Glitter and Glitter Related Precautions

Please use extreme caution when using glitter products in the eye area. Read product precautions and ingredients. If the glitter you are using is metallic or plastic based, do not use it in the eye area. Doing so can result in eye injury including but not limited to abraided corneas, which can lead to blindness. Craft glitter should never be used, even as body glitter, as the metals and pigments used are not cosmetic grade and can cause health problems or staining of the skin.

Even Ultra-Fine glitter is not eye-safe. There are two brands of cosmetic grade glitter that are FDA/FD&C approved for eye-use, that I know of. They are Tony and Tina's "Cosmic Lights"* and Jerome Russell's "Pixie Sparkle". Take a look at http://www.tonytina.com or http://www.jeromerussell.com/ for more information.

I hear that Girlactik might be eye-safe, but I have yet to recieve their testing and approval report, and as such cannot vouch for their product. I do use Tony and Tina's product on my clients on a regular basis, as well as personally. It is an amazing product.

Even eye-safe glitters can be mildly abraisive or irritating. If you do get particles in your eye and they are irritating, DO NOT RUB your eye. Rise your eye out well with eye wash or a neutral saline solution (such as Visine Tears). If irritation persists, contact your eye-care professional.

As always, be aware and cautious of glitter use whilst wearing contact lenses.

*Please note that Tony and Tina glitters may not considered eye-safe in some countries within Europe and Asia. This may be due to a differance in formulation, or a differance in precautionary labelling. Tony and Tina also have been adding a few plastic based glitters to their line, all of which are transparent, and easily discernable from their eye-safe paper counterparts.

Do you think using MAC's Glittercreams on the eyes [as a base color] is a bad idea?

Yes, glitter cremes are not eye-safe.

I know this thread is for questions regarding using glitter around the eye, but I am alarmed at the use of Jacquard Pearl Ex Powders as substitutes for the ones MAC offers (MAC Pigment). I belong to a make-up forum on myspace and many young women are buying the Jacquards Pearl Ex Powders to use as eyeshadows when in fact it is meant to use for crafts. Please forward this info to other make-up afficionados.

Who in their right mind would use that kind of stuff next to their eyes!? That's horrible!

I first saw the pigments in the store about a year ago and thought to myself i really hope noone mistakes these for eyeshadow substances, but of course people have.
I even emailed the company to prove to these girls these are not orginally created for makeup, just for crafts.
Just because it is non-toxic does not mean it's safe for the eyes.
If someone gets an eye infection of scratch it's their own fault.

Re: Glitter and Glitter Related Precautions

I know this might be a dumb question, but are Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliners ok to put on the inside of the bottom lid of the eye. I do that all the time and sometimes the flakes of glitter get into my eyes

You should NEVER use any glitter product, even eye-safe glitters, on the waterline or for tightlining.

I cannot agree more. I am a visual artist & cannot overstate the potential dangers of art supplies & materials. "Non toxic" simply means that exposure to a certain substance or ingredient won't put you in hospital right away! It dosen't measure accumlated poisoning or damage over years of exposure.

Many fine art products are formulated with toxic metals (lead, cadmium) and they should be used for their intended purpose with gloves &/or respirators! Imagine then putting these products on your eyes or lips!

Re: Glitter and Glitter Related Precautions

Can you use glitters BELOW the lowerlash line (NOT on the waterline)
Has anyone had problems with this somehow getting into your eye?
Or is it best to just not risk it?

Re: Glitter and Glitter Related Precautions

MAC artists have been known to use glitters on customers and models. I know they not to use them but some how I think it's more for covering MAC's butt if someone isn't careful and hurts themselves. I know we weren't allowed to when I worked at the MAC counter but I also know that there have been videos of fashion shows were the artist is using glitters on the eye. I've also been told by customers before that artists in pro locations have used glitter on their eyes.

With that being said. I do agree with Marty that you should be really cautious using them. And I have been told by another MAC artist that as long as you use them in a gel product it should be fine. So I imagine if you're going to use it you should probably use it with Eyeliner Mixing Medium.

Question, If I am using glitter in the eye area, what "adhesive" is eye safe for eyes?
