Core closet items

As it seems I didn't get the job I wanted for this summer (or at the very least, I've passed the point of no return and now must decline if I am offered the job in the upcoming weeks), I'm going to have more time than I had anticipated.

That said, I'm going to ramp up the effort being put into my current garment projects, and probably start working both on the ready-to-wear line that I've been planning, and on re-vamping my core closet items. Think, separates.

That said, what, in your opinion, are the most important pieces of clothing to have? A jacket? Slacks? Skirt? Shirt? If you could only have ten
pieces of clothing (not including underpinnings and accessories), what would you want them to be?

When someone else asked me this question not long ago, my initial response was:
I don't wear trousers/slacks/pants/whatever you wish to call them. I
wear skirts or dresses every day. That said, for me having a variety of
skirts (floor length, ankle length, mid-calf, just below the knee) and
dresses (long sleeve, short sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, varied lengths) are
very important to me. Most of my tops are knit tops or fitted
button-down shirts, generally 3/4 length or long sleeved, as they tend
to be more versatile to me. I have a couple cap-sleeved tank type tops
which I have mainly for their interesting necklines. Having a
lightweight fitted jacket is also something important to me, as it
allows me to quickly dress-up an outfit, and gives me layering options.

I suppose for me my ten essentials would
be:
1. Floor or ankle length skirt
2. Mid-length skirt
3. Long dress w/ short sleeves
4. long dress w/ long or 3/4 sleeves
5. Long sleeved top (V, square, sweetheart, or bateau neckline)
6. 3/4 sleeved top (V, square, sweetheart, or bateau neckline)
7. Wide-strapped or cap sleeved 'tank' top
8. Fitted jacket
9. long or 3/4 sleeved button-down shirt
10. Basic female T-shirt (one cut for the female form, so it's not
boxy)

But I'm beginning to think I might need to change that. Not sure.

I will always need a couple good pairs of dress pants, a black blazer, dark dressy jeans and a pair of kitten heels. Bright colored shirts/tanks/tees come and go but always work with what I wear.
