88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

Ok, so I'm probably an anonomly here in that I haven't quite been completely convinced of the wondrousness that is supposedly the 88 and 120 Palettes etc... you see them so prevalent on here along with other make-up forums and being touted by online make-up gurus as being the next big thing..!

Am I interested? Hells yeah! I want to see what all the hype is about, and hey, if it turns out that they're unpigmented, chalky crap, then lesson learned and not a very expensive one at that either..

The main niggling feeling I have with these is that (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!) they don't appear to come from any well established, regulated company that has strong quality controls. From what I've seen it's very hard to find out what company are making them and they don't come with any ingredients lists?

Ok, so they're made in China - no problems there - hell, half of my wardrobe, household and electrical items were probably manufactured there and there's no problems there, so please don't think this is a "made in China" rant as it honestly isn't.

Buuuut.... yes, there's always a but isn't there! I can't help but have niggling concerns what with all these cases of toxic lead levels in everything from baby formula to childrens toys to toothpaste found in products originating from China.

And of course reading post after post on here how, copyright and intellectual infringement aside, to stay away from fake MAC products because only Lord knows what's in them, they could be toxic, harmful to us, who knows the consequences in the long run etc...

Hell, I even remember one member advising people not to even dare swatch any fake MAC pigment on the back of their and if they did to wash it off completely that it could *potentially* be that dangerous. Yeah, that gave me the heebeejeebies..

Ok, I'm rambling now... however my point is most of us have been "trained" to stay clear of counterfeit products, because rightly so they could *potentially* be harmful to us. However when it comes to these un-named palettes coming from God knows where, with God knows what in them it's OK... why, because they're not counterfeits of any well known brand name?

Now I'm not out to give these palettes a bad rep or anything (I mean I want one or two of them I'm just a little apprehensive about buying them atm til I find out more about them...) but I've even read reviews on MUA where people give them top marks - and yet in their review compain about getting "severe itching and burning sensations and horrible eye sensitivity" after using them.. and you're giving your review 5 lippies for that, wtf?!

A close family member of mine is completely blind in both eyes so I guess I'm perhaps a little more sensitive about this issue than others. I love make-up and all, but you know what I love my vision even better.

Do I have any right to be concerned about these palettes or am I seriously getting OTT here?

Part of me thinks "jeez, so many people are buying them and loving them they can't all be wrong!" but then the other part of me is still wary and dubious about the whole thing..

As I said, I'm no expert in all of this, they could of course be perfectly fine and if so, great! I look forward to getting one or two of the palettes then in that case. Or does anyone else feel that my concerns are valid and perhaps feel the same way?

Btw...

i own both 88 palettes so i really wanted to se it. anyway, i don't use them as much as i thought i would. either cos i'm not creative enough or cos i love my mac eyeshadows way way more. i haven't had any problem with them burning my eyelids or anything though, and i have pretty sensitive eyes. well actually i think the first time i used them my eyes felt kind of funny, but that was only the first time and it could have been from something else.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

Well it's important to note that the palettes are not fakes of anything, nor are they trying to emulate or replicate any brand's products. As I know you already realize, being made in China does not mean that they're fake either. The reason for why they're so cheap is because they're mass-produced from China and aren't branded at all (until web-stores like Coastal Scents come in and take it upon themselves to brand them) - and they might be of lesser quality (debatable?).

It's also fair to say that not being fake doesn't necessarily mean that they're safe to use - where the "itching" comes in. But personally I think that the "itching" experienced has little to nothing to do with being made in China and/or being so cheap. For one thing, people have allergic reactions to even the most expensive products made by the most reputable companies on the market. And for another, the reactions could be totally psychological, i.e. someone thinks that the product is cheap and could very realistically be imagining the itching.

You can check out the ingredients used in the palettes on both the Coastal Scents website and off independent sellers on eBay. According to CS (for the regular 88 palette):
Quote:
Ingredients: Talc, Mica, Mineral Oil, Kaolin, Titanium Dioxide, Magnesium Stearate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Lanolin, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

May contain: Mica and titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Ultramarine Blue, Manganese Violet, Ferric Ammonium ferrocyanide, Chrome Oxide Green, Hydrated Chrome Oxide Green. FD&C Red #40/ak Kajem /fd&/c Tekkiw #5 Al Lake, FD&C Blue #1 Al Lake
I did a quick Google of all the ingredients and none of them individually are harmful. All of them have cosmetic uses.

