Reimbursed for makeup $$$ for a play

Hey all,

I wasn't sure where to post this thread. Admin, please relocate this thread to a more appropriate spot if necessary.

I've recently offered to do the makeup for a production of The Wiz that a local church youth group is doing. I've never had any kind of gig before! (I'm 17, BTW.) The other people on staff have told me that they will write me a check so I can purchase the makeup and other materials that I'll need. Now, I have plenty of makeup for my own personal use, but not much that is really kit-worthy (no range of foundation shades, absolutely no stage makeup, no special effects).

I've made a list of everything that I feel that I need, but the total cost scares me. So I'm wondering: How much money is to much to ask for? What limits should I set? Is there anything that I should try to just buy with my own money?

Thanks in advance!

Make sure you will not end up out of pocket.  Doesn't help anyone in the long haul.  If you're unsure what is too much, I'd advise you to have a talk with them about their budget.  There are sometimes a lot of ways to cut corners, but in doing so, please make sure that proper sanitation is applied.  It's often a nightmare in theatre to keep things from getting contaiminated.  Also, are you planning to do each actor? or just the mains?  Make sure you will have enough time to accomplish what you need to and consider bringing in an assistant.

Best of luck!

I'll probably ask the staff about a budget. A lot of the stuff I don't have is also sanitary stuff, like brush cleanser in a spray bottle, a mixing palette, rubbing alcohol, etc. Yes, that's all relatively cheap, but it all adds up >.< I don't want anything contaminated, eek!

I'm doing makeup for most of the cast, but not every role will be wearing makeup (mainly the guys). I'm doing the mains for sure.

Thanks so much! :)

You're most welcome!  If you're unsure about anything that comes up, even foundation choices, feel free to message me.  Wish you all the best!
