Help on how to achieve an afro

I'm going to a 60s, 70s & 80s themed birthday party next month and I am planning to go for a 70s look.

I'm wondering if styling my hair into an afro if possible (and I mean like Beyonce's Goldmember afro). I'm Indian so I do have fairly thick and frizzy hair (unless I straighten it). I know everyones hair is different and this might not be possible for some but just wanting to know how it's done how easy it is to maintain for one night.

I doubt I'd be able to do it myself so was thinking of going to a hairdresser that specialises in braids if I can find one here in Perth (Aus) but otherwise if it is easy to do I might be able to manage. My hair length is a few inches above my butt so it is pretty long.

Otherwise I may have to look into buying a wig I can tuck all of my hair under!

Any help/tips would be muchly appreciated

this is what I do... its more of a pony tail 'fro, but its cute

buy a tiny curling iron, smallest barrel possible. get a wide head band. pony tail holder, hair spray and a flat iron. Shine serum. back comb.

first, flat iron the fronts of your hair, part off to the side, deeply and gather into a pony tail.

use your curling iron and curl every last peice of the pony tail, teeny tiny little strands. Takes forever. when its all curled.. time to back comb into a pouf. Again, takes forever to get the shape you want, and you need to start in the back and work your way to the sides then the front. spray as you go. You will eventually cover all of your pony tail holder. Add a wide headband just outside of your bangs...

Now, if you wanted all over pouf, I would do the same thing, only spray a root lifter at the base of your roots and proceed from there.

Kendra from The Girls Next Door did this. Her hair stylist curled her hair tightly and then teased it out.

Put your hair in tiny tight braids the night before. the best elastics are the ones that people put on their braces..... if you know anyone with braces, then ask to borrow, or go to an orthodontist and buy a bag of them. they are small and work well for braids.

braid your hair when it's wet. get someone to help you if you need, especially in the back.

sleep on them. the next day keep them in as long as you can. take the braids out, and then brush them with a natural brush. your hair will puff up BIG TIME..... tease it and back comb it at the crown and top of your head. spray the hell out of it with Bed Head Hard Head hair spray and put a headband on for 70's look.

should work. =]

I would suggest curling your hair in small, tight curls. Putting curlers in would probably be best for achieving an afro style. Use just enough hair spray to hold the curl, but don't make them hard, because you have to comb them out and that's not going to turn out cute if your hair is crispy and full of flakes lol

In my opinion, the quickest, easiest, and SAFEST thing to do would be to just buy a wig. Curling your hair with a teeny curling iron or wet setting it on small rods would work, BUT the amount of time it would take to do it, would be ridiculous, and the amount of hairspray to hold it, would leave your hair in a sticky, buildup laden mess. It's really not something to do on hair not already textured that way.