I am no expert in this area, but I think it's safe to say that these palettes present no immediate harm and are safe to use. While being wary is sometimes a good thing, it's a good idea to do some research and exercise critical thinking when making judgments.

I own the two 88 and 28 palettes and I too use at least one of them about once or twice a week and had no reactions to them.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

i have the 28 palette and the 56 palette one from CS. I only used the 28 palette so far and it's superb quality and doesn't irritate my eyes at all. i understand your concern but it should be okay. i was a bit skeptical about the ingredients and if i was safe but i think u should just make sure you aren't allergic to any of the items listed in the ingredients and you should be fine.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

i have VERY sensitive eyelids and i have used the 88 shimmer palette once or twice and i gotta say that it didnt hurt or burn my eyes. but to be honest i felt a lot more comfortable using my mac eyeshadows instead, but its just a personal preference.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

I can only offer my experience on the 120color palette.

I have not had any bad reaction to it, no itching, no redness, swelling, etc and my lids are pretty sensitive. But I also don't use it everyday and use an eyeshadow base. It actually lists the ingredients in the box, I can post them if you want, just let me know

The quality: pigmentation-wise, it's great! some shadows are more pigmented than others, I haven't used many colors (I'm more of a neutral-eyeshadow kind of girl), the matt purples seem to be the ones with the least color payoff, from what I've tried. They blend really well, but some of them are incredibly soft, as in, you dip your brush and you pick up a lot of product. They also shatter easily because of that.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

I have super-sensitive eyes and skin, never had a problem with any of my CS palettes. I have both 88 palettes, the contour palette and the neutrals palette. A lot of people use CS makeup, and I don't think anyone has died or lost an eye from the product

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

Thanks for posting about the Coastal Scents Controversy!
I been hearing that their products are very unsafe. I also heard that they may contain lead. I really hope that is not true. A lot of China makeup has been found to have lead. I been hearing this about Coastal Scent eye makeup.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

i have the manly 120 palettes, 26 and 28 palettes from CS.
and IMHO these palettes are great.
i use tfsi base everytime, and i use the 26 and 28 neutral palettes almost everyday.
120 manly has a crazy color pay off, every colour is so vibrant.
some could be a bit chalky. but i can live with that.
its not that i dont care about the warnings.
but if people in china makes such dangerous makeup, we wudve heard it on the news, as before the makeup do bad things to us, if its true, it wudve done the damage in china first. on A LOT of girls.
girls in china wears makeup too.

i might be wrong. this is just what i think about the whole thing

makeup should be all fun

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

I guess what confuses me here is that although there is a general mistrust of the fake MAC 120 Palettes being sold on E-Bay for safety reasons, there still seems to be an acceptance of the Coastal/Manly 120 Palettes which are the same exact product.

If you compare the two (the MAC and all other 120 Palettes out there, Manly and BHCosmetics and Coastal products) you will see that it is the same Chinese manufacturer. So if you are going to avoid the Fake Mac, I would assume you would avoid the anonymous 120 Palette as well, regardless of the faux brand name they attach to it.

I am not judging anyone for getting this Palette, I want it also, but it is worrisome that it is being so mass produced with any joe shmoe attaching their own brand name on it as if it is their own unique product with quality control involved.

I wonder, has there been any tests for lead levels in these palettes? I may be wrong, but I believe that I saw a documentary once about there not being a requirement that cosmetic companies list lead levels, at least that is true here in USA and most certainly that is true in China.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

I only use mine occasionally and I've been fine. And I have pretty sensitive skin. I think the products they use is often found in stuff like Rimmel, Revlon, Loreal, etc.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

I have the 88 palette in neutral or warm its not coastal scents. it has Fraulein printed on the box. I bought it from ebay and I will be getting the new metal palette too.

