I am considering going to FIDM for fashion design. Little background on me: I’m 20 years old going on 21 I am currently not going to school for anything but before I left LA for Dubai I was finishing high school and I was contemplating going to school there, I don’t know how to sew let alone draw. My only concern about this is that I’m not sure that I have an act for just coming up with a design like u see on project runway, I can be creative. I love clothes and coming up with outfits for me or my family (to get an idea you can check out my polyvore http://dneesy.polyvore.com/, let me know what you think please do be honest.

I guess what I’m asking is if anyone who has graduated from FIDM with a fashion design degree if there are any other options? I just would love some more information about all that. I have read every tab under the fashion design tab on their website but I’m just a little confused after reading it all. Can someone please help me in breaking it down for me? And what does it take to do this? It feels very intimating reading all these stories of very successful people. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I would like to know the pros and cons of possibly attending this school. any advice will be greatly appreciated..

My suggestion would be to find out when they have open house tours and that will help you decide. I remember going to Dallas for a presentation and Austin to see a rep about more info about the school. My perception was changed as soon as they mentioned semesters were less than a year long but cost as much as going to a four year university for 2-4 years.

My humble suggestion would be to go to community college with a really good design program and get an associates or BA there because it will cost you less in the long run.

Another suggestion I have is finding out if you have an active Fashion Group International (FGI) near you and going to a career day/fair they organize. Or just finding out if there are career fairs at schools or something like that. If you have the money and resources go to Dallas' before registration closes. Last year this time I was registering my fashion show org to go to one of these in Dallas. My crappy school only has fashion merchandising but does not specialize in anything else relative to fashion--so it's pretty weak. Going to the FGI career day was so informative and made me regret not going to a school that really fed money to its school of fashion design and merchandising. There was a fashion show at the end of the career day where students entered in their designs and a Houston community college was killing it. A community college---a community college! The top winner was from a community college!

There was also a school rep from the Paris American Academy who was talking about taking classes in Paris! So you may want to consider studying outside the US. And best of all there were so many professionals ready to look at and critique resumes, hire people for work or internships, or talk about getting into their career fields (which varied widely).

So before you barrel down and think it's gotta be Parsons, FIT, or FIDM really look at everything else. And also call up alumni from institutions you're interested in and do informational interviews:Do a phone interview, offer to take them to lunch or get coffee, talk about how they decided on that institution and their career, obstacles, etcetera.

i teach at a community college that has a fashion design department. i would advise looking into this first- you would gain necessary experience and learn a lot about assembling a portfolio, sewing etc. it will be lower cost as well, and will almost definitely help you network. most of the people who work at colleges have SOME sort of contacts in whatever industry or with professors at their alma mater (whether it be advisors or mentors, whatever).

we are close to nyc, so a lot of students end up moving on to FIT afterwards :)
