Well I am completely lost on this one. My friend wants me to do her makeup for prom and her dress is hot pink with orange sequins and gold accents. As for eyeshadow, smokey eye? Will that look really weird? Please help!

I'm sort of having a hard time picturing this dress (sorry, I guess I'm low on imagination), but since it sounds pretty colourful, you'll probably want to stick to more neutral eye make-up. Smoky eye would probably be quite nice, or even something gold to bring out the gold accents in the dress. Something pinkish-gold like Gleam or Expensive Pink would likely match quite beautifully.

I would definitely not add more pink to the eyes - I think the hot pink in the dress is enough.
Definitely try a subtle gold smoky (nothing too dramatic since there's a lot going on with the dress in terms of color and intensity already). Perhaps try softer golds with bronze in the crease.
Perhaps combine with a softer pinky-coral blush and soft lips

I'm leaning more towards a copper-brown tone for the eyes, which a smokey effect will work well on. Subtle pink accents would also look great as it will compliment the dress. Gold accents added towards the inner eye will look great, in my opinion. A warm, coral-based blush and a soft pink for the lips would work well too.

Since this is prom, I say do something special. A smokey eye, in my opinion, is not the best bet for a hot pink dress. I would say do a light neutral eye but with lots of eyelashes. Not crazy porn star lashes or anything, just thick, full lashes maybe with a few individual falsies in the outer corners. Then do some contouring with a bronzer which will look great with the colour of the dress. Use a light peachy pink blush (my fave will always be NARS Orgasm). Then put all the focus on the lips with a hot pink gloss!! I love NARS Hot-Wired, or MAC Pink Poodle. Have fun with it!

Like some of the other posters suggested, either focus on her eyes (I would use coppery/gold/brown and smoke it up with those colors) or on her lips (neutral eyes, pop of color on her lips). I did makeup for a dress with similar colors on it last weekend and I did a gold/brown smokey eye (not too smoky..very blended out) and used Wonderstruck lustreglass...the girl got a million compliments on her walk from the chair to the register (go me...
!)...hth!
