Yeah, we're MAs as well....every location is different as far as what they look for in a PS.
At my location it works like this...
*Your management team recognizes that you are doing well as an artist and see growth potential in you and/or you express interest in the position to them/the current PSs
*They hold interviews w/ all the potential candidates & the trainer(s)
*You get the position/you don't & you try again in 6 months

Everything MisStarrlight said is the way it works at my counter too, but I didn't have a formal interview, just a private chat with my manager about why i want to be product specialist and what i think i can bring to that role.
Not sure about the rest of the world but in Australia the Product Specialist role is now 12 months and there is a lot more responsibility to the role.
I got the role 2 weeks ago, yay!
