Hello, I'm new to Mac, I've only got a few Mac items, like Studio Fix & some lip glosses. I want to start a collection but I don't know where to start, I have $700 and I'm wondering if that's enough for the basics? What could I get with that amount? Any help will be greatly appreciated

$700 is a great amount! Here's what I'd get (in shades/colours that suit your skintone, with at least 1 neutral and 1 funky vibrant colour for each m/u item like lipstick or eyeshadow or whatever)

and you can either buy e/s and blush pans and put them in palettes (which you can also buy) or you can buy pots and then depot them and B2M the containers for more makeup...

brushes:
187
192 if you like cream blushes
217
242
263/266/208 or 209 -> an eyeliner brush of your choice

i also like the 275 eye brush and the 129 blush brush

face:
blot powder
your choice of foundation type/tinted moisturizer
your choice of concealer type

for eyes:

any of the veluxe pearls
fluidlines (blacktrack and one other)
i also love mac's pencil liners and use them a lot - both powerpoints and kohls.
try to get the holiday pigment vials if you want to play with pigments, and also get water based mixing medium

for cheeks:

sheertone shimmer blushes are wonderful
i like the irridiscent pressed powder highlighters too

for lips, in colours that look hot on you:

lipglass,
lustreglass,
lipgelees,
tinted lip conditioner
lipstick (i like lustres, amplified creme and satin formulas)

hope this helps

let me tell you some of the things i can't live without....then when you go to the counter make sure you play around with them and buy them if you like

-217 brush <- i HIGHLY recommend this, its so soft and applies everything great

-studio finish concealer (or if a different concealer works better for you, then go for it)
smiles.gif

-fix+

-a GOOD EYESHADOW BASE..this will make a world of difference!
smiles.gif
i use bare canvas paint; the shadesticks work better for some people

-prep+prime lash

-prep+prime face

-blacktrack fluidline (and 266 brush for it)

those are the basics that i think help every collection ... here are some things that are my cant-live-without-colors, but of course your coloring (or color choices) may be different

-bountiful plushglass
eyelove.gif

-coppering eyeshadow, gorgeous gold eyeshadow, freshwater eyeshadow, shroom eyeshadow

That definitely can get you the basics and more, depending on if you just want MAC or other lines. It's still good to use other brands too.

Okay well this is just my opinion:
6 neutral eyeshadows: $81
6 bright eyeshadows: $81
2 fluidlines= $29
1 mascara: $11
1 brow set: $13

1 foundation: $30
1 powder: $20
1 concealer: $14
2 blushes: $35

4 lipglasses: $56
4 lipsticks: $56
2 lipliners: $28

brush set: $217

And that's $671.

agree, focus on brushes, because good quality brushes are the key to makeup application, and can last for a long time, with proper care. the pret-a-porte brush collection is a good idea, if you can get it. also pick up mac's brush cleaner, as i feel it's the best to prolong the life of your brushes.

here's what i would consider "basics":

brushes: the 187 would cover both liquid foundation application, as well as taking care of many powder and cream face products. because its more versatile, that's why i choose the 187 over the 190 foundation brush. if you want a seperate foundation brush, the 168 angled brush is great for application and contouring. the 150 powder is good, but not essential. sugar cosmetics makes a great powder/buffer brush, it's pink, and it's only $16. for eyes, the 239 for packing on color, the 217 for blending, the 266 for liner and brows. the stila #4 is the best all-around for lining and detail. the 316 covered lip brush is nice, but not essential. the pret-a-porter is worth it, because they're full-size brushes. don't waste your time with the brush sets, they are nowhere near the quality. instead, focus on building a full-size brush kit, little by little. you really can't beat the quality of the full-size mac brushes.

face: a good foundation is key, i like studio fix fluid myself. a couple blush shades, say a shimmery tone that is still close to your natural cheek color, and then a slightly darker matte shade, for contouring. a good loose or pressed powder to set makeup, and blot shine, i like loose blot powder. also, i'd recommend a good concealer. if you want, you can branch out and get a good cheek highlight, such as a mineralize skinfinish (limited product only released a few times a year) when they come out the day after x-mas. i would also recommend a primer, such as prep and prime skin.

eyes: a good base, to begin with, such as urban decay primer potion. as far as eyeshadows go, i'd recommend getting a 15-pan, or a few 4-pans, and then asking a makeup artist to choose some colors for your skin tone and features. i would say, a good neutral highlight (such as phloof or shroom), a good color for filling in brows, and a good black, for smoky (carbon). beyond that, it's all about person preferance, and what colors you wear the most. if you can get the shadows in pan form, you'll save some money. blacktrack fluidline is my staple liner. beyond that, if you wear colored liner, get a couple of colors of fluidline, or kohl pencil. if you want some colored bases for your shadow, a few paints or shadesticks. i don't like mac mascara. i'd recommend looking for mascara elsewhere, to be honest. diorshow is good, as is benefit bad gal lash.

lips: again, this is mostly preference. a good primer, again, is a great idea. prep and prime lip works well. a good neutral lip liner close to your natural lip shade i use mac lip pencil in whirl. if you tend to wear a lot of a certain color on your lips, get a lip liner close to that color. a few lipsticks is a good idea, a few lipglosses. mac has a LOT of lip options, so go with what you like. i personally prefer the pro longwears, and the lustreglasses.

