Congratulations to Specktra member TDoll for winning this month’s tutorial contest!!! Your votes decided she was the winner for this month. TDoll will receive the prize of a $25 gift certificate to an online e-retailer, and a 4 month upgrade to a Premium Member subscription to Specktra.net.

Thank you so much, TDoll, for your tutorial, and to all who participated. We are greatly looking forward to next month’s entries!

The look:

Here’s what you’ll need:

(MAC unless stated otherwise) -similar products will work fine -
Top Row:
Prep+Prime Skin, Studio Fix Fluid NC25, Studio Stick Concealer NC20, Blot Powder Medium, 187, 194, Essence of Beauty powder brush, Bare Escentuals kabuki brush, 239, Studio Gear #34, 219, BE mini powder, Miss Makeup eye blender, Benefit mini powder, 168, 116, Benefit hard angle
Middle Row:
Maybelline Define a Brow Medium Brown, Sally Hansen Prep+Perfect lip primer, CCB Pearl, SS Beige-ing, NYX Shadow Stick in Milk, Solar Riche bronzer, Sculpt and Shape Powder in Bone Beige/Emphasize, Cute powder blush, Fix+, CG Lashblast mascara, spoolie brush
Third Row:
(See next picture for shadow colors), HiP Cream Liner in Black, Subculture lip pencil, Politely Pink lipstick, Star Nova Lustreglass

Didn’t want to take out all the colors! (1-8) Carbon, Coppering, Mythology, Rule, Post Haste, Bisque, Hoppin’, Expensive Pink

OK…we can finally start…

Start with a clean, moisturized face. Apply Prep+Prime Skin. BE FRUGAL! It takes less than a full pump to do your whole face.

Next, shake your bottle of foundation so it makes a bubble of product at the top so you can sweep your 187 brush over it lightly. You really don’t need much when you apply it this way. Just a touch on the brush. Swirl it all over your face and finish with downward strokes around your cheeks and chin.

lovely…. haha

Next, dab whatever concealer you decide to use over blemishes and dark/discolored areas of the face. I like to tilt my head down and look upward into the mirror when concealing dark circles. It helps you see only the shady area you need to cover up, rather than goo-ing up your whole under-eye area.
like this…
Then, blend the product with the concealer brush.

Set everything with the blot powder and a powder brush.

Next, fill your brows however you like. I like to use the Define a Brow in the sparse areas and traced around the shape of my eyebrows. Use short strokes. I like to use the little comb to blend everything.

At this point, my lips start feelin’ kind of dry. So, I go ahead and apply my lip primer. This gives it plenty of time to dry too.

Next, take the kabuki brush and blend everything together really well, especially around your jawline.

Now you’re ready to start the eyes…
Take the Beige-ing SS and apply it all over your eyelid and brow bone.
Make sure you’ve traced a good outer shape and don’t go too far inward with it between the lid and brow. Trace the area where you want your eye shadow to go on the outer edges (make straight outer lines).

Apply your Pearl CCB on the brow bone only.

Next, take the white NYX pencil and fill in your lids only. This will make the colors look brighter.

Apply Coppering e/s with the 239 over the area shown.

Next, apply Mythology e/s to the un-shaded part of the lid.
It should look like this:

Now…for you Scotch Tape lovers….YOU DON’T need it!! You can easily make a defined “Jem-esque” outer edge with a 239 brush. I swear, you can.

HAHAHAHAHA!! I couldn’t resist…Damn, I loved Jem…

ANYWAY, Back to the tutorial…
Load up one side of your 239 brush with Post Haste e/s. Hold the outer tip of the brush against the outer edge of your shadow. Touch it once there and define it a little more by going back over it if you need to. Like this:

Next, add some more Post Haste to the tip of the brush and do the same thing along the crease, touching the line you just made. Like this:

Use some more Post Haste to fill in this outer area and VOILA!! You made an outer v. It should look like this:

Next, swirl the #34 brush in Rule e/s and apply right above and into the crease like this:
Swoosh it back and forth like a windshield wiper.

Now you should be lookin’ like this:

Flick the leftover shadow off the #34 brush and use it to apply Hoppin’ e/s to the brow bone up to the brows.

Now, use the same brush again to apply Expensive Pink e/s over the Rule, giving it a pretty shimmer. Like this:

Now, apply your black cream liner with a hard angle brush. Make sure to stop the liner where your outer eye shadow color stops. Also, follow the outer edge you made when making your “wing”. Like this:
Keep working until you have the shape and intensity you want.