I have used my neutral palette a few times and have had no issue with skin irritation.

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

The reason why it seems like a lot of companies sell the same products except with a different label is because they order it from the same manufacturer. (e.g. 88/120 palette from BH vs Coastal Scents)

So all the materials are the same from company to company =)

Re: 88 Palettes, 120 Palettes etc... Are they safe to use??

The funny thing about these palettes is that everyone can say I use them and I'm alive or I'm not blind BUT I think the warnings might be aimed towards LONG term affects which might be scary if indeed they have lead or something else dangerous in them, another couple of things someone made a good point though that if they were dangerous it may have already done some damage to the people in china making these and are actually exposed to the ingrediennts hours on end everyday, and now my personal input with these palettes I have almost ALL the palettes you name it, concealer, foundation, blush, eyeshadows, lip palettes etc. and i noticed that with the 88 eyeshadows when I am experimenting with them and I have been smelling them for a while, my nose does tend to burn or hurt my sinuses a bit but I don't know if it's just that, because I have sinuses and seasonal allergies, as far as my actual eyes, I haven't had any reactions.

I totally agree with the above two comments. Ppl may say they're not blind/dead yet, but there could be something far more serious going on underneath -- long-term effects from excessive lead or cadmium found in low-quality makeup. That is what worries people. Lead and cadmium can lead to long-term problems such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease, just to name a few. Not to mention the long-term problems that can occur in children who are born to mothers who had excessive lead in their bodies while pregnant…

I recently ordered a 120 Manly Palette on Ebay ebay.gif Yet now after researching online about fake makeup and lead (and the other crazy things that could be in there), I must admit that I’m concerned. I hope I don't receive the palette and can just get a full refund :/ *sigh* Or hopefully it'll be broken so that I can just get a full (or at least a partial) refund, and then throw it away. I don't wanna bother wearing something that I'm not sure about.

I'm not sure about these palettes because even though the exact same palette is sold with some "cool brand name" (ie. Coastal Scents or BH), the basic Manly palette is still from the same manufacturer as the "brand name" ones, as previously mentioned in others’ comments. I have heard of no scientific tests or scientific research to prove the safety of these palettes, and simply bcuz ppl mention they are not dead yet, that does not convince me of the long-term safety of these palettes.

Although the women in China may seem to be doing alright,  that doesn't necessarily satisfy my underlying concern: how do we really know everything is fine? Take for example the beautiful country Burma/Myanmar. Now, I know that every country is different, and I am not attempting to make sweeping generalizations across all of Asia. That’s not my point. I will simply tell you what I know to be occurring in Burma these days so as to share what's going on in the world. Sometimes people (particularly the street vendors) add plastic bottles in their frying oil to make sure the tempura breading on their food is extra crispy and that it stays crispy longer.  eeksign.gif  I know this cuz much of my extended family is from there. No, it doesn't make the food taste funny -- there is no sign to readily alert the buyer of what they're really eating. I'm not trying to dissuade tourism to Burma, lol; I'm just making a realistic example for reference as to why I'm still concerned.  The people who eat this stuff aren't dead yet either, and there isn't any news saying that massive amounts of people (or even just 1 person) are dying from this. So, what does that tell me?  It just makes me more concerned that who knows what's in stuff these days when people are not required to say everything that's inside of something. The news doesn't cover everything equally. They could do a story on the safety of Manly palettes, but as of now all is silent in the news...*sigh*

I wish I could see hard facts -- real data that proves they are safe. Ingredient lists aren't quite satisfactory (although it’s a good start) either, in my opinion, as they aren't required to list every single thing in them, as Sylvanring mentioned.

I appreciate everyone's input into this thread thus far, yet I'm still hoping to see some proven research. I hope that it will come out some day soon shrugs I appreciated the research one Yahoo! Answers user did. I copied and pasted their information below. From info they sayt that they took directly from the Coastal Scents website, they note the exact amount of lead said to be contained in these palettes. Their answer is found under the heading Are coastal scents eye shadow palettes safe since it is distributed in the US ?”,which is found below, posted underneath this reply/comment. Hopefully the info they give will be useful to you, too.