skincare: also very, very important. mac microfine refinisher is great, it's a mild dermabrasion scrub, to be used a couple times a week, that really helps slough off dead and dry skin, and smooth out blemishes. also, a good moisturizer. you'd be amazed how good skin can help the appearance and application of makeup. fix+ is another must, it helps keep your makeup looking fresh throughout the day. the spray bottle lasts a long time, and also smells good, lol.

basically, my recommendation is to just go to mac, take your time, play with colors, and don't be hesitant to ask questions. "basics" differ from person to person, because we all have such different features and different tastes. $700 should be MORE than enough to build a fantastic collection, so find what you like, and make a list. also, browse the FOTD section, see what looks you like, and what colors were used, which might give you and idea of what items you might want to take a look at. oh, and i believe mac has a $500 maximum purchase limit, just a warning..

I second everything that was posted. I would also add that you might want to get some brush cleaner and some cleanse off oil. Especially if you want to use fluidlines. Also some lip conditioner is nice. Get some tinted for a quick natural look or use it underneath lip color especially the lipglass. I hope this helps!!

FYI, Mima posted above that you can depot the shadows and blushes and bring them back for more make-up, but MAC will no longer accept the empty pots without the pans intact. So you're better off to just buy the Pro pans now.

What a lucky girl, $700 is more than enough to get your collection started. I would invest in the following basic items:

Brushes - they are key to getting successful m/u application:
FOR EYES:
242 - my fav all over shadow brush - it's so great at patting on colors to get more of an intense effect
217 - the best blending brush in my opinion, will give you perfectly blended colors and also picks up more color than the 224
266 - angled liner brush - great with fluidlines or for dabbing on shadow to your lower lashline - also good for filling in brows
FOR LIPS:
I don't use the lip brush but I believe MAC carries a few (incl. one for liplining) - so if you do like to use lip brushes, invest in one
FACE:
187 and 188 - Definitely the best of the best - perfect for buffing liquid foundation, for powder, bronzer, MSF, blushes (powder and creme)
182 - BEST buffer/kabuki brush I've ever tried (better than BE brushes for sure) - luxuriously soft - for buffing mineral makeup/bronzers/powders, etc

BRUSH CLEANER:
Make sure you grab one bottle of this stuff, if you clean your brushes properly, they will last for a long, long time!

For the eyes:
EYESHADOWS:
Get at least 1-2 highlighter shades, a few neutral eyeshadows (browns, nudes, beiges, etc), a few fun brighter colors, and a good combo of 2-3 shadows for your fav smoky eye (i.e for a great grey smoky - silver ring, knight divine and black tied shadows)

EYE BASE:
A good eye base is key if you want your eyemakeup to stay on all day with minimal creasing.
I highly recommend MAC PAINTS as an eye base.

MASCARA:
Personally, I dislike all the MAC mascaras - they don't do anything for my lashes
I highly recommend DIORSHOW mascara - the best mascara I've ever tried and it does wonders for my asian lashes.

FLUIDLINE:
One of the best eyeliners out there.
If you were to get only one, definitely get the black one:
Blacktrack Fluidline

EYEBROWS:
If you need to fill in your eyebrows, you can purchase one of MAC's eyebrow kits, but I find it unneccessary sometimes, I know some people like to use an eyeshadow instead.
I simply use an eyeliner and sweep the tip of the liner on a brow brush, and then proceed to fill in my brows (which don't really need much filling to begin with)

EYELASH CURLER:
I don't like mac curlers personally - I love the Shu Uemera one

Lips:
LIPGLOSSES:
Get a clear gloss, a neutral/nude one, a coral/peach, a soft and a brighter pink and a red (if you like reds!)

LIPSTICKS:
I think any women consider having: Neutral/nude (i.e. your lips but better), soft pink, coral/peach, brighter/fun pink, and a versatile red

LIPLINERS:
I don't have a lipliner to match every lipstick so I just have a few really versatile ones in different color families:
-neutral beige (for nude lipsticks)
-pinky-beige neutral that's very close to my natural lipcolor (just 1 shade darker) - for all my soft to bright pink lipsticks
-true medium red - for all my bright to medium red lipsticks
-auburn/burgundy - for all my deep/rich red lipsticks

FACE MAKEUP:
You've already got foundation, so if you don't already have concealer, now's the time to grab one =)
Also try blot powder or powder if you tend to get oily through the day

FACE PRIMER:
I don't use MAC primer, but you can try their Prep+Prime line

BLUSHES:
You can probably figure out what finish you like, but sheertone (with shimmer or not) will give you the most natural and fool-proof application, if that's what your looking for.
But get: Neutral/nude blush (for soft/natural makeup or smoky makeup), a coral/peach, a more vibrant pinky blush, one contour (darker) blush

Finally - invest in a good MAKEUP REMOVER - removing makeup properly is key to maintaining good skin

Have a great makeup shopping spree!!

Considering I returned my empty pots (panless) last week, that doesn't seem correct to me..

It seems, from reading posts in other threads, that some stores have enforced this new policy about the depotted pans for B2M
