SHAZAAM!! HERE I AM!!!!

Long day over here, but yes indeedie…I spent hours fooling around with this collection. My MA is so great - he told me he gets more out of me trying everything on than when he tests stuff out himself.

Anyhow, I'm not going to beat around the bush. This collection is very weird. It's not the instant home run "OMG everything is perfect" collection like some Mineralize ones from the past few years, but there are some real gems mixed in with some products that are kind of off-the-wall. Plus, some things you would think would make sense for one skin color or the other don't always work out that way, so everyone, especially darker skin tones, need to proceed with caution and seriously try things in person first.

First off, the Skin Finishes. Wow, at first I was kind of shocked. I tried them on at first with standard 129s and 116s and holy crap SO METALLIC - shockingly metallic. BUT, it was a tough call - they've definitely reformulated yet again and this time you got the mega-metallicness but the pores were NOT emphasized. They don't feel heavy on the skin like the old metallic MSFs like Petticoat do - they felt totally light and weightless and like I was saying, the pores weren't emphasized. Total shocker considering the drastic metallic frostiness. There was zero glitter, at least, but I was just saying "damn…I dunno about this….". THEN, I tried a 188 - that applied them a little better, but still so metallic. I was really on the fence. FINALLY I used the new 159 to apply them, and then it all came together at last. That brush is the m-f-ing bomb!!! It's a fabulous brush and I am seriously considering buying 2, which I never do. It is the perfect shape and size to get just the right swipe of highlight perfectly right on the top of the cheekbones and it made the MSFs apply GORGEOUSLY!!

So in other words, if you're interested in any of the MSFs, you're pretty much going to need the 159. I think even the 131 is going to be too big and too flat around the belly and some other highlighter brushes might be the right size but also be a little too flat. The white hairs on the 159 are shaped really well too - they're short enough so they smudge your swipe well, but not so long that they overblend. I don't think I've seen a product from MAC that was so fussy that you got a weird effect unless you used one single brush only. Obviously, if you love an ultra-metallic effect, you could use other brushes, but for my tastes, the difference between the 159 and the other brushes I tried was just too dramatic. It made the MSFs go from WTF
hmm.gif
to OMG
eyelove.gif

Now here's the other thing about these MSFs (and the blushes but a little less so). The high sheen on these is cool-toned. They're not using gold sheen, they use sort of silver/white/clear. This is going to be an issue for dark skins. You know me; I feel like it's wrong to assume one color or another is or isn't for dark skin or light skin, but in this case, the whitish pearl here is going to be a very specific look on dark skin. You are going to be willing to have a metallic effect that is going to look even more dramatic due to the contrast on the skin. Adored, in particular, is very pale. On me it looked very nice - the coral in it worked extremely well with my sallow undertones, but it's gonna be ashy on dark skin - I don't think there's going to be a way around it. Rio may be the easiest one to deal with with any skin tone, as it has a bright light pink sheen to it, which is quite light but with more pink highlight than white or silver and the brown part is quite neutral and almost invisible. Lust is quite similar to Rio, but not as bright. It's the closest one to Semi-Precious Crystal Pink, but not as greyed out. All of these MSFs have an unusual effect once you get the application down right - from one angle it will look like you don't have anything on and then when the light hits just right, MEGA-METALLIC SHEEN. If you apply a single swipe, this effect will be quite translucent and it's actually awfully pretty and flattering, due to the light texture and the lack of pore emphasis. You can build the colors quite noticeable with a second layer, but of course then you have more metallicness too. These are not what I'd consider all-year-round MSFs - they're very very very summery. If I would use them at other times of the year, it'd be for nighttime dress up makeup for sure.

Another thing about the MSFs and the blushes too. They all looked much better when they had a chance to melt into the skin a bit. I'd say the best thing would be to apply a light layer of either the MB or the MSF and then wait a few minutes to see if you actually need more or if you need to go back and buff it in more. Both the blushes and MSFs would benefit from a nice finishing stroke of a favorite huge puffy brush or kabuki. My split fiber kabuki is gonna get a workout with these for sure. I'll continue on more about the blushes in another post, but bear all these application ideas in mind, because otherwise, they may seem kind of weird. This is a very strange collection!!!
Thank you so much Liba :)).....Did you get to try out Midnight Mambo, and did you get a release date? (meaning did they move it up?)

