hey everyone,

i'm really new at the whole makeup and trying to look pretty thing. i wear absolutely no makeup on a day to day basis, but have put some on when it was a special occasion, only to epically fail. so i go get my makeup done by my friend or my best friend's sister helps me :]

some background:
i used to dance when i was little, so i had to use a lot of costume makeup for a very emphasized look. (my mama did my makeup) aka CHERRY RED LIPS, sparkles all over my face, thick THICK eyeliner with HUGE wings, and lots of blush. plus hair slicked back with a whole tube of gel.

this is what i look like with no makeup on

and here are some samples of what happens when i have it on. (i look so much better)
WebCam_20080315_0139.jpg

so i look alot better with makeup...
questions, what brands should i buy?
what kind of colours of what kind of makeup should i buy?
do i need brushes?
where can i learn to put it on properly?
i've been trying to learn by myself on youtube. hahaha, its going better than i expected it to.
ANY ADVICE AND HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!!!

update: so i've been doing my best at working at the cosmetics and beauty thing as opposed to just washing my face with hand soap, putting cream on and running out the door. i've also been practicing, looking and watching tutorials, and looking at face of the days when i take my breaks from studying (exam time).

i've bought new everything except the eyeliners and the lip gloss:
3 brushes: i'm pretty happy so far
NARS 13 (eyes large dome brush) not so sure about how to use such a large eye brush
NARS 14 (eye contour brush)
NARS 5 (eyebrows)

eyeshadows:
MAC woodwinked
MAC beautiful iris
MAC aquadisiac
MAC post haste
MAC esspresso

eyeliners:
waterproof maybelline liquid eyeline brown
waterproof maybelline liquid eyeliner black

lipgloss:
laura mercier cancun coral (raided my mum's makeup cup)
larua mercier pink beige (raided my mum's makeup cup)

pretty good start i think.

First things first: learn the basics
You can take makeup lessons at sephora, you can also have an appointment with a MUA at Mac which will also help you learn and pic makeup.

Brands:
Of course we all love MAC here, and I really recommend it. Just need to figure out which is your budget for makeup, compare, swatch and play with makeup at makeup stores to decide which one you like better.

Brushes:
You really need them! Start with something really basic like a couple of eyeshadow brushes (one bigger, one smaller), a blush brush and a powder brush. But fingers will help you a lot until you have a nice range of brushes

Don't go and buy the cheapest brushes because you'll soon realize that quality really makes a difference

they really worth the extra bucks.

Colors:
Eyeshadows: Start with neutrals: brownish, pinkish and a couple of more edgy colors to be able to play with, gold & silver... en (whatever you feel you'll enjoy playing with (and of course, you feel like going to actually wear it).
My first two mac shadows were woodwinked and satin taupe, I love them!
For brown eyes I also recommend purples

Lips: to start it's easier to go just lipglass (also start with natural looking pinks, and get a couple of brighter colors). Once you'll get used to apply makeup you can always buy lipsticks and lip liners

Blushes, powders, bronzers: this is just go and try whatever looks best on you

good to have one blush more pinkish and one more peachy

Well this was quite long xD I hope this helps

I think booking a makeup appointment with a beauty counter would be a great idea. Inglot are great if you have them near you, and they're the only brand I've been to, but I'm sure MAC and others would be fabulous. They'll teach you techniques and pick of colours that will suit you AND give you looks that will be easy to recreate at home. They cost money, but the session is almost always fully redeemable for product, so really, it's sorta free

I'd love to see you with winged eyeliner, that's an easy basic look to try out that won't take long but looks amazing. Just have fun experimenting with different colours and techniques and see what you like best! xsparkage on youtube is great, as are the lovely ladies in Specktra's very own Makeup Tutorials section. Hope that helped a little

You're cute with and without make-up.

I agree with Ikara, start out with neutrals. Brushes are essential and really make all the difference in looks. Visit some of the "what are your favourite brushes" threads to see which ones are most popular (of eyeshadow brushes, I've noticed the 239 for packing on color and 217 for blending are. That's where I started).

Visit the FOTD and Tutorial sections and try out some looks that you like. Don't be afraid to play with colors. Sometimes the scariest colours in the pan look the most beautiful.

Practice makes perfect.

Watching youtube tut's is an amazing way to learn makeup application, you're on the right track.

I personally love MAC.
Foundations: have 1 of the MAC girls match you up perfectly to yous skin tone. The lights in the store aren't accurate. Go outside in the natural light & judge that way, powder to set the foundation.

eyeshadow : personally, on you; I think amber lights, embark & expensive pink would look beautiful on you. with a black eyeliner & black mascara.

You can also goto MAC & get a makeover & let them try different looks on you. Ask for a mirror so you can watch the MUA applying your makeup.

LIPS : Since you don't wear a lot of makeup feel free to use a gloss. I think Love Nectar will look nice on you. It's a nice coral gloss.

Hope this helps & let me know what happens

Good Luck

Practice! That's the only way anyone ever gets good at it.

I'm a fan of Nars and Stila myself, and I've recently gotten into Laura Mercier.

Totally stick to neutrals and keep it simple. I've been wearing makeup since I was about 12, and the easiest for me is always to keep it simple. A shimmery wash of a neutral (I'm in love with Urban Decay's Blunt and Stila's Starlight), liner (I use MAC's Fluidline), mascara, some blush if I'm in the mood for it (Nars' Lovejoy), and a natural lipstick (Nars' Pigalle is my current favorite).

for vibrant colors... I like purples, teals, fucsia... (they also can be mixed together hehehe)
you should check FOTDs and TUTs to see which kind of colors other girls used and how they look once applied, this should help you a lot
winks.gif

Sometimes I buy colors after seeing how they look and how other girls mixed them (there's a lot of talented specktralities here!)

SPEND ON BRUSHES! good brushes help SO much they make even cheaper make up look that much better! get the 217, if you can only get one brush for eyes. it works amazingly well in the crease and fro blending. it applies pretty well too.

get a GOOD matte dark brown eyeshadow, it has many purposes, you can use it as a liner, a crease colour, and if used lightly, a lid colour. I suggest mac eyeshadows in the colours handwritten, espresso or brun, for dark browns.
Try honeylust or amberlights, for a goldish brown.
get a highligt colour like naked lunch or shroom.
and get a pink like paradisco or expensive pink!
these colours will look great in so many looks.

get a peachy pink blush, like pinch o peach.
