I don't keep track of how long I've had them, I throw them out when they start drying up or applying bad or if they smell different.

    vinegar? lol..

I am constantly rotating and throwing out mascara's -- they are really dangerous if they get infected and any bacteria or virus lives very happily in the tube.

I don't have many mascara so I finish then before 3 month so I can't really answer. But I think I have one since 5 month and I still keep it. But If I still have it in 3 month I will chuck it. I can't keep it more than one years, I know it's already too much

I have yet to buy a mascara that turned bad. Maybe I just finish them before they have a chance to turn bad Anyway, I rarely throw out mascara since it rarely happens to me that I buy a mascara I don't like since I'm buying stuff I already had at some point and loved. New mascara I want to check out I firstly do a thorow check up here or on MUA and it usually is a good way to buy exactly what I want in a mascara. The ones I don't like, I pass to my best friend/roomate that's not picky about makeup at all and just grabs first thing she can find

I go by the application of the formula... which is usually dependent on how often I wore makeup those past days. I usually toss out every 4-6 months.

Yep, every three months. I keep a sticker on the tube with the date I first used it, so that I know when to toss it.

i have a label maker, so when i open them, i make a label of the opening date and stick it on the tube.. i probably toss them after 6-10 weeks, they seem to loose their "effectiveness" after that time (clumping, sticky, etc.) even before they;re expired

I'm suprised to see so many people keep it longer than 3 months! I always toss mine after 2 months, and that's me pushing it! I'm just scared of getting an infection so I like to take extra precausions

I like to get the mini size tubes so I don't feel bad for tossing them when it gets unusable.

I do about 6 months, especially since I'm addicted to high end mascaras. Too much money to chuck after 3 months if they still seem fine.

If the mascara hasn't started drying out or changing smell etc then i have no problem keeping a mascara for as long as it lasts. I've had a chanel inimitable that has lasted about 6/8months but a mufe smokey lash that lasted about a month or so before i had to chuck it. Very disappointed with that one considering the price.

Every 3 months. I love my eyes. I am not even going to take a chance, but it seems that by that time my mascara isn't even working well, and if I have one that was a freebie and I don't even remember when I got it, I just toss it out. I plan to keep my MU collection in tip top condition!

Yes, three months at the max. Especially mascara is so prone in getting contaminated and I would not want to risk any eye infection.

I won't say the longest I kept a mascara once. (It smelled and performed fine! I just... probably should have chucked it... about... um... a bit before I did.) I normally just go by scent and how it looks on the wand, but mostly scent. I'm pretty sensitive to the smell of things going off, so when my Plushlash started smelling funky plasticy, into the bin it went.

And then two months later when I remembered I could've Back2Mac'd that sucker, I was soooo pissed with myself. XD

Normally, though, it's gone before a year is up, especially now that I wear make-up at least three times a week.

I only throw mine when it's empty, maybe to some of you that's a bit gross but I'm the only person that uses it & it performs/smells/looks fine so I gather it's safe enough to use

I throw mine out at least every three months. Probably more often than that. Mascara is something that I a pretty sensitive too. If I start having issues after only a month of use, then in the trash it goes.

I stop using mine when it starts to get dry and flakey on my eyelashes, which is usually around the 3-6 month mark. I don't like to keep it any longer than that because my eyes get noticably more irritated. Had an occassion when I got quite a bad infection so that was my lesson learnt. It's a shame if all of it isn't used up because good make-up can cost a bomb.

And yeah, how do you know when mascara has run out? Does the wand just go dry?

MU is expensive, but health bills can cost even more. And can you put a price on healthy eyes anyway?

It's better to be safe than sorry. If you can't remember the date, just start a system where you already have a replacement mascara at home. This way, it is less likely that you keep using an old mascara.

So do I! I always grab the mini size mascaras from magazines because I don't use it everyday, in fact, I throw the mascara out when it's dry, and I have never finished one entire tube

That is so true. I think it's true what RockingMom said, mini tubes are they way to go. But unless they are samples, I can only find larger 'normal sized' tubes.
