fragile and strong, and seductive but not aggressive,” said François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics. The combination of strength and refinement has become a hallmark of NARS, and is particularly fitting this season as the brand celebrates its 15th anniversary.

I know you are on info overload, having just heard the dish on fall’s collections, but you will just have to fight through it and be strong. Here are the names of the upcoming MAC winter collections* and my guesses as to their content:
Magic, Mirth, and Mischief
Yay, holiday!! We can probably expect this to come in the usual multiple parts: Miniature sets, the colour collection, eye and lip palettes and the Viva Glam palette offerings.
Oh yeah baby , it’s June and we are salivating and speculating over holiday already. We really are a bit off in the head, aren’t we?

Warm and Cozy
I like the sound of this. Makes me think of hot chocolate, crepes and a warm fire. MAC, could you just transition those three things into a quad? kthxbai!
Chill Out (Working Name)
Based on past collection release patterns, I am guessing a collection the likes of Danse, N/Naked, and Chill. Nice and Subtle. Please God, let there be a Pleasureflush MSF.
I know most of us could use a little Palm Beach in our lives during chilly January!
Studio Fix Lash
Hmmm….another mascara. *crosses fingers*
Cool Nudes with Brows
Hmmm…what do you guys think? A focus on skin and brows? Perhaps a brow quad?
Well….what have you heard? What are your guesses?
* Remember that prelim info may include working names and is subject to change.
Thanks to forum member joshuasebastien for the heads up on the collections!
