Lipstick & First Date

I have a first date coming up and of course I want to look AMAZING. I'm relatively new to lipstick, but have been really pleased by how powerful and sexy some colors have made me look. I've always avoided lipstick b/c it wears away as you talk and looks gross after you eat. My dilemma is: how can I rock lipstick on a date without it looking grody in a few hours? I don't want to appear high maintenance and I don't want to be stressed unnecessarily. Any flawless lipstick tips for me? I'm thinking I need to wear a matte or lip tar both of which have left me with ring around the mouth at dinner.

If its just a date for a few hours I'd put on something long wearing. I like my stila stay all day for long wear and its not that bad on transfering either. Personally I never wear gloss on dates because I get that white line after a few hours. I don't want to put my date in a position to tell me about it. As far as color I'd go for neutral to natural pinks, especially if the guy isn't use to seeing you in colors.

The guy I'm currently dating met me with bright colors so I didn't have an issue wearing the colors at first. But deeper into the relationship we started making a lot and let me just tell you making out with hot red lipstick then having makeup all over your/his face is not hot. lol

Kim you had me cracking up. Someone just looked at me when they went by my office. I remember after a session wondering what happened to my Scarlet Ibis. I was totally bare lipped, but satisfied.

I do not have any neutral/natural pinks. Nearly all my lipsticks are BOLD which is kind of funny. Do you have any drugstore or mall brand recommendations? We don't have a MAC around here.

I agree with Kim. I always go for longwearing. I can attest to the Stila Longwear, because I own one in Fiery and I really like it. If the person is not used to seeing you in brights or darks, I would do neutral shades or pinks then slowly introduce those sexy shades.
As much as I love my high end lipsticks, I love drugstore lipsticks as well and I will say that you can't go wrong with any of the Revlon Matte lipstick line, the Rimmel Kate Matte line (they have some really gorgeous shades, #4 is a gorgeous neutral) or Nyx ( Honey is pretty), if you have an Ulta nearby or if you can find a beauty supply store that sells Nyx. The new Milani lipsticks are good too. I would start there.

I also agree with the no gloss thing. It's just too messy and I get the white ring too. I wore a nude lip with a nude gloss on a date and I kept having to adjust the way I ate which was so awkward and obvious! lol

But most importantly, wear something that you feel comfortable in. I have a friend that wears red lips regardless of the occasion. She'll be in sweats running errands and will have red lips. It's an attention grabber and guys are always the first to talk to her (it doesn't hurt that she has an awesome personality), but she feels comfortable with it on and I've never heard any of the guys complain or even point it out. Rock what you feel comfortable in and you will feel more confident! And you know guys love confident girls

(Sorry that was long winded, didn't think I had much to say on the topic initially)

It wasn't long winded at all. I appreciate your input. Especially listing specific shades b/c I am no good just picking out a lipstick shade by sight. I have to have it co-signed by someone. I was considering wearing Deeply Adored b/c that is MY red and I feel incredible in it. Ulta is 30 minutes away and sorry, but he's not worth all that. LOL It will have to be drugstore, but I have no idea what will look good on me. I've looked for the Rimmel Kate Matte #4 and can't find it. Do you have a link or other suggestions? Does Revlon still make their lipsticks super fragrant? I had to throw away my last ones b/c I could taste them. Or maybe that was L'Oreal... Anyway, the other thing I was thinking was just doing a smoky eye and nude lip wearing Freckletone + gloss. Of course that will come off right away so I don't know if it's a good dinner option. It probably wouldn't look as bad as it faded though.

You know, it's funny. I never wore lipstick b/c I'd always get that white schmear on my lips when wearing gloss. You guys are right, lipstick doesn't really do that. Gloss was the culprit all along. I thought something was wrong with me and I used to feel gross and embarrassed. Kim made me laugh when she said I didn't want to put the person in the position to have to tell me my lips are frothy.