At any rate, just to quell my own concerns, from now on I'm just gonna buy things from places I know and love, such as Mac, Sephora, Clinique, or even decent drugstore brands, etc...places with real stores that I can go and buy directly from, as opposed to online – although it is quite frustrating when I want something that’s not readily available in my area!! hmm.gif What’s a gal to do. At any rate, everyone makes their own decisions, and I guess after all our researching all we can do is make the decision we feel is best for our own bodies.

Such  a long post, I know…thanks for taking the time to read or even just skim it type.gif

Fyi, Yahoo! Answers has some interesting threads on this very topic, and many ppl have commented. Here are a few user comments that I found particularly enlightening, keeping in mind that these are their own comments based on their own research, not mine. I'm just relaying some interesting things I've been reading…

Are coastal scents eye shadow palettes safe since it is distributed in the US ?

I know coastal scents are made in China, and I know China has a bad rep for producing hazardous products. Coastal scents is made by the same company as Manly, Beauties Factory, BH cosmetics and now I see the a new brand on amazon is selling an exact version of the 120 eyeshadow palettes under the name Shany. Some of the companies I named are American companies that stamp their names on these products and sell them here. What I am confused about is... if products are made in China (or any other country) aren't they still required to meet FDA regulations if they are sold and distributed in the US?

Additional Details

I have the Manly 120 palette and I have used it once. I must say I love the colors and it stays on well. I am concerned about lead and other poisons. Bh cosmetics, and Shany ( exclusively sold on amazon) sells the exact same palette. I'm wondering if I would be safer ditching the Manly brand since it is not sold in the us and going with an American brand like Coastal scents, BH cosmetics and shany even though that were made in the same factory. I don't know if American companies test products that were made somewhere else before selling them.

Ok. I think I just answered my own question. I went to coastal scents website and I saw their "safety report". One tested for lead and the max is 10 ppm. The report was <10ppm. Most reports usually state the exact number. That was just one potential hazard. I have a small child and I am concerned about her health as well . So I don't think I will use.

On another note, I bought Manly off ebay and the lead report online was 1.7ppm. Don't know if it is safe to use, so I won't.

Many products that are sold in drug stores and online are made in China. I believe that a lot of "US" brands that are made in China are safe because they have to follow US rules/laws, by not containing ingredients that are harmful to people, such as lead, or things that may come from animals (whale blubber, animal placenta, etc). I know that lead was used because it will give out brighter colors, but the US found it unsafe and outlawed to have it used to make anything that can be transmitted to our bodies such as makeup.

Thing on EBay are not regulated, such as companies like Coastal Scents which is based in Florida (so it's shocking to here that they have lead in it). There palettes are made in China, but I would think that they would be caution from getting their supplies from a supplier who uses lead or any unsafe products. If they were they would have a chance to be fined, or worse case sued (they wouldnt be sued if they actually did state that their product contains lead).

If you’re buying products that are not well known in the states, or that are well known in China, just educated yourself on what exactly they use to make the makeup. Here is a clue to know if the product you’re buying is sake- the Ingredients should be listed on All Products. If the ingredients are not displayed then that should raise a red flag.

Beware of counterfeit makeup, like discounted high end "knock off" claimed to be the real deal MAC, Chanel, Nars, Smashbox etc.

I would never trust places that claim that you can buy make wholesale or discounted, majority of them are FAKE or may be very old products. Trust me your would be scared to know what in counterfeit cosmetics, such as lead, animal urine, paint thinners and so on.

I know that people rather save money, but its better be safe than sorry, so spend the money or the “real” product than go cheap and buy fake.

So Read the Label, read the ingredients. Knowing that your palette has lead in it, I would just beware, because this is something that your putting on your skin, and will be on throughout the day Just imagine how many applications of it you’ll be using, would you think it’s safe?.

Are the Coastal Scents eyeshadow palettes safe?

I've been hearing bad things about Coastal Scents and what they put in their products.
I just wanted to know if anyone has any information about it or if they've had any bad experiences with the palettes?

