Vanity and storage solution (updated 13/07/12, with video tour and pic heavy)

UPDATED: This what my vanity looks like now that my man has built me a whole separate makeup room/boudoir.

As I mention in the video, this is in a separate room in the basement. It's nice because it does get a lot of light for a basement, but I do have strong 'daylight' bulbs in the light fixture above the vanity, and just recently found two tiny table top lamps to put on either side of the tabletop to add even more light from the side (to eliminate shadows on the face).

If you don't care to watch the video, these pictures are how each drawer is organized.

The tabletop:

Dior, Guerlain, Lancome, Nars, Lorac, Stila, Too Faced, The Balm, UD, Hourglass, Smashbox, Tarte and other mid to higher-end palettes. Stored in plastic bins from the dollar store and Container Store, Ferrero Rocher plastic boxes, and the cut-down and taped boxes the items came in.

Eye pencils, liquid liners and cream eyeshadows. And mascara and fake lashes. Stored in box lids and Godiva truffles boxes.

Single eyeshadows, and primers. In ice cube trays, plastic bins and the cut-dow and taped boxes.

Blushes, bronzers, face powders, foundations, concealers, primers. In plastic bins and random boxes.

Lipsticks and lipglosses. In candle boxes with dividers made from the cut-down boxes the lipsticks came in. Also random containers.

Low-end and drugstore palettes.

Samples, stored in a box from Homesense.

And then about 9 drawers of nail polish, which are stored more or less like this, in cut-down polish boxes.

I also collect BPAL perfumes, and the BF recently made me this gorgeous storage cabinet. It basically looks like a nice little piece of wall art, but....

....it opens up to reveal awesomeness. (The rest of my perfumes are in the boxes on the dresser, and in the shelving unit on the side.)

The bottom part of the shelving unit (behind the door) is where I store my indie BnB stuff.

And then the rest of the bath and face stuff not being currently used in the bathroom is in a teeny little linen closet just off the bathroom.

So yeah. Always a work in progress.

Re: Vanity and storage solution

So organized! And the ice cube tray idea is so perfect; it may be a space gobbler, but it looks very neat and tidy. I may have to steal that one from you!

Re: Vanity and storage solution

Thank you!

I"m actually starting to outgrow this system a bit, in terms of storage space (especially as my nail polish collection expands). I think I need to invest in a second Alex unit and find some way of squeezing it in, and moving my Helmer unit off to side and using it only for the nail stuff.

I also really want to find a dvd rack to use to hold my MAC palettes. I have nothing locally that works, but I've seen these metal ones at Target and the plastic once from the Container store.

I'll update once I have things a wee bit more organized to my liking.

Should I do a collection post as well?

Re: Vanity and storage solution

I edited my original post to reflect the fact that I added another drawer unit to my vanity, and changed around some of the content and organization of the drawers as a result.

where did you get the table-top & what is the size?

I really love the idea of cutting down boxes in half to store everything! I am envious of both your collection and your storage space smiles.gif I'm trying to reorganize mine, because it's currently all in bags! I am definitely outgrowing the system, and although everything is grouped together, it's impossible to find what I'm looking for quickly!

Definitely post more pics once your "CD" unit is in place, and I'd love to see a collection post! smiles.gif

It's from Ikea, the Vika Amon table top: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/50071170

You can choose different sizes, that one fit my space best, as the bigger one would have been just a little too big.

Love your organization! I love how you use so much packaging. I hate throwing my packaging away, but really have no idea what to do with it. Now I do!

Wow. Someone who has more makeup than me!! I will have to steal some of your ideas. I like the ice cube tray. Did you put rice in your brush holders to keep them upright?

I love this, so immaculate and clean!! The tin candle containers as brush holders are very nice.

I will use this post as inspiration for my own vanity.
