Hey!
I want to do some red strips on my hair, but I don't know how to do it.
I want to do it all by myself, because I went today to this place to get it done, but I didn't felt comfortable with the hairdresser , so I told him just to cut my hair and not dye it..
Does any of you do it all by yourself??
if so, which products do you use and how do you do it.
Thanks!

If your hair is dark, I've had good results with L'Oreal Color Rays. I've tried both the red and magenta ones and they've shown up really well. This would give you bright red though.

Otherwise, the best way to go is to get a cap for hair dying-- it has these little punch-out holes through which you pull whatever pieces of hair you'd like to dye. Then apply whatever boxed haircolor.
something like this: http://sallybeauty.com/shop/1480/342304

If you're really nervous, I'd recommend doing an application with temporary hair-dye first. It'll last for about a month and you can see how you like the red streaks.

Or try another salon?

I wouldn't try to do strips/highlights on your own, especially if you have to ask how. I would try to find another salon to do it, striping can be pretty difficult, I wouldn't risk it.

KAIA,

i recommend getting it done professionally. there's a couple way it can be done. first time i had red steaks/weaving done, they bleached my hair (i have jet black hair) and then dyed red over it. it was so pretty to see the red against my black hair. after that, i found hairdressers that can do a single process - red directly on my black hair so no need for bleach and it came out absolutely vibrant!

i like the weaving method - where they lay the red underneath so it peaks out of my hair - they didn't have to dye a lot, but the way the hair fell, it looked like a lot.

i used punky colors and manic panic hair dye form beauty stores like Sally's to maintain the color (the red does fade, especially since i like to wash my hair everyday)

if you aren't comfortable with that hairdresser, find one that you are comfortable with. when you go to "nicer" salons, if they don't do a good job, you can let them know you aren't happy - either that stylist will fix it, or a senior stylist will fix it. i had a haircut fixed once because the girl gave me a haircut nothing like the picture i showed her - the manager fixed it 2 days later and i loved it!

hth.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "strips", but if you're talking about (for example) 2" sections of hair being dyed red (larger sections than you would do for hilights), you can easily foil those. Generally it'd be easier just to do the top layer like that since doing the underside of the back of your head is a PITA.

I'm just wondering what kind of color you want to use. If that's you in your av it looks like you've got medium to dark brown hair, which you might need to lift before you dye otherwise you won't get the color you want. I mean, you can use Manic Panic dye (it's temp unless you bleach the hair first, then it'll last longer), but that'll last you maybe a month or so, in my experience.

I guess my best suggestion would find a different salon and get it done there. At least for the first time, because if they can do it without lifting your color then you should be able to upkeep at home. If they do need to lift it, then you know that's something that you can't do yourself.

I agree with 3jane. With L'oreal I dont think you will have to lighten your hair at all. I've tried these colors and boy they are very vibrant. Here's what I use:

And here are the swatches of color

For a developer I would recommend Ion sensitive scalp in a 30 V. You could go 40 if you want a really high lift but I think a 30 should do it. Talk to the professionals at Sallys if you have any questions- usually there's at least one who is very familiar with haircolor. I believe that the ratio should be 1:1, which means equal parts color to developer- read the box, it will give you the mixing ratio.

Hope i've been able to help...

Ps dont forget to pick up a conditioning treatment for after the processing. Ion color defense After color sealing treatment is great- especially if you dye your hair often. It comes in sample sizes too for about a buck.
Good luck,
Me
