Can you really damage your skin with a skincare tool??

I tend to get a lot of whiteheads on my cheeks, nose and chin. It took me a while to figure out how to deal with them and I tried multiple products as well as a skincare tool to extract them before learning how to handle them. Currently I get rid of them with facial scrubs and weekly steaming but every now and then if I don't have time for steaming before and event etc I use the skincare tool. BUT I keep reading that using a skincare tool can cause damage to your skin. What kind of damage exactly? Is it more a question of how careful/gentle you are when you use it or should I toss mine now before I regret it?

TIA

Just want to say that I have the same problem with whiteheads and use the loop extractor to remove them, and I am very interested in replies to this thread, especially alternative ways to handle them. Thanks.
