IKEA discontinuing the "Malm Dressing Table" Sold only in white???

I was at Ikea today looking & searching for the Malm dressing table I wanted it in black but apparently they are no longer selling this in black and is now only being sold in white. I was going to purchase it but wanted to hear from any of you guys about any updates when or if they will have them again or even anyone who has bought the white one and painting it like I was thinking of doing???

I know, I wanted it in black/brown and found out they discontinued it!  So bummed :(  I don't understand why cause it seems like a popular item...hopefully they will come to their senses?  I was actually thinking of getting the white also, stripping the wood and staining it brown...idk

Beachgirly do you know how to strip it and paint over it and make it look like the real thing, you know all glossy and pretty as if it was done by Ikea lol?? If so what are the steps because I really want to do it. Im trying to build a new vanity area from the grownd up. I think we should do it and trade info :)

Yeah I don't know much about painting either. Although my husband works at Home Depot I'm gonna ask him if he knows any professionals that can help or do it for me. I have fallin in LOVE w/this vanity from seeing others w/it on this site and on You Tube. All I do is think about it. Ive did my research and have found another alternative at Walmart.com but once again the black on is out of stock. They have a cool looking vanity that I have just recently ordered in espresso but I'm not "in love" with the color or the way its built...

As I said in the other thread a few weeks ago, I plan on spray painting it. I'm basing that decision on this particular kind of spray paint that is said to work and adhere to anything. We have used it once before on metal. This is what the can looks like - you would probably want the "Gloss" finish: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGBrand.asp?bid=16. I believe I got mine at Home Depot! You can use this page to find out where you can buy it :D http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGCorporate.asp?sn=lr

Hope this helps you and I hope you accomplish what you want :) I hope I can complete my plan of this soon, too!! sigh.gif

You can't strip Ikea furniture --- most of it is pressboard. I'm not sure if spraypainting it would work, I'm pretty sure it would chip off.

I too have been looking for the malm dressing table at Ikea.  Can you please send the link to the one you purchased at Walmart?  Thanks

Ikea now has this Micke desk for $69. It's not as sleek/uniform looking because the drawers are white but it's a good (cheaper) option. You can always cover the drawers with pretty paper.

My fiance has the smaller Micke as his computer desk and the drawer opens a lot more than the Malm one, which is nice. I have the smaller Malm for my makeup and I'm wasting a lot of drawer space because it just comes out 1/2 way.

I purchased the Ikea Malm table in white and I LOVE IT. I also purchased the Hollywood Vanitygirl Broadway mirror in white. LOOKS so good together. I painted my vanity room in a deep rich purple with white baseboards  and a black and crystal chandelier. I think the white looks nice and crisp anyway.

I originally wanted it in brown/black and noticed it was discontinued. I do not think we are going to find a table this size and shape anywhere else. Also, you can not strip Ikea furniture, especially this table. It is made from particle board.

best of luck!

Like so many-I was dead set on finding a vanity for my VANITY GIRL BROADWAY mirror- so when I saw the MALM dressing

table - I LOVED IT. But then saw the black/brown was discontinued-and whe white one is next the table itself is no

longer being made-according to IKEA - so yesterday I bought the WHITE MALM DRESSING TABLE and then this morning I

spray painted it-I used Krylon in black-  and it turned out stunning. It took only 2 passes ( the first coat is

pictured without glass top ) Here is a link to the SPRAY PAINTED MALM-WHITE TO BLACK

I am planning on doing the same thing as you. Did you paint each separate piece of the vanity before you put it together or did you  put it together then spray paint it?

Hey girls, I'm not sure where u live, but if u live in the L.A. area, there's currently one for sale on craigslist for $100. I was fortunate to find mine a month ago for $80 =)

Can someone please let me know what the inside dimensions are of the sliding drawer? Thanks!

Just a friendly reminder that all sales/swaps must be posted within the Clearance Bin area.  Posts made outside of the Clearance Bin will be moved/removed.  Thanks!

I wish they still made them in the black/ brown color, but even then I'm not sure it would fit in our bedroom. Sigh... They should make them slightly shorter (length wise) and in multiple finishes...

Does the paint rub off? I would like to spray paint it like you did  but I want to make sure that it will not rub off on my carpet or walls. Both my carpet and walls are a light-ish creme color & slightly darker cream color.

I'm not done with the room yet, but here is what I have going so far. I'm buying the Alex at Ikea tomorrow.

The MALM is such a beautiful table but I CAN'T justify paying $349 in shipping cost for a $149 table.  The nearest Ikea is 4 hours away, so I guess I'll have to scout Craigslist or find a cheaper alternative.  ohboy.gif

I know! Their shipping is crazy! They wanted to charge me $199.00 shipping for the same table. Luckily for me they are only 45 minutes away, so I drove down there twice this past month. Craigslist is a good way to go about it too. You might also want to keep an eye out for the micke desk. I had a change of heart when I checked out both tables at ikea. The micke is cheaper and has more drawer space. thmbup.gif

The IKEA Malm was the best makeup table ever :( and so, sooooo cheap. I got the natural wood tone one, I am glad I got it when I did but so sad cause I might want another one day :( Its the only makeup table I'll ever find that is roomy enough for my Vanity Girl Mirror. I hope IKEA brings this back. Or makes a better version! lol

She didn't really paint this which is why she's not giving the exact color or before and after pics.