Additional Details

For the people who wanted to know; I've heard people say there was lead in it or you could get Silicosis from their products.
Like I said, I'm not sure at all, I actually didn't do very much research.
But I'm sure the eye palettes are fine. I'm just not touching any other product.

Honestly, **STAY AWAY** from Coastal Scents if you care anything about your OWN health and safety... read this:

** COASTAL SCENTS DOES NOT MANUFACTURE THEIR PRODUCTS ** they are all purchased from China, Thailand, Japan... all the Asian countries which cost them less to sell it --- and us U.S. consumers know it's no lie that these Asian producers have lower standards and I mean, you saw all that garbage happen with poisonous PLASTIC DYES AND INKS --- I wouldn't ever buy them! Why risk that?

I have heard GREAT things about color --- but honestly, the palette isn't expensive, so there HAS to be so much TALC inside of it to make it that cheap --- you are getting what you pay for, absolutely.

Click the link here if you don't believe me that they buy EVERYTHING from Asian markets and re-sell it without doing ANYTHING to it:
http://www.alibaba.com/product/charmei-1…

*Made in CHINA* --- the same exact product.

Seriously, stay away and WARN OTHERS.

Are the coastal scents products safe?

I wanted to get the coastal scents 88 shimmer palette but then I read somewhere that it was dangerous or something? Is that true? Please help

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Even the coastal scents website has a disclaimer. they get their products manufactured in china so they have had lead problems in the past.

it's also talc based and contains other ingredients that aren't good for you. If you are worried then you should also avoid products that have parabens because it's been linked to breast cancer.

just like how smoking doesn't always lead to lung cancer, using makeup with parabens or talc won't always lead to breast cancer or lung problems. However, it's a risk that is up to you entirely.

Coastal scents is cheap but personally I don't find the risk worth it. My vanity is definitely not worth it.

I was watching a youtube video that reviewed the cs 88 eyeshadow palette and in the comments there was a user who said that there was lead in the ingredients which causes cancer.

Is this true? If it is, is there any proof about there being lead in the eyeshadows?

Coastal Scents makes you agree to a statement when you go through checkout. This agreement states: "...You understand that the person who orders on our website is the person responsible for the outcome of any products created with our products as well as for the proper usage and storage of those products. Many of our products can be hazardous and/or fatal if ingested or if they come in contact with the skin or the eyes..."

The last sentence shocks me. I've ordered tons of skincare and cosmetics online and never seen anything like that before.

If you don't believe me, go to their website, pick a product, add it to your bag, and click on checkout. The agreement will pop up. Read it carefully. The portion I excerpted is about half way down the window of text.

Remember it's not just these large palettes that are made in China, but also Wet n Wild and NYX products.  Personally I don't have a problem with it, and I find the quality of some WnW and NYX products to be on par with and often times better than MAC.  That one Yahoo comment about a palette being poor quality because it's cheap and has talc in it is hilarious, as tons of powder makeup (extremely high end included) has talc in the first few listed ingredients.  I think the average (read: the not obsessed with makeup) person assumes that high end brands have something "special" in their cosmetics that make them worth the big price tag, when it's really the more unique shades and (perhaps mostly) the branding.  So many things are made in China, including most clothing and other things that continuously touch your skin, I'm not really hugely perturbed about something extremely sinister hiding in my makeup.

It is true that there are a great many products that are manufactured in China. As the originator of this thread stated:

Quote:
Ok, so they're made in China - no problems there - hell, half of my wardrobe, household and electrical items were probably manufactured there and there's no problems there, so please don't think this is a "made in China" rant as it honestly isn't

It is completely true iagree.gif that we don’t have to be worried about “sinister” things hiding in all products coming from China. As mentioned in another person's review, many makeup brands, including NYX and Wet 'n Wild, are also manufactured in China. Really, it is impossible, and quite unnecessary, to cover in one thread/forum the safety of all makeup products manufactured in China. That is why we appreciate threads like this, which keep the topic specific: Coastal Scents palettes.

Knowledge is powerful. It enables us to make informed decisions. Different people may make very different decisions based on the same information. To each his own.

