Returns/Exchanges at MAC

I was wondering what happens when you exchange or return something at MAC. Do they trash it because they don't know if you've tried it? Or do they do a visual inspection to make sure it's unused and re-sale them? This is my burning question of the night. Thanks in advance guys and gals.
