  • Newcastles (UK) Dear Caroline weekly Q & A column featuring MAC cosmetics senior make-up artist, Caroline Donnelly, highlighted upcoming fall trends and how to achieve the seasons hottest look with MAC products. If you’re the fashionista who always stays ahead of the curve make sure to check it out, I’ve included the pertinent info below. (source)

Q. I’ve read a lot lately about matte skin being more in fashion this summer, but I still like a bit of a glow to my skin. How can I do this and still look up to date with my make up?

A. This season’s matte skin is not about a flat matte skin so you can still add texture and this will keep you looking right up to date. You’ll be pleased to know that with autumn approaching that texture is all important in this coming seasons make up trends too.

Be one step ahead and get practising now! This is all about considering carefully about where to place your products and playing textures off against each other.

For example, if you have a very metallic eye make up, have a more matte lip and in terms of skin, if you have a sheen on the cheekbones, have a barely there matte blusher and/ or a matte contour under the cheekbones. It’s not about wearing all your favourite products together, but keeping it controlled. There is a trend coming up for autumn/winter that has been inspired by painterly and photographic techniques, this can become dramatically shadowy Caravaggio-esque realism to spotlit, digitally superficial light distortions on the skin. In plainer terms, it’s about how light and dark hits the face. When highlighting or shading the face, push the boundaries and think of how you can use light, texture and shade in your make up to add complex complexion enhancements.

This coming season has quite an architectural approach to natural, it’s quite a built, highly dimensional face. For example, you could have a matte base using MAC Studio Fix Fluid, matte bronzer to contour and a high shine on the cheekbones, the cupids bow, the bridge of the nose and a little on the centre of the forehead and middle of the chin.

Keeping the rest of the skin matte with MAC Blot Powder will stop this from looking like you have oily skin. Many permanent line products will give you a great shine on the skin, try MAC’s Cream Colour Bases, suitable highlighting shades of Sheertone Shimmer blush. Be adventurous and try MAC frosted or Veluxe Pearl eyeshadows in appropriate colours, or, Iridescent loose powder.

In August MAC are launching the collection Flashtronic which features three fabulous Mineralize Skinfinish powders which MAC addicts go CRAZY for! These are incredibly beautiful and highlight the skin superbly, making it look like it’s jumped from the pages of an editorial.

The Skinfinishing powders are perfect for the look you want to achieve and used dry will add an fantastic glow.

Painterly, In3D on counters today

By Janice on August 2, 2007

PainterlyIN3D

Painterly and In3D color collections released today to US and Canadian counters.

Painterly collection follows close to its heritage, being inspired by and named after the Painterly style of art. Painterly is a style of painting marked by openness of form with shapes distinguished by color variations rather than outlines or contours. The promotional image for this collection (above) is highly depictive of this style of art with it’s inclusion of the obvious brushwork. The layering of the Technakhol liner and paint pots provide a bold but subtle medium for you to explore and proudly display your inner artist. We all know how closely fashion and cosmetics trends follow each other, many times cosmetic trends are taken directly from the runways of the hottest designers. With the colors in this collection, and taking your inspiration from painterly theme, you are sure to go into the Fall season at the forefront of this trend.

In 3D color collection is centered on two products, a new lipglass formula named 3D Glass and the brand new Lipglass Pencil. Swatches that have been contributed by members for the In 3D color collection are drool inducing. The juicy, ripe colors of the 3D Glasses are supremely wearable through every season, and the full complement of Lipglass Pencil shades ensure you’ll be able to find your perfect combination(s). 3D Glass is a lightweight translucent formula that includes aloe to soothe lips, while other ingredients ensure a mirror like finish and long lasting application. 3D Glass is packaged in a clear tube; with a brush applicator attached the cap.

The new Lipglass Pencil is formulated for a sheer application to be used with MAC Lipglass and Lipstick for a glossy effect. Glossy lip products aren’t known to be very long lasting, but MAC introduced specially formulated filming polymers for adherence, and luminosity in this pencil to ensure superior wearability. The best thing about this pencil is it provides a naturally defined lip which enables you to achieve a very sexy pout. To illustrate this, check out the luscious pout paula3boys achieved with Boundless 3D Glass and Red Stroke Lipglass Pencil.

