Hey beautiful people..

I have a dilemma...I went on a mad spree on these liquid glitter eyeliners from Urban Decay and POP.. I mean like at least ten. Now the UD ones have an expiry date of 24months from opening & POP has 8months.

Im begining to regret buying so many (so many colours!)cos I dont think i'll be able to use them up within that time

Do you how long they will last if I keep them unopened..they'll dry out right??
Or any ideas how I can 'wet' the glitters again if they do dry up, providing it's safe!

I've had an Urban Decay heavy metal glitter liner for a while now, and it's still fine. They shouldn't dry up if you close them super tight, at least not for a very long time. Keeping them closed really tight should also help them last longer...not forver, but still. Also, chances are the ingredients will just go rancid before they dry up completely, and then you just shouldn't use them. But in the off chance they dry up, try adding a little mixing medium to them. In fact, some companies such as Make Up For Ever and MAC make mixing mediums specifically for transforming glitters and powders into liner, so if it's dried up to the point where it's just loose sparkles, you can give that a try. Have fun with your liner, I LOVE glitter liner sooo much!

I've never heard of them having an "expiration date" They have a shelf life, of course, but don't feel like you have to hurry up and use them or throw them away.

When a cosmetic item has an expiration date on it, it's actually so that the retailer knows to get rid of it. The consumer still has a year from that date to use it. Rule of thumb for most products (creamy ones and those with SPF) is two years from when you've opened it, unless you've opened it past the sell-by date, then one year.

The guy at UD just showed me this "24M" print on the packaging and said I need to throw it away after 24 months of opening it.
Girls the POP ones are just as awesome as the UD ones & have them in many more colours-check them out

So yeah, the 24 months thing is a general guideline...it's not like, in exactly two years to the day, this eyeliner will go rancid. It's also going to depend on how much you use it and where you store it.

So there are a few things you can do to help prolong the life of your eyeliner. Obviously, make sure you close them up as tight as you can without breaking the cap off after every time you use it, and don't just test a little patch to see how pretty it is. I used to do that with my glitter liners...I wore them so seldom but I love how pretty they are, so I'd paint a little line on my hand and just gawk at it all day (or until I washed my hands...which I assume you was not once a day as I just implied). Everytime you touch the applicator to anything, it's going to pick up bacteria, which is never good. Bacteria up in your liner can reduce the shelf life, so resist the urge to play with it unless you actually wanna wear it. Also, I like to store my eyeliner in a cool, dry place. Not necessarily a fridge (though I've heard of people doing this, I'm not sure how much good it actually does), but we have a finished basement so I just keep my make-up in the downstairs bathroom. It's usually pretty cold down there, and we have this weird sub-basement thing (like, you go down to the basement, then down some more steps and there's another basement), so there are no windows. I once left my favourite lipgloss, this really beautiful purplish-pinkish-blue holographic Dior lipgloss, on my dresser (which gets a few hours of direct sun every day), and it went rancid in just a few weeks after I bought it. Lipgloss usually lasts about 2 years as well, but I'm not saying it's the same as liquid liner, but it just goes to show how big an impact somethin like sunlight can have on cosmetics.

So hopefully you found that useful...I had to learn the hard way

Aaw Amaranth, ur so sweet, been incredibly helpful thanks!! LOL @ drawind on your hand to look how pretty it is. So funny I actually did that with my blue one last night..eeek!! Won't do it anymore.

I wore my 'peacock' colour one yesterday & the gold one to day, I've had so many compliments =o) Bit worried now cos my studio flat is always quite warm...maybe I'll try & store them in the fridge???! I dont know why im thinking it might dry them out doing that tho. What to do??

Hehe, glad to help! And you see?! It's so tempting! They're so beautiful!

And I can't say one way or another what putting them in the fridge will do to them, since I've never tried it. But it must be ok, since apparently THESE are being made:

The things some people come up with. But as long as your flat isn't completely baking hot it should be ok, it's just that both moisture and heat are both going to encourage growth in whatever bacteria worked its way into your liner.

Oh man, I seriously love these. I first bought one by Caboodles called "wow" and got so depressed when the brand was discontinued....anyway what I did (this is how much I loved it) I broke the bottle, scraped the remaining hard to get product into a new container and added mixing medium to it. After letting it sit the next night I had about another month or two of applications. If you don't want to spend the money on the mixing medium than just put three parts water to one part glycerine and its basically the same thing. The mixing medium makes it liquidy again.

As far as expiring, I know this is terrible...but I use things up untill there gone nomatter how long it takes me unless they smell bad or change color and Ive never gotten any sort of infections. With the exception of mascara because that has given me problems before after it expired.
