i'd say if your just starting out, forget about past mac L/E collections. Move on with the new! The price of rares is not worth it, unless you really like the color or something. BTW the only way to find rares is to once again pray and check the clearance bin, it may take months, or it may take years.. depends on how lucky you get.

Does Mac have a clearance bin, or are you just saying clearance bins in general? I was just wondering...

Oh and by the way, these tips are very helpful!! Its fun to learn from all of you!

This is a really good point. I'd never thought of fire proof storage... but if my place ever caught fire, there aren't many things that I would be more upset about losing. Actually, aside from my computer, I think my MAC collection is the most valuable thing I own haha.

A CCO is an outlet where Estee Lauder and all their companies (incl. MAC) sell stuff from out-of-date collections for ultra cheap.

And there's only one collecting rule from now until February...

BUY NOTHING. SAVE FOR HELLO KITTY.

I also wanted to ask the bigger collectors- where do you get those huge pallets that you put shadows in after depotting them? I'm dying to organize my small collection a bit more...

ETA: neverminddd...after browsing a bit more I found you can order them over the phone through MAC. Ugh...Hate being a newbie lol.

    Re: "Collecting MAC Tips"

For new-to-MAC folks, post tips for storage of everything, hauling, raising money for the big price of MAC, buying off of eBay, and getting products that started a long time ago but are gone, where to get really rare/discontined products, etc.

Well, I just started collecting Mac starting somewhere in the end of July of 2008.

    Storage- Sephora Metro Traincase.

I have 1 in silver, and currently saving up to buy more in different colors.

    Hauling & Raising Money-
I can really get carried away with hauling sometimes, but I set up a little make-up fund. When I first began collecting make-up I would just spend soo much money that I could not keep track. So I got myself those pre-paid visas, and say I put $100 in there for a 3-month period or something like that.

    That I way I won't overspend.

    Re: "Collecting MAC Tips"

I'm pretty new to MAC too. My first ever haul was the Red She Said collection, and trust me, I spent sooooo much money on it. I'm am really really addicted to MAC, especially lippies and blushes. I seem to want all of them. Plus the upcoming color collections are soooo gorgeous I'm predicting I'm gonna spend a fortune on them (Monogram, Dame Edna, Brunette Redhead Blonde, Hello Kitty, etc).

For now, I'm just limiting myself to making a small purchase only once per week at most twice (as opposed to buying every alternate day). It's painful, but it has to be done before the spending gets out of hand, especially since I'm only a student and am not earning any income. Also, I try to limit my spending on the permanent collection because I'm more interested in the LE stuff. Only in-between color collections then I may stock up on the perm stuff, but when there's a color collection out I usually only focus on that.

Have yet to find a storage place too, right now I'm using only a fancy little box.

to organize your brushes, buy a glass container (round) and fill it with small plastic balls called "vase fillers" you can find these at michael's. with those, u can make ur own sephora-inspired brush holders. if u've been to sephora, u know what i'm talking about. it's cheap, convenient, and easy!

i think that's a good idea because the hello kitty brush holder is very shallow and may not be able to hold longer brushes. plus it's so expensive!!

    Re: "Collecting MAC Tips"

Lol everyone's said what i had in mind but here's a little something to add:

BEFORE you walk into the MAC store, set a budget for yourself and take out whatever your budget is in CASH! I would suggest going to a nearby ATM if you plan on doing some heavy yet limited shopping and may be nervous about carrying all that money to the store.

this way, you wont be able to add more items than intended- like i do. =/

The brining cash thing is a good idea...even though i'm not new to MAC, but i'm new to collecting it. I use to wear it back in the day, then I stopped wearing makeup for a long time, then recently got hooked on it again, from watching youtube ,lol.... it also dosen't help that I stay about 20 mins from a CCO... but these tips are great.

is there a container store, ikea, bed bath & beyond near you? they have so many storage ideas to fit any room/lifestyle. i prefer ikea sometimes because a lot of their products are cheap as hell.

Wow... You sound like my twin. I have been using MAc for a while, but I stopped wearing make up for a long time and youtube got be back into it also! The closest CCO is about 15 minutes from me with about 3-4 in an hours radius. It is DANGEROUS!!!
