Clarification of e-commerce links policy

I have seen a few posts edited by moderators to remove e-commerce links. I am curious as to why e-commerce links are forbidden. I have read the FAQ, and done searches, but I still don't know why.

I understand that spamming the board trying to sell stuff is not welcome, but I am curious as to why posting relevant and helpful links to a product's official site, or a site that sells that product, is prohibited.

It's a fine line on what call to make when you are a staff member moderating threads. Currently and up to this point, it's just been easier on my staff to enforce a no e-commerce link policy. There has been discussion lately with upper level staff on changing this policy due to the growth of the forum, which is a good thing because guidelines need to evolve with the site. Thank you for asking us to clarify this issue for you. It may not be a concise answer, but I just wanted to let you know this is currently being addressed.