Next, take your 219 brush and cover one side of it with Carbon e/s. Go over the line you made to soften it and make it look a little darker. Like this:

Now, take your flatter shading/blending brush and cover one side of it with Bisque e/s (or another that is similar to your skin tone). Line it up with the outer edge of color and use the color to define the outer line even more. Like this:

Now, apply your mascara and use the spoolie brush to remove any clumps and separate them a little. Also, apply a little to your lower lashes.
I have a rebel lash that likes to point straight downward for some reason…

Next, apply your bronzer with a big powder brush. Apply to your cheeks, nose, forehead, and a little on your chin. Blend it well.
Now use your 168, or any smaller slant brush to apply the darker half of the Sculpt and Shape powder. Apply the color right underneath your cheekbones and vertically on the sides of your nose. Like this:

Next, use a small powder brush to apply the lighter side of the powder (a highlighting powder) to the areas above your cheekbones, right above your eye brows, and vertically down the bridge of your nose. Like this:
(above your cheekbones)

Next, apply Cute powder blush to the apples of your cheeks with the 116 brush. Blend downward and outward in short strokes.

Almost finished! Apply your lipcolor. First, line lips with Subculture liner and follow with Politely Pink lipstick. Top it off with Star Nova Lustreglass.

Spray on some Fix+ and you’re on your way!

No name brand blending brush equivalent to MAC’s 227

Face:
Bare Escentuals Max Coverage Concealer Brush
Bare Escentuals Angled Contour Brush
Ulta’s Foundation Brush
Essence Of Beauty Powder Dome Brush
Essence Of Beauty Angled Blush Brush
182

My Routine:
I start with my face first about half way
Then do the eyes
Then lips
And then finally finish the rest of my face

After the shower – ugh!

Moisturize time! Apply all over face with clean sanitized hands:

Prep Face with face primer, I used the Monistat Chafing Gel:

I also mixed it with the Revlon’s Bronzing Lotion on the back of my hand to give me a nice sunkissed glow:

Mix it with the foundation brush on the back of my hand and apply it to the face with the brush as so:

You have a clear base to start with, now you are ready to proceed…

Apply SFC NC30 on problem areas and Vasanti Duo C under eyes:

Next is foundation, I use the STF in NC35 and apply it all over my face with my 182:

I then moisturize my lips with Fuchsia Fix Tinted Lip Moisturizer SPF 15:

Prep eyes with Painterly p/p all over entire lid, brow bone and underneath bottom lashline with 252 brush and blend:

Apply Gesso e/s in inner corner and half way on the lid with BE Foil brush (the safari looking one) Or you can use MAC’s 239. Using a patting motion, pack on the color, taking it right to the corner then to the bottom lashline about half way:

Before you apply the black shadow make sure you apply scotch tape at an angle from where your brow ends to the outer corner of your eye. Now use Carbon e/s and pack on the color on the other half of the lid. Its okay if it goes over the tape, its supposed to!

Now blend, blend and blend way! I took the 217 brush and blended carbon e/s in gesso e/s very lightly in a circular motion to get the desired effect.

Apply your highlight color, I used Ricepaper e/s here on my brow bone and blended it to get rid of the harsh line on top of the crease:

Now remove the tape, and wipe away or brush off the excess shadow that has fallen on the face. I used Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Wipe:

Curl lashes if needed, I am using my fav Ardell’s Heated Lash curler; apply mascara of your choice, I am using Too Faced Lash Injection; fill in brows, I used my VS brow pencil in brown and then brushed them across with my brow comb:

Apply lipstick – 3N; apply lipgloss – Bonus Beat:

Apply Falsies: I am using Sassi’s #600 with Duo Surgical Adhesive, bending it slightly so that it will stick on better and fit with my eye shape; I also wait a few secs before I put it on, that way its tacky and it won’t move around.

Now apply liner: I am using blacktrack f/l with my Ms. Makeup’s angled brush on the upper lash line with the angled tip in the inner corner for a precise line going half way on the lid; then I switch the angle so it is facing my outer corner and I start half way on the lid and move to the outer end. I then go over it with bootblack liquid liner; then I take smolder eye kohl and line my waterline and outer bottom corner about half way where gesso meets.

