Blogging from Glam’s Writer Den

By Janice on September 5, 2008

Hello lovely SBN readers, I’ve made the trip up to New York City to attend a few of the Spring/Summer 2009 shows where I will (hopefully) have enough access behind the scenes to bring you information on what’s hot for the season in beauty. I’ve scheduled interviews and will be backstage with your favorite cosmetic lines and plan on sharing this content with you via images, videos and blog entries over the weekend.

Right now I am hanging out in the Glam sponsored Writers Den where Glam Publishers can hang out and work between shows and even get a quick manicure or pedicure. I just had a manicure so I don’t have to worry about keeping my nails looking fresh this weekend. Right now there are a ton of beautiful people in the room representing the Glam team and several Glam publishers. As a small town gal in a sophisticated uptown crowd the experience is intoxicating, but I think that should probably be attributed to the Champagne and other adult treats in the room. ;)

For my first time to New York I think that I’m doing well, this city can be intimidating but armed with my trusty BlackBerry and Google Maps I’m ready to be your fearless leader through the beauty of Fashion Week!

Note – If you have an aspect of Fashion Week you would particularly like to hear about please feel free to leave me a comment or send me an email! This trip is all about you and bringing you relevant information from S/S ’09.

Ciao Bellas!

What’s the right age?

By Shimmer on June 19, 2008

This is completely unrelated to the article. It’s just a picture of me super exhausted at the gym last night. Glamorous, yes?

We’ve talked about it in the forums before, we’ve talked about it amongst ourselves privately, and we were going to talk about it on Glam Soup one day…

What’s the right age to let the girls start wearing makeup? I confess, I’ve got an 11 year old daughter (soon to be 12!!) and I let her wear makeup. Not much, just a little.  Some people have told me it’s ridiculous, some people have told me it’s okay, some people have told me I should be ashamed of myself (heh. Of all the things I’ve done in my life to be ashamed of, that’s NOT the icing on the cake, mkay?), and some have told me I’m doing a reasonable job of being an aware mom.

I like to be a moderate on this subject, frankly.  She can wear makeup, but I get to choose it, and if I feel it’s too heavy, she’s got to tone it down or she loses the privilege completely.  No eyeliner yet, no heavily pigmented lipsticks, no smokey eyes, things of that nature.  She agrees, and generally she’ll stick to lipgloss and maybe (if there’s a recital or something at school that day) a swipe of mascara.

My decision had more to do with me wanting to let her evolve naturally into her own person than anything else. I don’t believe in living vicariously through my children, and I want her to have her childhood.  At the same time, she has taken an active interest in cosmetics (really, is that surprising? Anyone?) and I want her to be able to wear makeup right and not look foolish when she’s 15 or 16 years old.   I don’t want her to be “that girl” at the mall, with her over straightened hair, super thick black eyeliner, too dark foundation, too pale pink lips, and spidery mascara.  I don’t want her to be the “rainbow girl” either, who discovers makeup and decides to wear the equivalent of a bag of skittles smeared all over her face everyday.  I want her to look at makeup and cosmetics and see the potential for playing up her beautiful eyes and gorgeous lashes, and maybe for a day, look like someone else. I don’t want her to look at makeup as a way of hiding from the world.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a handbook when she or her brothers were born, so I have on idea if I’m doing this whole ‘mommy’ thing right, I can only gauge my progress based on the character of the children as they grow up. So far, looks like all systems are go, but I recognize that can change in the blink of an eye.

What about you? When did you start wearing makeup? When did, or will, you allow your daughter to wear makeup? Will there be limitations placed on the privilege? Do you even consider it a privilege, or do you consider it a right of a teenaged girl? Is it a rite of passage into womanhood?

Talk to me people!
