Brush Cleaning help

My mother hates for me to clean her brushes so she'll use them for months on end and lets foundation get caked into the bristles making it really disgusting and germy. So I wash them when she's not looking. Anyway

Last night I washed her too faced kabuki and it changed the feel of the brush. The brush is dry now and the bristles are somewhat clumped together and stiff. The didn't return to their original state. I simply used water and some shampoo. I don't know what went wrong

Can any of you lovely ladies give me a hand?

Try washing it again, make sure you use warm water and get all of the shampoo out. Once you have done that put some conditioner on the brush and work it in. Then wash it all out using warm water.
Make sure all of the conditioner is out.

This should stop the brush being dry and should make it soft and nice again.
Hope this works.
