Body acne treatments?

Hey all!

I am pretty new to this board (got sucked in here by all the MAC swatches - haha). Anyways, I just discovered this board and thought I would ask a question and get myself active on the whole specktra site.

About me, I have ahd acne pretty much from a teenager to now (I am 32). I took accutane when I was 16 and had clear skin for a good 5-7 years and then slowly it all started to creep back up on me.

The worst part is after my teen years and in my adult life my acne has migrated to my arms and sometimes my chest. So, I can't wear cute little sleeveless tops or tanks. In fact, I usually have to find tops that are a certain sleeve length or they are a no go. I have tried switching shampoos and body washes and not using things that may irritate. We have changed laundry detergent and I don't use dryer sheets anymore or I use free and clear sheets. Nothing seems to make a significant improvement.

All that said, I am making a doctors appointment to see what she can prescribe since it has been a while since I have tried a medication.

I guess my question is, has anyone had success with a prescription or a medicated body cream or anything in general? I am sick of this!

One last side note, in the summer time if we are at the lake a lot and I am getting a lot of sun exposure, I notice that my arms look a lot better. It is strange. Just throwing that out there in case someone else has that same situation.

Thanks all@

Try Murads Body Wash. Its about $40 a bottle but I love it. You can get it from Murads.com, Sephora, Ulta, drugstore.com, etc.

I have a friend that was prescribed Retin-A as a topical acne medication from a dermatologist and it worked wonders for his really bad back acne.

As for the sun comment - it DOES clear it up temporarily, but it can actually make it worse in the long run. I noticed the same thing when I used to fake and bake in a tanning bed and it looked better at first, but only made it come out worse later on.

If you can get your hands on a Benozyl Peroxide body wash, I'd suggest that too. Anything 5% and over is great for drying out the acne. You can also buy creams or gels that can be used as spot treatments. I have a friend who is a pharmacist and he mixes up 12.5% for me for free - its really strong, but my acne can be fierce. Lots of initial flaking - and if you are dark-skinned, it warns you of possible skin bleaching.

I actually tried a sample bottle of this and it didn't really do much for me. Thank you though!

Great point!

Where would one get a BP body wash? At the pharmacy counter maybe? Do you have one that you use?

You can get it in the regular acne section in any store. I use Panoxyl, Benzagel5, BenOxyl5 or Solugel brand. They come in cream, gel, and bar soaps/washes.

I know that Clean & Clear makes a spot treatment with BP5% in it as well as Clearasil and OXY - they come in little boxes.
