I haven't had a chance to post about my demo, but here it is... this took place a week ago....
I arrived with my model, my mom.. .about an hour ahead of schedule. The job fair was located in an office building about an hour north of my city. I wanted to leave with plenty of time ahead since the freeways to get to the location are hellacious. So my mom and I got there, strolled on up to the floor where we were supposed to meet and I ran into the MAC recruiter who asked us if we were looking for something. I told her yes, I was there for the job fair and she said “Wow, you’re early! We won’t get started until 11. Why don’t you guys go grab some Starbucks downstairs?” So I thought to myself cool, I was the first one there, and an hour early to boot. I didn’t want to take any chances with traffic/car accidents/detours, etc.
At around 10:40 my mom and I made our way up to the job fair location once again. This time there was a waiting room full of applicants and models. It was sooooo quiet, everyone was sizing each other up. I felt super self conscious and for the first time, nervous. The apprehension in that little waiting room was palpable.
At 11 the MAC recruiter, and regional staff led us into the big conference room. They told us to take a seat wherever there was a mirror. I found my seat, noticed there were brushes and a few products laid out so that 2 people could share 1 set of products/brushes. They then introduced themselves, there were about 4 managers, a few other employees there, and the MAC recruiter. They let us know this would be the oral group interview, and our models remained outside. They went around and asked everyone to introduce themselves and what locations they would like to work, and what type of position (PT, FT, Freelance). They asked everyone why they wanted to work for MAC, one by one. Mostly every person said they wanted to work for MAC because of the quality of the products, and their image. When they came around and it was my turn to answer, I said I wanted to work for MAC because I believe wholeheartedly in their mantra... I also said I admired them because of their contributions of giving back to the community, highlighting the Viva Glam/MAC AIDS Fund, as well as other programs such as B2M. They also asked us each what our favorite MAC product was.
The managers then asked questions to the whole group, and this is where you need to speak up. They meticulously took notes on who said what. They asked what do you think it takes to be a MAC artist, and then they went on to define what a MAC artist should be. They asked us if we knew what AUS meant as well. I made sure to be engaging and raised my hand as much as I could.
After the oral interview our models were brought back in, and sat in front of us. They then asked us to move one step to the side, and there was a collective groan…lol. The ol’ switcheroo… I thought this might happen, so I wasn’t flustered. I was also fortunate to have a model with great features, beautiful skin and big eyes. I introduced myself to her and she looked nervous!!! She had this look on her face like I-don’t-know-what-the-hell-you’re-going-to-do-to-me-but-please-make-me-look-pretty! The managers then gave us this scenario, our models were going out to a holiday party, so they wanted to look very glamorous… we were to use some of the products laid out for us… 2 (one of them vanilla) pigments, a blush, an eyeshadow, the brushes at my station were the 134, 190, 219, 209, 275, 212, 129. She then asked us to ask our models what features where their favorites, and what they would like to be played up. My model said her eyes. The manager then gave us 5 minutes to grab all the products we wanted to use. The only “rule” was that we HAD to use one of the pigments (one was Vanilla, the other a deep brown coppery color… I didn’t pay attention to it because I had already made up my mind and I was going for the Vanilla pig.) So it was game on, and man it was chaos trying to find my products. There were maybe 11 or 12 girls trying to all get eyeshadows, skincare, foundation, lip products, mascara, liners, petri dishes, sponges, etc…. I grabbed Untitled paint, Da Bling, Nocturnelle, Macroviolet f/l, Dervish l/l, Sweetie l/s, Viva Glam VI l/g, Strobe Cream, MSF natural in medium, Mineralize Satinfinish fdtn, every single blush I wanted to use was gone so I just hastily grabbed Hushabye. We were then told we had 25 minutes to complete our makeovers. My mind was racing, I didn’t have time to pick up any brow products, or mascara. I came back to my station and immediately started prepping my model’s skin with MAC wipes, spritzed some Fix+ I borrowed from my neighbor, and then started applying the strobe cream with the 190. I thoroughly explained things as I went along. I let my model know while the moisturizer sank into her skin that I was going to get started on her eyes. I used the 275 to apply the paint, I then applied Da Bling all over the lid, Vanilla pig. in the inner tearducts, Nocturnelle in the crease, and Macrovoilet in the outer < to define the crease with the 224. All of the girls were borrowing brushes and products from each other. I asked the girl next to me for the 224, she asked me for my 219, etc… My model was diggin it. I cleaned up any fallout with a MAC wipe, got to work on her foundation with the 190. I set it with the 129 and MSF natural, applied Hushabye very lightly to the apples of her cheeks, and lined her lips with Dervish. It was at this point the manager announced that we had 4 minutes to complete our look! I stayed calm, finished filling in her lips with Sweetie, topped it off with Viva Glam VI l/g. I asked the girl next to me if I could borrow her Zoomlash and she said sure, so I applied 2 coats, then highlighted her face with some Vanilla pigment, also using some for the brow bone highlight….and I was finished just on time.
The managers then came around to each of us to critique us. The recruiter came over and asked what was on my model’s eyes, I told her and she then asked me to rate my makeover 1-10. I said 6, I knew I could do better, add eyeliner, define her brows a little bit, blend a little bit better…but that I was pleased overall and my model loved it. She then asked if she could make one suggestion, and of course I said yes! She said Vanilla pig. was too reflective for a brow highlight, so she toned it down with a matte cream colored e/s that was on the table (the name escapes me right now). I agreed, and then added in that Brule would have probably been a better choice and she agreed wholeheartedly. She blended a little more Nocturnelle, and then she was done. After she was done with the one eye, she handed me the 224 and told me to even out her other eye.
I felt pretty good about my demo... I didn't get a lot of criticism, others in the room did. The not so good, my station was a MESS! I had read up on all the sanitation procedures on Specktra, but in that high pressure situation with all those people doing their demos, it literally flew out the window. I wiped down powder products, used sponges, petri dishes, etc... My station though, was a disaster....the recruiter let me know that this was not okay, so I cleaned it up ASAP! Lol, but she was totally cool and sweet about it.
After the demo portion, they let told us to give them a week and they would be contacting us. They said we were then free to go. I cleaned up some more, and my model came back to me before she walked out the door, gave me a hug, said she loved what I did, and wished me good luck
So it's been about a week now, and I recieved a call from the MAC recruiter today... She said she wanted to just follow up on the location I wanted as well as part time or fulltime... She also ruled out any freelancing for me because at the moment I am employed by a sister company. So... I'm getting a little discouraged...
She said she will contact me again in the next few days and that they have yet to make any final decisions. I said okay, that I would be on pins and needles until then... lol.
So there ya go... I really hope for good news, I just don't know what to make of things right now...