————————————————
my bare-naked face

mix tinted moisturizer with luminzer on the back of your hand (or wherever you like hehehe)

blend foundation into skin using 190 brush

oops, forgot to put on concealer! so here i am fixing that

i use my ring finger to blend concealer in a rolling motion

the result

set foundation & concealer with powder, in this case blot powder in medium dark

the result

time to fill in the brows. i use porcelaine/browning and my smashbox #12 brush. (please don’t mind my brows. i’m trying to grow them out so that i can get them shaped!)

apply udpp to the whole lid up to the brow

using the 239 brush, apply cornflower pigment to the tearduct and inner 1/3rd of the lid as shown. i like to pat on shadows onto my lid with the 239 brush.

the result

load 239 brush (after wiping it clean) with moon’s reflection e/s and apply to the middle of the lid, leaving 1/3rd of the outer lid free for the next shadow.

the result

clean off 239 brush again and pack on flashtrack e/s.

apply flashtrack e/s to the last outer 1/3rd of the lid. bring color up into crease as well by “pulling” shadow from the outer corner into the crease.

this is how it should look (or pretty similar)

using your blending brush, my 217 in this case, pack on a silver shadow. i’m using Idol Eyes from the Lure collection.

blend the shadows near the crease to even out the harsh lines. also i use this as my highlighter by applying the shadow up to my brow.

how it should look

using your 213 brush (in place of my 219 since i am waiting for it to arrive) pick up some deep truth e/s.

apply deep truth e/s to the outer v of the eye. blend well!!!!

how it should look

apply silverbleu shadestick to the lower lashline as a base for the shadow

apply moon’s reflection shadow to lower lashline with a smudge brush (i’m using a brush i got from a brush set in china)

does it kind of look like this?

using an angled liner brush (shiseido is what i’m using), pick up some nightfish fluidliner and line upper lid.

like so

use engraved powerpoint liner to line waterline

curl them lashes! i’m using my tarte curler which i love

apply mascara to bottom and top lashes

the result

apply falsies. i’m using ardell’s 131 lash.

using a contoured blush brush, apply other worldly blush to apples of cheeks and cheekbones

the result

apply hush hush tendertones lip balm to lips

the overall finished look!

PLACEMENT (roughly drawn)

black = cornflower pigment
blue = moon’s reflection e/s
pink = flashtrack e/s
green = deep truth e/s
silver = idol eyes e/s

Thanks for looking! Please leave thanks (if you want) or any feedback. I appreciate it y’all!

32 New Flavors for Fall from MAC Cosmetics

By Janice on June 28, 2007

MAC Cosmetics will be introducing a welcome addition of 16 new permanent Matte eyeshadow shades to an already comprehensive lineup. The shadows are a brand spanking new Matte formula described here as soft, silky, and more “buttery” than the previous formulation. This is good to hear because who wants chalky, hard to apply, and even harder to blend matte shades? With a silkier application it seems we’re promised a high payoff, high intensity matte finish. Nothing can pull off a beautifully sophisticated eye like a Matte, add a little sparkle and shine with a highlight of Veluxe Pearl and things get exciting. ;)

lah_knee informs of more welcome news, another brand new product for your luscious lips. Mattene will bring 16 limited edition shades for the lips to us in the Fall of ’07 (most likely in the same collection as Matte2). Mattene’s will be packaged in the same chic tube as SlimShines. April brought us the wildy popular SlimShines, which are rumored to have done so well they are being considered for permanent status in the lineup. Now Fall will be bringing us Mattene’s, MAC is really exploring it’s (and your) options for gorgeous lips.

The PRO line has had special attention paid to it as well. Earlier this month there was a line extension of 13 new eyeshadows, 11 powder blushes, and several new amplified lipsticks. More PRO shadows have been hinted as coming in the second half of the year. There has been additional information floating around of new PRO shades of Reflects Glitters, a new products called Lip Erasers, and sculpting/contouring powders.

Swatches of the new Matte2 shades are coming soon, count on us to keep you updated!
