To Depot or Not to Depot - That is the Question

Do you depot your shadows, or do you like to leave them in individual packaging? Personally, I just started depotting and bought my first 15 pan palettes and even a few pan shadows, and I like it, but I am going to miss my individual shadows- I have over 100 individuals!

What do you think are pros/cons to depotting?

Pros for me are:
-Cost (if you buy in pan) is less
-Saves storage space
-Great for travel, so they're all in one place
-B2M!

Cons:
-The risk of breaking shadows during depot
-Having to carry around a huge palette when you just want one color

I didn't get into depotting until the middle of this year. I used to have a whole bunch of single shadows. While it was fun to spread them all out and look at them, it was a hassle to go back and forth or keep reaching when I was in "make up mode" LOL So I learned how to depot from watching various tutorials. I'm so glad that I did it! My shadows are all color coordinated and such, everything is right in one spot, where I need it to be. I honestly don't see any cons to depotting, but that's me.

Don't forget that you can get empty quad palettes too so you don't have to carry a 15 palette with you.

I'd say that you should depot when you definitely have the magnets in your possession and have had practice depotting either empty shadows or non LE ones. Only when you get good at it should you consider depotting LE shadows.

Good luck!

I buy Pro Pans when possible...But LE come in pots only...and I always depot...Pots take up too much space and I like looking at them more than one at a time.

I also keep empty quads to put mine in when I travel...Or I take the LE quad palettes like Tempting etc....

Definitely depot ... I have five palettes and at this point am completely lacking in storage space were I to leave them in the pots. I think the invention of the MAC palette was ingenious!

100 individuals gets you over 16 free shadows, lipsticks or glosses at the MAC or Pro stores

Once you depot, you'll never go back.

In my humble opinion, of course. For me, the pros far outweigh any cons.

Yea I was really hesitant at first, but I had some possibly fake e/s that I got on eBay so I thought it would be a good idea to find out if they were...sure enough they were fake, but the best part was learning that depotting was not hard at all! I just need to get some magnets before I go at my entire collection...

I was thinking this too, but the thing is there is only a counter near me, so I'd have to mail them to my sister b/c I don't really want lippies, but I'd love me some eyeshadows!

Mail them to somebody.....If you lived closer to me I would gladly take them for you...send them in a box to someone and just pay the shipping for your free shadows...Which will also be 16 more for you to depot and get more with

^^ I better start getting busy with the depotting! Because that's like 18, after depotting the 16!

My sisters live in the east and I've got a friend in Denver (who actually works for MAC but at a counter) and so I could easily get one of them to take em in for me. I might not depot the special packaging ones like NSF or Lure though.

One thing though: why aren't the pans sold on maccosmetics.com, but they're available in freestanding stores??

I like to depot because it is easier to think of different color combinations to try when they are all together. I can't find as much inspiration in the individual shadows.

Its silly..but they are available at macpro.com...you can't order ONLINE at macpro unless you have a pro card, but you can do an order over the phone with MAC PRO..why not? Save a couple bucks per shadow..or phone your nearest MAC store and they usually don't have problems doing orders over the phone

So I say depot, depot, depot!

I just started depotting last night and so far I like it. I do like having my shadows in pots so I don't think that I will end up depotting all of my shadows but it was fun to just actually successfully depot for the first time. Plus now I have a few sets of B2M empties to use for BBR.

I'm depotting fan for shadows AND blushes. I have three empty quads for travel purposes. Also, if you pop the insert that sections of the circles for the pans from the quad, it will fit a blush (and a shadow, too). Super handy.

I'm on my seventh palette now, and there is NO WAY I could deal with all those pots. Also, although it's nice in theory to keep the special packaging shadows in their pots, I found that I never ended up using them because I'd always go for my palettes. Just a thought!

I do depot all of my shadows except the ones in special packaging. Also because sometimes I dont want to carry the 15 slot palette in my kit or if im traveling I have a couple empty quads that I will carry to save space it works out nicely for me. If only abby and I had more then a counter so we could get eyeshadows and not just L/S I would be a happier camper!

Hey! Good to see you again!

I wish we had a store so bad, I didn't realize how much better they are til I went to like 5 different ones during Christmas vacation! Sigh...

That definitely is something to think about. I think my NSF colors would look great in a palette, I'm just so damn sentimental about the packaging - those, along with Barbie, McQueen, Ungaro, etc. I feel bad ditching the packaging but I definitely want to get some use out of the LE shadows.

i got a question for you ladies, when you e/s are in the pallettes and you drop your pallette does it still somewhat protect the e/s from breaking or cracking? like with my e/s pots I've dropped a couple (they even bounced!) and my e/s did not crack.

Also how would you suggest to do an e/s pallette? by color? by favourite e/s? by use?

I've never depotted, and am considering for space's sake and B2M...

It took me a while until I took the plunge into depotting - now I buy only pro pans and depot all of my LE eyeshadows. It saves so much time and space! I agree with the rest of the girls - keep a quad for travelling - this shouldn't keep you from depotting.

Because I am a KLUTZ I am keeping them in pots. I'm serious, i am scared I would BREAK them in a palate. 15 shadows at once! I have dropped the pots multiple times and they survive. I like knowing they're that protected and that if they DO break that is only one, not 15... ~L~

And for me storage is not an issue and I don't travel a whole lot, but if I do, honestly I like that I can grab 6 shadows throw them in ziplock bag and go. As opposed to needing to re-organize a palate.

Who knows in time maybe, I would, but I can not see me EVER depotting my lipsticks. I love the bullets FAR too much!