Now I finish the rest of my face: I applied Harmony Blush to contour my cheekbones making a ‘fishie face’ by starting at the top (at an angle) and then brushing it down to where my cheeks are hollow with my EOB dome blush brush; then blend in Sweetness Blush as my cheek color with my EOB angled brush:

Now the finishing touch! I applied my MSF in Medium Dark with my 182 all over my face; then I applied MSF Warmed on the apple of my cheeks, down the nose and on the forehead as a highlight:

Oh no I am not done just yet!

FIX+ BABYYYYYYY It sets the makeup and makes your skin look and feel FRESH!!!

Now let me take that hideous headband off my head and be normal again:

CCs, feedback, suggestions are all welcome! Its my first tut and I want to make my future tuts more enjoyable and better. So please, do not hesitate to fill me in on the what to do’s and dont’s. I hope everyone enjoyed it and now can replicate the ultimate KK look with an edge. Until next time folks, ciao!

Now you have a nice even base!!!

Now take the Studio Gear podwer or the highlight of your choice on the 224 …like so

apply to the brow bone for the purpose of highlightingment…

I put it all the way down to the crease area b/c it helps with blending later on so it looks like this..

Now use ur 219 to pick up some of the Gallant e/s (or any color really)

Now put it in the inner corner it doesn’t have to be perfect…it shall be fixed a little later

Ok…take the ooh….im assuming thats what it called since the duo is called ooh and aah…or it could be aah….the black side!! lmao

Now get some of the NARS night fever on ur 219 ….mine got crumbled like cookie bits

Put that on the outer V

Now blend but try to not blend it so much that it mixes in with the other shadows too much since they’re all black

Outer V should still be slightly defined…like so

Now close ur eye well not really close but kinda squint…then start to blend Gallant into the other shadows…getting a tiny bit of Gallant onto the 224 first may help…

Now he looks?? like this he looks?? haha im crazy hyper!!

Then take ur 219 and add some Night Fever to the lower lash line…u dont need to pull it down as much as i did b/c i ended up getting it inside my eye b/c of this….

Should look like this….like a black eye hahah…this too shall be repaired

Put Stila Smudge Pot of Fluidline on the Top and Bottom Lash and Water Lines with a liner brush

Now for peeps like me that like they’re liner dark…add Feline k/p on top of the other liner

It should now look like so..

Now for the funn part…..Pewterpink G/L!!!

Add it on top of the other liners…I didnt worry that it doesn’t shop up that much b/c i wanted it to be a sublte glittery effect

Now for the Mascara…

Now add concealer and put on foundation

And buff on the Natural MSF with a fluffy powder brush or a kabuki brush

Sweet as Cocoa Blush time!! i love this stuff

Now Take Global Glow…aka mister glitter chunks…grr….use Stippling Brush for this part or 187

Tutorial Contest Winner October 2007: weneedaroom

TrophyCongratulations to Specktra member weneedaroom for winning this month’s tutorial contest!!! Your votes decided she was the winner for this month. Weneedaroom will receive the prize of a $25 gift certificate to an online e-retailer, and a 4 month upgrade to a Premium Member subscription to Specktra.net.

Thank you so much, weneedaroom, for your tutorial, and to all who participated. We are greatly looking forward to next month’s entries!

You can check out weneedaroom’s winning tutorial here, or continue after the cut.

What you’ll need:
Your foundation/concealor of choice
Painterly paintpot (or any other base that matches your skintone)
Electra e/s
Violet pigment
Jeweltone e/s
Beautiful Iris e/s
Phloof e/s
Carbon e/s
Electrolady liquidlast liner
Posey blushcreme
Glissade MSF
Soar lipliner
Solar Plum l/s
Clear lipglass
Mascara
Brow color

Bare eye, no makeup.

Using either a brush or your finger, apply Painterly paintpot over your entire lid. This will be the base for our look and will help the colours pop and the eyeshadow to stay on forever

I like to use a sponge applicator for this part, and pat Electra on my lid. I think this allows for a lot of color payoff.

Now, take an eyeshadow blending brush, and sweeo some Violet pigment into your crease. Don’t worry about blending yet.

Now, with the same type of brush, sweep Jeweltone over Violet. This brightens up the look.

Now apply a TEENSY bit of Carbon (this stuff is dark, you don’t need to pack it on the brush or anything) into the corners of your eyes.

Use a tiny bit of Carbon on a brush to blend the purple and silver together like so.

Apply Beautiful Iris, a lighter purple, to the inner corners of your crease and blend to the middle.

Use Phloof, our highlight color, on your browbone and blend it into the purple shadow.

