ive never tried mac or anything else from a department store and i want to so bad but im scared b/c ive heard from so many people about their bad experiences with their mua. im afraid of speding a bunch of money on someone who has no experience and no idea about their products. i was just wondering if anyone on here was from northern california and had a favorite mua. im willing to drive out of my way. i do go down to south every now and then (san jose) so if anyone has some recs that would be awesome!!! thanks so much!!!

Oh goodness I've been swindled more than once when it comes to Dept. store muas. I live in San Jose (if you ever come down here) so heres my advice if you come down to the dept. stores in this area:
Nordstrom Valley Fair: I haven't had a great exp. with any of the MUAs at any of the counters there. They are all very snobby, in my opinion.
Macy's Oakridge Mall: I love the Benefit ladies, the Clinique girls, and I looove the M.A.C muas there! They are so nice.
Macy's Valley Fair: Hit or miss. Half the counters are nice, but the other half is pushy and/or snobby.
I think it depends more on how you handle the situation. You can tell right away the attitude of a person, especially toward you. If they ignore you or act like you're not important, don't let them do your makeup. Follow your gut on this! I've been walked over by many muas just because I'm nice and didn't want to be mean. Also, try to do your homework before you go to a counter. If a mua knows you're not familiar with a line, it's easier for them to swindle you into falling for it. Sadly, you can't always go to a counter clueless, otherwise you're more prone to be taken advantage of.
Try and have a look in mind before hand, and have a strong will.
If you're willing to go to San Fran, try going to SonRisa! I'm not sure which counter she works at, but shes a MAC mua over there and has done fabulous FOTDs.
Hope this helped in some way!

hey! i'm from sf!! i have several recs.. the pro store on union street the ma's name is david.. he's soo nice and knows his sh*t. Though i haven't had a makeover done from him i will def go down there next time and have him do something nice on me. I usually go to the nordie's mac counter in stonestown (19th ave).. i'd recommend Diane Y. She's done my make up for several photoshoots and she's super friendly and perky! Here's the link to some of my pics.. her work is on my face. haha

also, i think it makes a difference depending what time you go b/c when the MAs are busy IMO they tend to rush and not do a good job on you.. and when all else fails, i freelance on the side, so if you'd like we can work something out! ok girl hth!

Honestly, the quality of mac sells itself without the MAs. I hope this website will help you locate a great artist and looking at FOTDs and MU chat will help you out also.

You can do it either way. If it's a busier location, you'll want to get an appt though, that way they're guarenteed to be able to do a full makeover on you. Also, check the store's purchase policy. Some require a minimum $ purchase, others a minimum item & so on. It's best not to be caught off guard when it comes to that.

The MA will do what you want. If you want specific colors-ask for them, but if you're open to whatever they want to put on you-tell them that too. When I used to get makeovers, I'd tell my MA to have fun & be creative. Since I knew how to do my own makeup the way I liked it, it was always fun to see what someone else would do.

Have fun...and of course, post pics!