Lol that was hilarious. I chuckled at that froth too! I do like nude lips with gloss though. I said all that in my previous post, but just last night I had a nude lip with gloss and was at a Mexican restaurant chomping down on nachos, so..... I'm not a really good example haha

Have you tried Revlon Mink? It is probably one of the best WOC friendly nude lippies at the drugstore. I don't find that they have a taste or a scent. I have many Revlons and I love everything about them. I actually do not think they have a scent at all, but I am a bad judgment in smell, because smells don't really bother me. I haven't noticed a taste either.

Also, I am an idiot! The rimmel lipstick is 104 not 04!

Here is the link on a WOC:

I hope that helps!

Vampy you had me looking all over tarnation for that lippie! I'll see if I can find it at the store. Thanks for the blog link. That was very helpful. I have MUFE Aqua Rouge in Rosewood #2, but I just can't wear it b/c the fragrance is so strong I can taste it. It's gross. I returned a lipstick of theirs b/c of the same thing. Anyway, the Aqua Rouge came right off during dinner plus it was sticky. I don't know if I did something wrong or what. I think maybe I was thinking of a L'Oreal lipstick that I had that was scented so strongly I could taste it. Prior to the last 6 months, I hadn't purchased a lipstick in I don't know 6 years. I might pick up Revlon Mink, too. That looks very nice.

Girl he just sent me a text saying "5 o'clock chips and salsa tomorrow night?' Seriously? LOL. He clearly doesn't know I'm fly. But for real I can envision the chips will be flying out of my mouth when I take a bite. Girls don't like to eat tacos b/c they have to turn their head sideways to eat them meaning they don't look cute. (I learned that by watching Bar Rescue and it was spot on. I'd never thought of it.) We had been discussing meeting up Thursday, but never made it official. He lives an hour and change away so we don't even know where we're meeting up. I get off work at 5pm so no time to freshen up. Ahhh what to do?

eta:
Ok he's thinking 5-7 so not a real date just a meet and greet. So I gotta look fly all day at work and choose something that's not really dinner, but more than coffee. Chips and salsa is so lame. We're not in college. He's beginning to remind me of my ex...

Come back and tell us how it goes! I love first date stories hell I love the beginning of relationship stories. It's always bliss the best time! I agree with Vampy if you can get your hands on Kate's MATTE lippies they are awesome. I love shade 107 it reminds me of Deeply Adored by MAC. For neutral shades I'd go 104 or 105, but girl if you feeling flirty hell yeah I'd rock a banging bold lip.

ETA: I was also thinking the Drew Barrymore Flowerlipsticks, I'm not huge on them...but they are matte and the color isn't too intense. Perfect for dates and bold eyes (bold eyes when you want a bold lip color but not too loud in your face)

Stilas Fiery lipstick def. says "I want you right here right now" I get approached so much with that lipstick. lol

So I think the chips and salsa thing was his way of trying to make it not so much, kwim? And I think he gave the time limit to give himself an out. I chose a place near my office so I could walk there after work. I told him I'd probably stay after he left to have dinner b/c I liked something on the menu. Now he gonna flip the script and say we have time for dinner, too.

Now I have to find an entirely different outfit than I planned. I was wanting to be a little va va voom, but that will be tough in work clothes. Also it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow. Frick! I may try the smokey eye thing for work, but I don't know. I have a big meeting tomorrow. I'll focus on the dress first and makeup second.

I'll fill you ladies in for sure. Thanks for participating. It's nice to get it out since no one in my life knows about it.

I think the chips and salsa comment was an ice breaker. We'd had a rather tense conversation the previous day about race and he knew I was heated. I don't think he was really sure where he stood at that point. Of to the store to get my lippies and then home to find an outfit. I'll be back with a full report.

Got the lipsticks. They are soooo boring compared to my current stash LOL. I do need some everyday colors though so it's all good. Thanks so much. Now I'm trying to find something to where that flatters my figure. Is this dress too matronly? I have big hooties so the keyhole top actually shows a little cleave. The waist is cut to accentuate my hourglass figure. The only iffy parts for me are the pleating in the front (it's adding a bit more bulk than I actually have) and the pattern is quite busy.