So, the blushes are also a little bit different and offbeat on first look too.

Exotic Ember: OK this is a very deceptive color. It might seem like the no-brainer color for the darker skinned folks out there but beware. My MA was telling me he tried it out on a couple of darker skins and it went ashy and while I was there checking everything out, one of the MAs who I love stopped to take a look too - she's very dark, probably NW50, and it went ashy on her too. The orange part has got a white base hiding in it and it's just a problematic shade. Meanwhile on my NC15 skin, it looked awesome - like everything I wanted Earthshine to be on me but wasn't. It was a warm brown with an orange almost-duochrome effect and really accentuated my bone structure. Earthshine, by contrast, looked muddy on me, just dirty looking and flat in comparison. The finish on these blushes are a little more satin than the ones from Apres Chic, which didn't appear glittery but in certain lights were quite sparkly unless you buffed them in a bit. These new ones will be less sparkly, but they do have a noticeable sheen and will still get a little sparkly in direct sunlight. I don't find this a problem, because it does result in a radiant effect, but for the sparkle-o-phobes out there, it's something to be aware of.

So to talk more about the sheen - you really can get a two-tone effect with all of these blushes. With Simmer, when you swirl it all together, the color showed quite berry on me. It's not like Ring of Saturn, which is much browner, even though it sort of looks like it. Anyhow, it looked like a berry color, but when the light hit it, you would see this pale apricot highlight that was magnificent. I love Simmer - it looks like the most normal of all the blushes but when worn, it's the most unusual. I'm not sure how this is going to translate on darker skins, but my guess is it's going to be fine, and not so ashy. It's less shimmery than Exotic Ember by a bit.

Sweet Samba is gorgeous too. It's better to swirl this one together, as the pink was a bit stiff on its own, but mingled with the beige, the texture became really smooth, buttery and blendable. If you have Hot Nights, you could consider skipping Sweet Samba, but SS does have that beautiful MB quality of melding with your bare skin in this lovely transparent way. It almost looks like a cheek tint or stain, rather than being a powder product. There are cool, white sheeny shimmers in the beige on this one, so for very dark skin, you might need to swirl hunt for one without too much brown. For pale and medium skin tones, the brown is a great addition to the hot pink, so I for one am going to look for one with plenty of beige. It softens the pink in just the right way and you get a bit of the beige as a highlight sheen when the light hits it, just like Simmer and Exotic Ember, to a lesser extent.

All the blushes look even nicer with the MSFs on top, since the MSFs sort of unite the very noticeable two-tone quality of the blushes under a single roof, so to speak. Just don't put those darn MSFs all over the whole cheek or they will overwhelm the less metallic blushes.

Let's put it this way - when I first tried everything on, I was ready to skip it ALL. But after a few hours of playing and experimenting, I got the drift of what was going on and am now getting all the blushes and MSFs. I still think these will be for the summer and early fall only, but unlike last year's collection, you don't need a tan to really rock everything. I didn't let myself get tanned this year and yet everything in this collection looks great.
Liba,

Thank you so very much for all of your input on this collection. I was going to totally pass on this whole collection until I saw your remarks. You sound like you have a really great eye for color. May I pick your brain for a moment? I am an NC37. I have a smaller face, so that can make it a little tricky, especially with the blush and highlighter. There is just not that much space. What would you recommend for the MSF and blush?

Thanks so much!

Just received our shipment of it this week, the #159 is $35 :)
That's what i was thinking. :nods:
Thanks for the review, Liba! This collection is a skip for me now. Not a fan of white/silvery pearl. And Rio doesn't sound as bronze as I wanted. More to spend on Riri, though.
Yup. Just the brush (and BUs) for me. If it was gold instead of silver, it'd be a whole other story!

Thank you so much liba for your very detailed thoughts on this collection. Im thinking about only getting the 159 brush x2 and maybe passing on everything else. Beforehand I already knew I was passing on the eyeshadows and blushes but I was considering all the MSFs. I still would like to see a swatch of Rio to make my finally decision. But if I can get away with just getting the brush then I will be a happy camper . .Lol !!!

