Do you know her taste in colors? Shadows and lipsticks are good, if you do. When I quit my job at Nordstrom, though, my co-workers gave me a $50 MAC card and I bought brushes. I specifically wanted something I could always see so I could remember my girls giving me such a fab gift.

Happy B-day to your sister, hope she has a great one!
What is her skintone? And what kinds of things does she already have from MAC - as well as color preferences.

I'd definitely get her a lippie (hug me, if she doesn't already have it - it's my fav pinky nude and an extremely versatile shade)

How about brushes? try the 187..
I would suggest more, but let me know in more detail what you think she would enjoy

MAC is love

I think brushes are super important in starting a makeup kit b/c if you have crappy brushes...your makeup can reflect that. I would give her an e/s brush, an e/s or 2, & a lipgloss or something else you think she would love. HTH!

I support the Brushes suggestion. Colors are a personal choice and some people may be turned off by the price of MAC brushes and opt not to buy them which is a huge mistake. Brushes are our friends til the end!!

I agree with the bush idea. However, if you are unsure buy her a MAC gift card so that she can choose her own items.

On top of all that, you can press a couple of mac piggies and put them into a mac quad for fairly cheap, to add to the already wonderful pressie of a brush XD

Check out the one I just gave my friend for her birthday!!

I agree, love my 187 !!
If you have one in the neighbourhood check out a duty-free shop they sell this great SE brush sets. The face set one has 4 brushes and a back and cost me only 78$ (australian) .
It has :
190SE Foundation Brush , 187SE Duo fibre brush, 168SE Angled contour brush , 129SE Powder/Blush brush

And it comes in a make-up bag!!
Or if you don't have one close to you maybe you can find this on-line?

i've been advised by a lot of MAC MAs that the single brushes are better quality than the travel sets.....and someone on the boards here ditto that.

i would recommend 1 or 2 brushes (does she have any brushes at all? if so, add ones that she doesn't has or at least 1 that is a staple brush she can replace with this better one that the others above have recommended). then maybe a couple eyeshadows (a quad maybe) so she can play with the brush and have new colors to try.

as my collection grows, i prefer pro pans and the 15 pan palette (so much easier to travel with than all the little pots) PLUS, i just found out that those pans work for b2m! so if you do a refillable compact quad, let her know those pans work for b2m when they're empty.

10 years so a friend told me about b2m (and darn, i was throwing out my lipsticks when they emptied).

what a nice birthday for her (btw, when i was in school, my sisters use to get me the holiday sets for my birthday/christmas since i was too poor to buy MAC makeup.....i don't think they have any holiday sets now, but i could be wrong)

Choice of colours is quite personal, so I would go for brushes, say 266, 224, 219, 187, 182, just to name a few of the basics..... never have enough.
A retractable lip brush is nice too (as lip brush and concealer brush, and keep in makeup bag ! ! ! )
