It is indeed scary how little she knows what she's talking about.

What she described happening to her is most probably a simple case of contact dermatitis due to one of the ingredients in a hair product she was using. She has never identified clinically which ingredient was the cause and as such it may not even be among those she talks about on the "Toxic Twelve List" (see below)

The thing that all these scare articles have in common is that they are written by people who haven't got the most basic understanding of science and can't interpret a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

I can't write a long critique now but when I'm back later I'll look at debunking some of the hysteria in these reports from a verifiable scientific viewpoint.

Just as a very quick example, the link given by the OP talks about the "Toxic Twelve List" - well this list includes urea which is produced naturally by the body anyway. Formaldehyde, which is on the list, is produced in small quantities when you bake bread - even organic bread with no artificial ingredients.

The list also describes the substances listed as "carcionogenic" - well that's completely untrue for many and shows that the writer doesn't even understand what carcinogenic means.

Sometimes too much information can be bad, people. Especially when information is misinterpreted, used out of context, etc. It can lead to hype, panic, and more misinformation being spread, in which case everyone loses. It really is a pet peeve for me since I have to deal with it frequently in my job.

That's a little extreme in my book. If a reliable, scientific source tells me it's "toxic" based on research and scientific knowlege, then I pay attention.

I am personally allergic to octinoxate, a very common ingredient used as a form of sun protection. It makes my skin very itchy and peel. When applied to my lips (lip balms), my lips will itch, form a very thick layer of dry skin, and excrete puss. Just because I'm allergic to it, I wouldn't call it "toxic" considering so many people use products with this ingredient with no problems. I just have to be careful with products that have an "SPF".

I think people need to be aware of the difference between being allergic to something and it being toxic. Some people die from peanuts... You know what I consider "toxic"? Um... mercury.

I haven't watched the video. I can't find it through the link provided, but I can't take a pageant contestant seriously when it comes to this topic unless she moved on to be a scientist or something...

Quite a tour schedule for Ms. 1997 America!! Maybe if she was a dermatologist I may put a little more substance in her claims. Some people are just incredibly sensitive to certain ingredients, that doesn't make them toxic for everybody.

I find it interesting that the video did not touch on the actual products that made her skin react in such a way in conjunction with the fact this was concluded after a visit to her holistic doctor. I find Holistic medicine very shady myself so I won’t put all my eggs in this basket until I actually start to melt. Have you heard the one where breathing the air outside causes cancer? Yeah, we’re all doomed. Damn!

im not going to stop using mac it has the lowest rate for cancer scare and the fact that cigaretts has cancer but no one removes that off the market is just wronge .

What problem? Just because someone says it's a problem, doesn't mean it is. There are safe exposure limits for metals like lead which have been determined over the years as a result of epidemiological studies.

Lead was removed from petrol (gasoline) because there was evidence it was harmful to children's brain development although the risk of low doses on adult brains has not been established. [Link]

The levels of lead found in reputable cosmetic brands are very low and can be described as "trace" rather than significant. Fakes coming out of places like China may well have dangerously high lead levels though.

I don't think there is even the slightest evidence that lead in reputable cosmetics below the currently published limits is going to have a harmful effect on anyone. Do remember that there seems to be much more risk of lead harm to developing brains rather than adult ones so anyone who is really terrified of lead should ensure that their children don't use cosmetics.

The world is not full of evil scientists trying to work out how they can expose consumers to yet more dangerous chemicals. Far from it. Cosmetics development at the major companies is highly scientific and the top priority is consumer safety.

No matter how much safety testing is done though, certain individuals will always be allergic to certain ingredients. Ingredients which have no adverse effect on 999 out of a thousand people. Well some people are allergic to eggs, wheat, milk, pollen or peanuts. These are all natural ingredients which for the vast majority of people can be eaten safely as part of a wholesome diet.

Just because one person has a bad reaction to a cosmetic product doesn't mean that product is dangerous, carcinogenic or toxic yet that's what Miss America is effectively suggesting.

She does not give a single credible scientific reference for any of her allegations. Not one.

oddly enugh i talked to a skin doctor "dermatologist " about this it was random becouse he was in the mall and i over heard him talking to another person about her skin i was being noisy xD lol
but i asked him "is the lead in makeup safe to use "and he said what you said about it being safe and so on ,
but he was on point with what you said .

thats why i came back here to update my post but then i see your posted the info .
so now i can use my makeup worry free agin

I was ready to start staining my lips with vinegar or fruit instead of using makeup... Ok, not that ready due to the high expectations our US society places on women to look nice.

Nearly everything we consume and use, with the exception of the natural products, is toxin infested. But rather than go dig and do your homework, let's all just sit back and accept the status quo. Through my own personal experience and experts of the natural remedies, we keep away from toxin infested food and cosmetics. So, really its a very ignorant thing to dis Miss America or anyone else out there exposing truth until you do your homework!!  

 

Yep. Totally. One person is allergic to one ingredient in one product, so let's take all the makeup out back and burn it! That makes sense!

Safe Cosmetics is biased against certain ingredients (mainly against some of the usual suspects -- i.e., parabens, SLS, mineral oil, others), as is -- I believe -- the Cosmetics Database. I wouldn't put much stock in them. If MAC's makeup products really did have a bunch of "killer" ingredients or whatever, I daresay most of us would be long dead by now.

On the other hand, I strongly recommend the website Personal Care Truth or Scare. It's maintained by people who have actually worked in the cosmetics industry and know what they're talking about. cosmeticsinfo.org is also a good site.

And a belated round of applause to MAC_Whore for the Snopes link regarding lead in lipsticks.

You don't think that people affiliated with the cosmetics industry have a conflict of interest and want to sell/promote their products?

 

I think the Cosmetics Database is good, you just have to decide for yourself what amount/level of chemicals and hazards you are comfortable with.  Also, keep in mind the amount you are using and where.  I feel fortunate sometimes because my allergies are so intense.  So, I use to react to products, then check and see and exhaustive chemical ingredient list; now, I check the list first and identify toxic products first.  An example of this is Benetint.  I thought the whole line was simple, minimal easy-breezy which I translated in my head to mean close to natural. But I reacted violently to it and returned it (this was years ago).  Recently the Toronto Sun printed an article where they reported that heavy metals were detected in Benetint including: arsenic, cadmium, lead, nickel, beryllium, thallium and selenium.

The authors at Personal Care Truth don't promote any products, not even ones they've worked on or have created themselves. They simply present facts about ingredients in cosmetics based on scientific evidence. Nothing more.