I've got the small face thing too. You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that 159 brush. My cheekbones are high but rather flat and my cheeks are small and it targeted them perfectly. As for the MSFs, you could definitely do Rio and Lust and maybe even Adored if you don't mind a very strong contrast to your highlighter, but I wouldn't use these MSFs as a blush or an all-over highlighter or powder unless you are ready to look like a metallic disco lady. I guess I got shocked by this collection because MAC's collections were getting softer and more natural looking, especially in the face powder and blush department and BOOM, these products are much more fantasy-oriented. It's good to know that going in.

As for blushes for you, you might be able to get away with all 3 of them. If you have to make a short list, Sweet Samba or Simmer would be the safer bets. I don't even understand what's up with Exotic Ember. I figure the white undertone on that is due to the minerals they make the blush itself out of, rather than just the color mix. I don't think it'll be too white for you if you find one with plenty of the brown in it, but be aware that the brown part is much more sparkly than the orange part on that one.

Midnight Mambo is not sheer at all! In fact, it looks very nice, but it's not a particularly original MAC color. If you've missed the other magenta lipsticks this year, it's definitely worth a spin. One thing about it - when the Mineralize lipsticks came out, I felt like I didn't care for the bright colors in the formula…like they looked too greasy or something (I loooooved the nude colors though). However, Midnight Mambo doesn't have that problem. It looks moist but not oily. But, seriously, if you already bought FMP, or have Seductive Intent, I don't think you really need this one too, unless you need all magentas in the universe. It looked good on me, but I'm going to actually pass. If I buy another Mineralize lipstick, it'll probably be Luxe Naturale, but for now I'm happy with my Posh Tone and leaving it at that. I do think the formula is worth the money, but I wished they'd made MM a little more original. It ain't blue or red leaning, its just your straight ahead all-year-round magenta.

No! It's got brown tones influencing the color, but it doesn't look brown - it looks like a dusty pink, rather than a bright Barbie pink. I just mean toned-down and not bright when I say dirty. If it looked like you'd put dirt on your face, I'd call it muddy (oh semantics!)

Rio is seriously not bronze - I'd call it rose bronze, with the emphasis on the rose, not the bronze.

Fortunately for me, I'm skipping Riri because I've banned myself from buying makeup without trying it in person first. If the colors come back in the next Riri collection, then that will be good enough for me.

YES THEY MOVED THE DATE UP A WEEK. I am assuming this is going to be at all stores and counters, not just my store, but I didn't ask about that. My MA told me that July 4 and New Year's Day are their two slowest days of the whole year, so I guess that was the reasoning behind moving the date forward.

Ok, edited b/c quoting on my phone doesn't work for me. LOL
I have had that happen with the cremesheens, but not the other glosses.  I do like how the cremesheens feel, but they mess up my lippy by:  1) bleeding, 2) making my LOTD (lip of the day) fall apart.  Instead on making a cohesive layered lippy, it tends to destroy the entire lippy within a very short time.  The only way I can imagine using the cremesheens, would be to use them only by themselves.  Then plan on having it really handy, because I'm going to have to reapply it constantly throughout the day.  It seems to disappear in the blink of an eye. :(
This happens to me as well.

I agree, I found out with Superb EDSF, I don't like silver sheens on me. It's pretty, but it's not the best choice.

Well, I have FMP so I can skip MM. Just looks like the brush, one or two CSG, and all of the l/l for me!

Liba,

Thanks so much for all of your help. I bet I'll really love that 159 brush a whole lot. It makes it tricky when you have to be so very careful with the placement. There isn't room for error at all! Nothing worse than when you take so much time and care with all of the previous steps, to have it ruined at the blush phase. That drives me crazy! I am attaching a picture of me in my purple glasses to give you an idea of my coloring and face shape. If I had to narrow it down to one MSF and one blush (2 at the very most), which would you pick? Thanks again so very much. I have a feeling that 159 brush is going to be invaluable!

Thank you for the reviews liba.

I'm kind of glad that they moved the date up since I will be in Texas during that time and over an hour away from a MAC store.