Yay for the lipsticks!! I know, boring colors but Mac has spoiled us lol

I'm a "yea" on the dress! I really like it! If it does rain, it will be a perfect rainy day dress!

I've got a bright yellow shift that is figure flattering except the neckline is too high. Not really flattering to larger busts. Plus my hooties are my bread and butter.

Cant find it online, but got it at Banana Republic outlet and it looks expensive. I am also thinking about these three pencil skirts.

This dress was on my radar, but there's an 80% chance of thunderstorms all day and all my matching shoes are suede. Plus the high neck again

You really can't go wrong with any of those skirts! I really like the skirts on the outer left and outer right!

I love Banana Republic btw!

Ended up going with the middle skirt after retrying on everything this morning. LOL. The skirt on the far right is beautiful, but it makes my bum look slightly wider and flatter. Fine for work, but not when you want to look good coming and going. The red skirt on the left is sexy, but I was going to wear a yellow top with it (decided white might end up with a spill) however yellow and red are extremely bold choices and with my pattern mixing I didn't want to go ultra-fashionista. The middle high-waist pencil skirt is very flattering. It has ruching at the hips to make it a little more fitted to curves yet it falls just over the knees to make it appear conservative. I tucked in the top to show off a tapered waist. The top is very fitted to show off my curves but has a neckline high enough to keep things covered. The metallic coloring on my belt is gold rather than the silver pictured. I'm just wearing it decoratively over the skirts top band. First time I've ever worn brown shoes with black, but it looks good together.

Makeup: UD Naked palette - Half Baked to highlight with Sin just under the brows. Toasted on inner half of lid and Smog in outer half. Darkhorse in crease and outer V w/ MAC's Soft Brown for transition. UD Perversion black liner and Armani Eyes to Kill mascara. NARS Lovejoy on the cheeks. I brought my new lipsticks plus Deeply Adored and guess what? I forgot to bring lip liners for the Mink and #104. Looks like I will be wearing Deeply Adored. I hope it doesn't clash with my top which is a bright reddish orange or bright burnt orange.

Dying to know how "chips and salsa" went and how the LS worked out! Love the outfit you pulled, too.

I did not forget about you all just had a busy weekend moving my daughter from college.

So the date went... okay. He said the chips and salsa was kind of a joke/ice breaker. For some reason when we were discussing the possibility days earlier he picked up that I loved Mexican food. Not true I just like it, but he was trying. Funniest part of all is that we did not order chips and salsa. I brought it up as an option several times. LOL The restaurant was good, but I was surprised at how busy it was for a Thursday night. Unfortunately it made for a difficult time hearing one another. He was cute and I was cute, but I honestly did not feel physical chemistry. I'm not saying there couldn't be some later, but I just wasn't hot for him at all. It was kind of strange actually. He texted me afterwards saying it's nice to meet new people. I doubt we will see each other again and I'm cool with that. I dislike awkwardness.

Unfortunately I had a lipstick mini-fiasco. I was stuck with Deeply Adored as I said. I applied it beautifully, however, it totally clashed with the shirt. I was a little embarrassed, but it was too late. I just rocked it and smiled a lot.

Felt so badly leaving you ladies hanging all weekend. Sorry there was nothing juicy to report. No love connection, but I got two nice lippies out of the deal. I'm wearing the Rimmel Kate Matte #104 today and it looks lovely. Would have never picked it for myself. I appreciate all the support and the hype. My ex is being all kinds of sweet now and my daughter made a family collage type Mother'd Day card which I know made him all gushy so I'm sure I'll be back in old habits soon. Oh well. I got to go out and meet somebody new, I didn't have to drive, and I don't think I'll have any of that awkward first date I-don't-think-so. I'm cool with it all and had a lot of fun sharing it with you all.
