Alright so we all love buffing but...

I keep wondering if I'm sweeping stuff in to clog my pores as opposed to the 'traditional' blend towards your jaw and hairline. What's your take on it?

I don't think buffing actually forces the product any further into the skin because there is only so much your skin can absorb before it becomes saturated. If anything, I'd say it's better because if I take my time to buff the product in, I use less, so you're putting less into your skin but I'm no expert

If you're buffing to the extent that the product sinks into your pores, you're buffing way too hard. Buffing is just a polishing action, not a grinding action. It doesn't push product any further into your pores than applying with a brush or your fingers.
