Well, as we age (and go through menopause), our coloring changes and looks less fresh, our skin gets drier, our lips get wrinkles. And matte brick is no longer flattering (if it ever was). I'm a real busy body (Mrs. Walgreens, here), so i occasionally try to encourage those women to test some other colors and finishes - something that will make their skin tones look less dead, although i sure don't phrase it like that! Note that i can't speak for WoC, so if there are any older dark-skinned beauties here, i'd like to know how your skin changes...
Personally, or maybe it's just because i have a neutral skin tone, i like to have a minimum of one warm color and one cool color lipstick in my makeup travel bag, so i have something to wear with different colors of clothing. IMNSHO, the same color lipstick rarely looks good with everything, with a few exceptions.
In looking over my own lip product inventory, i realize i have an awful lot of frosts. I know it isn't the 1970s anymore
and i'm not getting any younger
(sigh)... maybe i need to get more with creamy or satiny finishes, so i'm not in a rut from my younger daze.

Lip Pencil - Heroine - Bright purple
Eye Shadow - Embrace Me - Blue pink (satin)
And i want to check out the Ablaze Lipstick, Lipglass, and Lip Pencils, just in case they really are apricot...