Sometimes, after doing my highlight, I notice my look looks less vibrant. So take just a tiny bit of Jeweltone and sweep and blend it lightly over the upper part of your crease. That should help brighten it up.

Liner time! I like doing a relatively thin line. Electrolady is a liquid liner, and it’s one of the sheerer ones in my opinion. I try to do it in one stroke, and then I go over it to make it more opaque. It should then look like the above picture.

Now the liner for the bottom lid. Open your eye as wide as you can and apply a teeny line under the in the very corners. Your lashes will probably get in the way, so it will be a bit sloppy.

That’s a bit neater! I used a Revlon makeup remover pen, but a q-tip dipped in makeup remover would work too. Just run it along the edge of the bottom liner to create a cleaner line.

Fill in your brows, curl lashes.

One coat of mascara.

Two coats! Intense eye looks call for heavy mascara.

Okay, now do your foundation routine. Make the obligitory stupid face.

Now, blush. I like to dot some Posey blushcreme on the apples of my cheeks and extended a bit. You don’t have to use this much, but I like bright cheeks.

Blend like crazy. Otherwise, you will look like a clown.

Now, using a blush brush, and using a circular motion on the apples of your cheeks, apply Glissade MSF.

Line and fill your lips with Soar lip pencil.

Next is Solar plum lipstick.

And a ton of sheer gloss
All done!!!

I am back from holiday and did a new tutorial yesterday. I some weeks made this Look some weeks ago and it didn´t want to get out of my mind. It is so simple, but looks gorgeous in my opinion. Teals are my favorites and I wanted to share it with you.

There are some steps, that you don´t need to make without loss. For exsample the “Sea Me” shadestick in the corner. It didn´t enhanced the result. Or you can use “Big T” only or better – “Pompous Blue” only. Ir even another shade, a purple maybe. The essence of this look is the “Carbon” eye shadow and a good base for a deep look.

So what do you need ca.:

Foundation, Powder etc. however you prefer.
A not too bright, bit sheer blush and maybe a powder for glow. “Lightscapade” should be very nice too.
One base matching the eyeshadow color you use. I chose “Delft” paintpot. It´s easier to apply than “Sea Me”.
A bright, mid-dark color – I took teal shades: “Big T” & “Pompous Blue”
And really important: a dark liner / pencil. For a smokey look a dark frame is a must have…

So let´s start with a clean and moisturized face. I started with eyes instead of foundation, as the dark shades make dirt below the eyes. If you prefer starting with make up, please apply a lot of face powder just below the eyes, so it can catch falling eye shadow powder.

So let´s base now. I don´t need any other base under paints and paint pots. If they are not good enough on your lid, please apply you favorite transparent base before. I took “Delft” paintpot only and applied it with a BENEFIT flat and small synthetic brush. I have seen, some gals use the 194 concealer brush by MAC for such a step too.

Start with the inner corner and apply the paint along the lash line. Then fill the main area of your lid. The most difficult step is to make a quite exsact border, a shape, that supports you own eye-brow-line. The easiest, to make this line clean and straight, is to apply from OUTER TO INNER corner of your eyes and to use your bone like a ruler.

The flash light detects every mark. That´s not too bad. If the lighter areas are not too extreme, you don´t need to care. The eye shadow will hide it. But if you feel more comfortable, give the paint some time to dry and apply a second layer. A good advice: to soften the harsh line, use the brush and go over the line some times.

But to soften it much more – and I made the expierence, that this is quite necessary to avoid, that the border shimmers through the blended teal eye shadow – we take some “Bare Canvas” Paint and blend it with the first millimeter of “Delft”. Also our highlighter will need a base, so we apply the paint up to the brows. For this step you can use your finger. For the blending take the same brush that you used for “Delft”.

It can be helpful, if you strech your skin a bit. The paints are easier to blend then. Sway the brush with small movements and don´t let the first paint wait to long. It becomes very hard to blend then.

I made a try: I applied some “Sea me” Shadestick into the inner corner – but it didn´t change the result very much, so you can leave it if you want. I just wanted to kepp this complete :-D

Next step are the powder eye shadows. For 2/3 of the lid from inner corner over the middle I used “Big T” with a 213 brush. Apply it over the whole “Delft”-area.

With the same brush I applied “Pompous Blue” in the outer 1/3 of the lid. The colors are very, very similar, especially on this base they look near the same. However, I like “PB” more. :-D If you use on of them alone for this look, it should not look quite the same way int he end.