Ppl can debate the dangerousness of talc, but that’s not really my personal concern. My concern is the more obviously unhealthy ingredients, specifically lead, cadmium, and other known-to-be-unhealthy chemicals. Also, the Yahoo! comment that stated “U.S. consumers know it's no lie that these Asian producers have lower standards and I mean, you saw all that garbage happen with poisonous PLASTIC DYES AND INKS --- I wouldn't ever buy them!” could have been better written and better thought-out. It seems to generalize all “Asian producers” and place them in a negative light, which is unfair. Perhaps a more reasonable statement would be that, while the majority of the products originating in China seem to be very healthy and good quality, it is wise to consider the fact that there have, in the past, been some manufacturers in China that have had poisonous toxins placed in their products. Thus, it is prudence on one’s part to be aware that such could be happening at present, or could occur again the future.

Generalizations can be deceiving. When reading pplz reviews, you can find that many “feel” that these palettes are fine bcuz they themselves use them and they feel fine. Or you may find that they “think” it should be fine because there are many things that are “made in China” that are good quality. It is great to know that many ppl use these palettes and they are doing well thus far, yet let us keep in mind that it is the long-term effects that many worry about. As well, even though it is true that many good quality things are manufactured in China, it is wise to keep in mind that this is not always the case with all products manufactured in China. Generalizations can tend to leave out specific details.

Staying on the specific topic of Coastal Scents palettes, back2topic.gif it is valuable to hear someone's comment that states that they "bought Manly off ebay and the lead report online was 1.7ppm.” and “Even the coastal scents website has a disclaimer. they get their products manufactured in china so they have had lead problems in the past.” Although these are not my own personal comments, I do appreciate other pplz research. Of course, take everything with a grain of salt: none of us really know who wrote such comments and where they really got their info from. Regardless, I suppose we all visit threads and forums like these to read what others have posted, and we can do 1 of 3 things with the info we find: (1) do further research, such as finding out if 1.7ppm is safe or harmful (2) we can simply take the information at face value and let our personal conscience direct us (3) or leave/disregard what we find.

Everyone has the freedom of choice to decide what they want to do with the information they find on this topic. In any case, being as informed as reasonably possible on this topic is airing on the side of prudence. I truly hope that these palettes are 100% safe :) I would love to use them! Hi guys.... Joined after I stumbled upon this and decided to tell you guys my experience. I got the 120 palette from ebay for about 20something dollars including shipping after alot of youtube and online research that verified my predictio on that the ebay ones are the same exact palettes as BH and Coastal Scents. FYI ended up getting a Coastal Scents one for Christmas and it is identical pigmentation, quality, color, and even COLOR ORDER WISE to the cheaper one that I ordered from the manufacturers in China or Hong Kong or where ever.

ANYWAY, I was skeptical when I first got the cheaper 120 palette. My fiancee does construction and he has little kits that are similar to swabs and they test for all types of things that are tested on in construction sites. The swabs are supposedly very sensitive and are accurate as they use them for big jobs and to avoid law suits. He tested the cheap 120 palette and NOTHING came up and the test tests for any traces of lead, some type of harmful talc, the list was extensive I can't remember all of them off the top of my head but ALL TESTS WERE NEGATIVE. Thought someone would like to hear about that experience if you are skeptical of buying.  I use them and love them !

I had a sensitive reaction to the 88 palette and I  haven't had that with any eye shadows before( MAC, UD, Stila W & W, mineral) I'm not making any positive statements on ingredients or composition or whatever, just my experience. I see how it can be a great palette for those who don't have a reaction.

I am usually allergic to anything made in Chinacutey.gif

I have never had issues with mine at all.

They aren't the best quality eyeshadows out there - but they are great for the selection of colours. For example, I don't EVER wear red. But its Red Nose Day soon so I had to dress in red for work today (wore a wig and everything :P) - so I got out the 88 palette and used the red from that. Its not a colour I would ever buy a full sized individual of....but I was sure glad to have it this morning :P

I gave my 120 palette away because I didn't have any info on the safety of them. This is a good thread :)
