I'm not a parent myself, but I grew up on a farm so I've pretty much always known. I remember being little and being taught that beef is cow and pork is pig, etc. I personally think the younger the child is the easier it is to assimilate. After all, it's perfectly natural and I think if you present it in that way it's easier for the child to handle. The longer you wait the bigger a deal it will become. Good luck.

My kids have always known. They know bacon comes from pigs, and hamburger comes from cow, and chicken is chicken.

They haven't been bothered yet, but then, we don't eat anything we named.

Lol, when I was younger I asked my parents if chicken actually came from chickens, and they told me no because otherwise I would NOT have eaten it. I still don't understand why I believed them. Why else would it be called chicken...? lol

ok so i was always aware of what was going on when i was younger, i had a general idea that meat came from animals from farms.

my sister however didnt seem to grasp the concept, so when she found out, well lets just say she didnt take it so well

she spent a whole month guarding the family dog because she thought we would eat the animal

I think I always did know that meat came from animals, just natural instincts.
But I remember my mum telling me of an incident when I was eating dinner with my mum and dad, and being my dad (who doesn't think before he says) came out with "That fish you're eating is like the fish in our fish tank" etc and all I came out with was "Oh well. Poor fish" and carried on eating, LOL!