With my flat daVinci brush, I made a not to thick line on the lower lid.

So now the essence of this look. The “Carbon” e/s. You can use “Black Tied” or other dark shades like “Shadowy Lady” or “Femme Noir” too, depending on the basic shade you take, but I think, no eye shadow will look so shadowy like the darkest and cleanest black. I used a round brush for this step. First make the shape and go along the gone or use your crease for orientation. I apply it just ABOVE the visible line of the crease. And than make some more layers. Make it as thick as you think it will suit you. My advice: start with the half width of your iris in the outer corner (including blending) and ca. a 1/3 of the iris in the highest point (usually ca. above your pupil) and make it thinner the more you go into the inner corner. If your eyes are quite narrow to each other, don´t apply “Carbon” to wide into the middle.

I chose a discreet highlighter for me, as very shimmery shades don´t suit me and I think the smokey look has to work for itself :-D I made it with “Vanilla” just below the brow. Hor blendling the harsh line and to connect highlighter with colors I took “Brule” – this is exsactly my skin tone. I use the 275 for this always. It´s quite fluffy because of the diagonal cut and its hair are quite robust, so youcan work very exsactle. Apply “Brule” ca. 1mm over the border to the teal to make it softer :-D

Now a nice, not to thick black line – I used “BlackTrack” with the 209. For both waterlines I used a graphite colored khol by agn©s b. Black is fine too, if you prefer. Mascara finalizes the eye work :-D

Now you can brush the dust under your eye away. Now I did my face – with mineral foundation and silk powder. That´s enough for me. I became bit tanned in holidays, so it is a bit too light for me now :-)

Now the cheeks. I used a soft pink with blue undertone: “Coygirl”. My highlighter for the cheeks was “Shy Angel” blush, that I applied at the cheekbones.

Brows and lips – the best choice is, to make the lips as nude as possible. For such a dark, smokey look it´s a MUST. I used C-THRU

And this is the result. I love the look… I hope you like it too and it´s easy enough to to follow for you :-D

my bare-naked face

mix tinted moisturizer with luminzer on the back of your hand (or wherever you like hehehe)

blend foundation into skin using 190 brush

oops, forgot to put on concealer! so here i am fixing that

i use my ring finger to blend concealer in a rolling motion

the result

set foundation & concealer with powder, in this case blot powder in medium dark

the result

time to fill in the brows. i use porcelaine/browning and my smashbox #12 brush. (please don’t mind my brows. i’m trying to grow them out so that i can get them shaped!)

apply udpp to the whole lid up to the brow

using the 239 brush, apply cornflower pigment to the tearduct and inner 1/3rd of the lid as shown. i like to pat on shadows onto my lid with the 239 brush.

the result

load 239 brush (after wiping it clean) with moon’s reflection e/s and apply to the middle of the lid, leaving 1/3rd of the outer lid free for the next shadow.

the result

clean off 239 brush again and pack on flashtrack e/s.

apply flashtrack e/s to the last outer 1/3rd of the lid. bring color up into crease as well by “pulling” shadow from the outer corner into the crease.

this is how it should look (or pretty similar)

using your blending brush, my 217 in this case, pack on a silver shadow. i’m using Idol Eyes from the Lure collection.

blend the shadows near the crease to even out the harsh lines. also i use this as my highlighter by applying the shadow up to my brow.

how it should look

using your 213 brush (in place of my 219 since i am waiting for it to arrive) pick up some deep truth e/s.

apply deep truth e/s to the outer v of the eye. blend well!!!!

how it should look

apply silverbleu shadestick to the lower lashline as a base for the shadow

apply moon’s reflection shadow to lower lashline with a smudge brush (i’m using a brush i got from a brush set in china)

does it kind of look like this?

using an angled liner brush (shiseido is what i’m using), pick up some nightfish fluidliner and line upper lid.

like so

use engraved powerpoint liner to line waterline

curl them lashes! i’m using my tarte curler which i love

apply mascara to bottom and top lashes

the result

apply falsies. i’m using ardell’s 131 lash.

using a contoured blush brush, apply other worldly blush to apples of cheeks and cheekbones

the result

apply hush hush tendertones lip balm to lips

the overall finished look!

PLACEMENT (roughly drawn)

black = cornflower pigment
blue = moon’s reflection e/s
pink = flashtrack e/s
green = deep truth e/s
silver = idol eyes e/s

Thanks for looking! Please leave thanks (if you want) or any feedback. I appreciate it y’all!
