Whats Depotting and Whats it all about?

I'm kinda new to this, but I've never depotted anything in my life. I dont know exactly what it means or whats it all about. It'll be great if you guys could tell me and explain. Thanks

ALSO... Why do people buy stuff in Pans instead of the whole thing? What the hell do you do with the pan? I'm thinking perhaps an empty compact? But what about the sizes? How do you find a compact thats gonna fit into the pan perfectly? Theres many different sizes of pans is there? Ugh. Its confusing.

I'm new to Mac but this is what I know so far.

You buy eyeshadow in pots at counters, freestanding stores and pro stores (only 1 in London in the UK) sell pans. You can buy the empty palettes to put the pans in at freestanding stores or the pro store. Lots of people like to depot (ie take the pan out of the plastic pot) so they can put them in palettes to make storage easier.

I know the palettes come in 4 or 15 spaces but not sure what the other sizes are, they also sell empty blush palettes.

I depotted my first Mac e/s last weekend using a hair straightener, it was so easy.

Once you have 6 empty e/s pots (or any other empty) you can take it to Mac for their Back2Mac recycling programme, which means you get to choose a lipstick for free (apart from the Viva Glam range)
